The idea of smart home has been around for quite a few years now, however, still majority of households and commercial users rely on the conventional lighting setups. The slow rate of adoption is primarily due to the high initial cost associated with the smart accessories, especially the Philips Hue lineup. About a month ago, I decided to give it a try and this review will talk about various aspects of using Philips Hue.

Starting with some numbers, this review is based on the 3rd generation of Philips Hue's starter bundle. It consists of three 800 Lumens, 10W multi-colour bulbs with standard A19 fittings. Apart from the 3 bulbs, the bundle includes a Philips Bridge (Hub), which is connected to the Wifi router with an ethernet cable for a stable connection. This bridge acts as the brain of the Hue network, as all the user inputs are communicated through it. The bridge is also capable of connecting and controlling up to 50 Philips Hue devices simultaneously.

This starter bundle will set you back around $200, which is definitely not cheap for 3 LED bulbs.

User experience
It takes about 10 minutes to get everything up and running. Once everything is setup, the first thing you need is your smart phone. There is a dedicated app for Philips Hue in the Appstore that can be used to interact and try different colour combinations. There are even some presets in the app that can quickly change the lighting of an entire lounge. However, the app sometimes does not communicate properly with the bridge and there is a significant lag in changing the light settings. Apart from that, it works as expected. Now, let's talk about a few nice highlights about Philips Hue.
  • It allows to personalize an entire room by providing numerous colours to choose from.
  • Users can download Hue compatible third party applications and enhance the usability of their smart lights.
  • The compatibility with Apple HomeKit makes it extremely easy to communicate via Apple's eco-system.
  • The Philips Hue family is continuously expanding to enhance the user experience.
  • The brightness and colour accuracy is definitely top notch.
Moving on towards the cons of Philips Hue.
  • The official app needs to be updated to enhance the usability, the remote on-off feature is glitchy and should be fixed.
  • If there is a power outage, the entire system resets and when power's restored, the bulbs light up in a default warm-white colour.
  • The cost is certainly quite high as compared with a normal LED bulb of the same capacity.
Verdict

Philips Hue is definitely a step in the right direction. However, it comes at a steep price and some flaws in the usability which makes it a hard sell, especially for the masses. Having said that, it's certainly a stepping stone towards smart homes and a user focused equipment. However, Philips need to work on making it cheaper so everyone can familiarize themselves with the future.

Congrats. 👍
I was in same boat a month ago and exploring various options. You are right about price. It was the biggest factor in not going for Philips. I just couldnt convince myself that 3 10W bulbs should cost $300 (thats the price quoted to me). So, I decided to go for Xiamoi. 3 bulbs and 1 bedside lamp cost me around $100 and I am happy with the decision. Philips need to bring the price down.

Philips HUE is expensive , it is the first brand to come out with a product like this and is still the leader and innovator in home ambiance lighting and is constantly being updated to stay ahead of the game , Philips HUE products is not targeted towards the masses as of yet , it is quite a niche product , even in USA and Europe (it is not a fast seller).

Prices will come down eventually as with any other technology .

It is a great product with a lot of features ...... congrats on your purchase !

Yes the price is definitely steep and now more players are also tapping this industry. I am sure that gradually the prices will drop in order to cater to a larger market.

Good review. I was in the same boat 2 years ago and opted for LIFX.

LIFX is brighter and the selling point was that LIFX does not require any additional hub and individual lights can be directly operated or paired in a group by using the mobile app.

A hub may not be an issue for some but I have Samsung SmartThings and the last thing I wanted was to add another device to control another device and pair with another device to be contr...you get the idea :)

Philips is a market leader in smart lighting and I would have opted for Philips HUE at that time if there was no additional hub.

After using LIFX for a long time, I won't hesitate to add another LIFX bulb to my home.

Thanks for liking the review :). I do understand your point regarding the necessity of having a hub. However, it is their way of ensuring customer retention, as the hub can control up to 50 Hue devices at once.

@shael

They look very nice!

Out of curiosity - is that a bed that you are showcasing the lights against? I am in process of renovating my house and furniture, I came across the following bed when browsing online and it quickly hit me that I saw something similar in your shots lol... is this the same bed?!

I am attaching a collage with different colours of Hue. I hope it would give you a better idea about the aesthetics of the bed.

Cheers!

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
