PC Buying Guide

This guide will guide you in buying a new PC or upgrading your existing. Following are some steps to follow

1. Plan Your Budget

Now days new technologies are emerging in couple of months. My cousin bought a new PC (Core2) a month ago and he was surprised hearing that new Intel motherboards are about to launch. Planning your budget is relatively easy. First of all check your computer usage. If you are a gamer then you would require at least 50000 Rs to start. If you just browse internet and listen music on your PC then 20000 Rs is more than enough. Check the devices or peripherals you’ll install on the new PC, best way is to look online like galaxy.pk etc. don’t go on foreign sites. You’ll get confused and the items might not be available in Pakistan. I use galaxy.pk because it has the closest market prices.

2. Telling your parents

This is the most important part and delicate of PC build. I recommend telling your parents 5000 Rs over your budget, so that they might come close to your price after bargaining. If you are lucky you’ll get instant approval and you’ll have 5000 Rs more to spend

3. Going to store

There are a lot of computer stores in Karachi and most of them are crap, some don’t even know compatibilities. Try to buy PC from a shop which is near from your house even if there is 300-500 price difference in total amount. This would save your energy if your component fails. Also remember to check more than two stores for price difference

4. Selecting Components

First of all select components like optical drives, USB memory, Ram, casing, monitors every thing except motherboard and processor. Don’t select floppy drives or Zip drive you don’t need them any more. Select your processor, keep your usage in mind and don’t buy a processor which is released three to four years ago. Now here comes the hard part, selecting a motherboard can be a headache, first do your compatibility homework by checking out manufacturer’s websites. Sometimes this prevents a major disaster

5. Configuring your System

When its all done update your drivers and bios. Don’t be afraid to update bios. Nowadays bios recover automatically even if there is a power failure etc.

Recommendations:

Plan your Budget by looking at various local online computer stores
Buy a PC which is newer at the time (technology wise)
If don’t do gaming on PC then built-in graphics will be enough for you, instead buy decent speakers or monitor/ LCD
Check if your store installs OS. Galaxy people don’t install Windows etc.
Don’t forget to consult forums before buying
Buy at least 1 GB of RAM
Buy at least 450 Watts Power Supply

That’s All
