I don't think I've seen any anime that's managed to have such well written characters but eh to each his own, I guess.
NGE had well written characters, no doubt in that. And hell, I was really hooked with the anime. But seeing your protagonist wimp out so much was just not appealing no matter how realistic or well written he was.
Anyway, I think I should re-watch NGE. I kinda watched it long ago. Maybe I'll like shinji more now. Who knows.

I think you guys underestimate how popular and well liked Shinji actually is as a character. The majority of the people that have watched NGE think of it as a classic and regard Shinji as one of the best child characters written. Shinji breaks the mold of generic hero paths of do the thing, get confident, do the thing again, fuck up doing the thing, make a strong comeback, do the thing, save the day, win the girl.
You guys are in the minority of you didn't like Shinji. He's one of the most endearing characters for a generation of people that had similar dysfunctional social behaviors. Even I connected with the kid when he was struggling to get through the day. 'Cause frankly, life is like that a lot of the times. You can't just decide to "man up" and have things go better. It never works out that way, and people relate to characters that are going through the same.

Can't argue that. There are different types of people, majority of them break down in the difficult parts of life. Not everyone wanna see strong willed, positive minded, cool n awesome MCs winning in all the situations. And i don't think i've seen any anime where the MC breaks down this much but still goes on so i think people are gonna like him ofc. And personally i also like characters who start weak and end up with some sort of development or in other words you can say "reluctant heroes" but didn't see any sort of development with Shinji that's why i was disappointed :s
I know NGE is very well liked and is considered a classic, hence why I watched it in the first place. It definitely didn't live up to the hype for me though. But I liked the anime overall.
As for shinji, I don't hate/dislike him. But I don't quite love/like him either. He's just sorta in the middle for me. I did liked the fact that they made him realistic and tried to go in a different way then your usual child hero, but sometimes realism doesn't equate to likeness. Seeing him go through difficulties, especially psychologically, which you would expect a kid of that age would go through in that situation should have made me care for him but instead, more often then not, he felt annoying.

well m not into ecchi/hentai bcz most of the times the themes are college life , girly girly stupidity and poping up of bra n panties without any reasons make me bore, even I dont like anime like bikni wariors and etc , dont have any issue with nudity but most ecchi anime has stupidity that a girl should watch so why I skip those ecchi anime , thats why I liked prison school bcz its different from casual ecchi anime , its about prison life , as I checked the trailer ,
