Will Injustice: Gods Among Us Be Another Lukewarm, Less Violent Fighter Like MK v. DC?'

News that the Mortal Kombat team were working on a fighter title strictly for the DC Comics' characters called Injustice: Gods Among Us was welcome news, but a slightly negative thought jumped in my mind: what if it turns out to be another Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe?

The rare fighting mash-up from Midway was fun (even though I spent most of it playing with gleeful evil as The Joker) and it's still in my library, but it felt held back, not just as a Mortal Kombat game but as a vehicle for some of the DC world's seemlier characters. The blood was scaled way back. The violence was toned down and reserved. Even the iconic comic book and MK heroes were restrained, especially for the game's beloved "fatalities" (or in the DC heroes' case, the wimpy sounding "heroic brutalities"), all in the name of a scoring a "Teen" rating.

Apparently, I'm not the first person to have that concern. Kotaku's Stephen Totilo spoke to NetherRealm Studio's Ed Boon and confirmed that the violence won't be as brutal as the usual MK game but it will still attempt to push the boundary of acceptable brutality for as close as a "Teen" rating will allow.

"DC understandably will never let us cut Batman's head off. They're never going to let us stab Wonder Woman in the face… In this format they're never going to do something like that."

Instead, you'll get the kind of fighting you expect from any of these iconic comic book characters.

"Violence is replaced with crazy, over-the-top action. We're making big, action-movie, over-the-top, kind of Transformers, Dark Knight, Spider-Man-type [action]. All the events you see in those kinds of movies is what we're trying to capture in this thing."

Check out more screenshots of the "over-the-top action" in action below.

Injustice: Gods Among Us: What Do Fighting Fans Think?

Wondering what Injustice: Gods Among Us plays like as a fighter? Answers are starting to emerge.

The consensus, so far, seems to be that Injustice will be something unique. This is not a reskinned Mortal Kombat, as some feared. Although it uses the same engine, there are some key design differences that, even at an early stage, make it distinct as a fighting game.

For example, instead of using a block button, you hold back to block, Street Fighter style, which changes strategy considerably. Another addition, new to the engine, are air dashes, which characters who can fly can make use of, while those who can't get other moves to increase their mobility, making the overall game faster.

Interestingly, the game that comes up the most in Shoryuken's detailed overview isn't Mortal Kombat, but BlazBlue. Apparently it's got much of the feel of anime fighters, which is surprising, given the engine and the man behind the curtain.

The overall results sound like NetherRealm is delivering something very interesting, and different from the last DC fighting game we saw. We're looking forward to seeing how the game changes, and how the fighting game community reacts, as it gets closer to release.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Gets Its First Epic Public Demo

The new fighter from NetherRealm Studios gave everyone at the recent EVO tournament a look at their new DC Comics title and it will have you wishing that tomorrow was the first day of 2013.

NetherRealm's Ed Boon took the attendees through a couple of rounds of Injustice: Gods Among Us featuring Superman vs. The Flash and Batman vs. Solomon Grundy and some of the special features they can expect when the title hits the shelves sometime next year.

My earlier concerns about this being a repeat of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe were immediately put to rest. It's not as bloody as your average Mortal Kombat title, which shouldn't be a surprise since we're dealing with iconic comic book characters. However, the action is so over the top and creative for each character that it fits perfectly in the things that NetherRealm does best.

NetherRealm has literally gone outside of the box to create special moves and attacks in the gameplay that use every inch of the screen to creative possibilities for tactics. The special moves particularly look more satisfying to pull off than the most complicated fatality.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Announces Cyborg and Nightwing Will Join Its Fighter Roster

The opening night of Comic-Con featured a massive reveal for fans of fighting games and DC Comics.

The Verge reported that NetherRealm Studios' newest fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us revealed at Comic-Con that their iconic roster of DC Comics' heroes and villains will include Cyborg and Nightwing.

They also got to take both characters on a test fight. Nightwing is a "weapons-based" fighter who uses a staff to beat his enemies to a pulp. The most interesting part is that he can split the staff into two fighting sticks that change his fighting style from his speed and jumps to his special moves.

Cyborg, of course, focuses more on power than speed and can launch missiles and fire lasers at his enemies. One of his special moves can regenerate his health forcing his opponent to attack to reduce his health regeneration and his extra special move consists of punching his opponent in the face with a giant fist and blasting them with a large, screen-filling energy blast.

That's what all fighting games should have for a special move: A massive punch to the face from a giant fist and a giant, face melting laser to said punched face.

[UPDATE: 8:51 p.m. Pacific]The NeoGAF forum posted a couple of slightly fuzzy screenshots of the new characters from a demo on the Comic-Con floor.

[UPDATE: 8:57 p.m. Pacific]An interesting video popped up on YouTube that seems to tease the game's story about why the game's world lies in ruin and how the heroes have been blamed for its demise.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Screenshots Show Cyborg and Nightwing in Action

NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. released some new screenshots of their two newest characters for Injustice: Gods Among Us a day after premiering them at Comic Con.
The screenshots feature a small taste of the weapons and moves they will use in the final product.

As we previously mentioned, Nightwing seems to be more of a nimble and quick character but also has a higher focus on gadgets to counteract his strength. It's a clever way of addressing the "ying and yang" of fighting games to level out the powers and abilities of characters without sacrificing the character's comic book source material

Cyborg, of course, is just one giant gadget but his emphasis is on strength and size. It will be interesting to see the other gadgets he can use in battle, which is sure to be a big part of his giant special move.

Could Injustice: Gods Among Us Be NetherRealm's First Step Away from Fighting Games?

Ed Boon's NetherRealm Studios has found some strong footing with their brilliant fighting games from the most recent revamp of Mortal Kombat to the upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us. The latter, however, could open a new world for NetherRealm with a title that doesn't involve beating your opponent in the face until they fall.

Boon spoke to Sony's PlayStation Blog during the recent EVO Championship Series where he gave the first public demo of Injustice to the fight hungry fans.

Naturally, he had a lot to say about the new DC Comics-inspired fighting title from possible details about the story behind the main campaign to the interactive backgrounds that have become an integral part of the gameplay and each character's fighting styles.

Towards the end of the interview, however, he had an interesting answer to a question about the future of his studio and what they might be working on or what they would like to work on once Injustice is complete.

"We feel like Injustice is kind of our first step towards [a non-fighting game]. If it does well, we would like to see our next step be a non-fighting game, maybe something unique in its own right. This is our first step in that direction."

That's not a definitive confirmation of a new title, but it's an interesting indication that a great studio could bring us a great new game that no one thought they could tackle or a great new type of game that we've never seen. That's assuming that Injustice is great, but we're not worried about that based on what we've seen so far.
