I suppose choosing games from recent history has got to do more with the feel and attachment of gaming itself.

I mean at work, browser flash games work like a charm. Everyone's got a pocket full of shiny, flashy, noisy flash games that keep us busy.

Some guys even carry PSPs, iPhones with the new slick games.

BUT when it comes to proper gaming and I mean heart racing, spine tingling, screaming, shouting, dry throat, knee jerking immersion of games that has only been possible in recent years.

The sheer magnitude of sound, visuals, motion and characterization of games is the reason why most of us have chosen games from recent past.

Actually no, The elements you are mentioning for a great game in reality cannot be found in recent years, Why?; because in recent years 90% of top games are part of sequels.

When first call of duty came I had just bought a sound blaster and 5.1 speakers, I am talking about back in 2003 era. It was the only game in which you were able to hear mortars dropping beside you and that experience was never replicated again in any COD game.

Tomb Raider 4 the last revelation. It took about 6 to 8 months of constant exploring to get past those 41 levels. Later Tombraiders were better but could not replicate those excitement.

In 2001, Black and White was released, It was the game which introduced LionHead studios. Now famous for Fable franchise.

No recent game can actually give that kind of fun which we had by playing Age of Empires on small 14" monitors when no geforce cards existed.

All the knowledge I have about games, windows, PC, hardware etc was learned from windows 98,Original Game franchises, Those limited machines where having 460Mhz Pentium was kick ass.

I have been gaming since I was 5, The first ever game which I played was "Tanks", super mario, Jackal, Road fighter, Original Street Fighter games back in 93 94.

You can grab any game by ubisoft now but if you play Prince of Persia Sands of Time, you will see how much hard work it had.

I suggest new gamers to get a classic collection of games if they really want the essence of gaming. If they need to understand why most of recent games have next to 0 reply value.

there are quite a few awesome games that i could make as 'my favorite' game such as diablo II, Mass effect series, age of empires, company of heroes, starcraft, COD series etc...
but the game that i could truly describe as being THE ONE would have to be no other than.....

Im gaming since i was 3-4, and the first game i ever played ... i dont even remember its name, lol. but doom was one of the few. and i STILL think Sonic Adventure 2 is the BEST game EVAH!!
about ur argument, actually, new gamers wont necessarily like the old games.
you see, everyone likes the activities or things they used to do when they were small. Those things are golden, and are inscribed in your memory. Thats why you think of them as 'the best evah' and altho new games seem good to you, you dont think they match the awesomeness of purana games.
No old games have the ability to pump up ur adrenaline like the new games do. No old games have as much detail, as the new ones do. In fact, a person wholl be our age in ... dunno ... 2024 will be remembering red alert 3 as a golden game. wen we think it dusnt compare shit to red alert 2

There is alot of stuff wrong in all that...Lots of stuff.

You're relating your own great memories of gaming with how gaming should be. I can say the same when i was having Halo 3 LAN parties every sunday for almost 6 hours straight on 22 inch LCD split-screened and having 10-12 hairy ass dudes laughing, screaming and cursing at each other while bathing in their own sweat....I can ask everyone to arrange LAN parties at their place and play Halo 3 to experience "the essence of gaming" just because i think it is, no? lol

And about that Call of Duty sound effects you mentioned, that it was the only game where you could hear a mortor drop next to you, and that the experience was never replicated in any other game to date. You're right, we don't have all that today.....Today....you hear multiple bullets cut through the air next to your ear, the sound travel from one point of the room to the other, actual guns sound EXACTLY like they do in real life and a musical score that can make your heart melt with emotion or race with adrenaline......All this complimenting the jaw-dropping graphics, motion-captured animation, incredible story, gameplay and the experience the game takes you through.

Don't get us wrong, we don't take the old days and ways for granted, we've all had good memories....but frankly, with you calling recent games having next to zero replay value...ouch...thats kinda pushing it way too far.
