Daredevil and Jessica Jones established the Hell’s Kitchen/Netflix corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2015, and Luke Cage (whose namesake was a supporting player in Jessica Jones season 1) will explore the MCU version of Harlem in 2016. That means there’s only one member of The Defenders left to introduce (before that team assembles in a Netflix mini-series): Daniel Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist.
Marvel COO Joe Quesada recently confirmed that Iron Fist is still moving forward, after the lack of official (and/or all-but-official) updates on the project of late helped to fuel the rumors that the fourth of Marvel’s Defenders Netflix TV show was in danger of being cancelled. A show-runner has now been officially selected for the series – and there’s also a synopsis that sheds more light on the initial setup for the Netflix show, too.

HH and CB broke the story earlier today (at the time of writing this) that Scott Buck will serve as the show-runner on Iron Fist, and Marvel has now confirmed the news via an official press release. Here is the statement from Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb, regarding the news:
“Scott came in with a take on Iron Fist that quite simply knocked us off our feet. We always look for the most creative minds in the field to help us bring our heroes to life, and with Scott we’ve found someone that can deliver yet another great series in the ongoing story of The Defenders.”
Buck, for those unfamiliar, has previously worked on such TV series as Nikki, as well as the HBO series Six Feet Under and Rome, though he most recently served as show-runner for Dexter during its final four seasons. This means that Buck is the second major Dexter alum who has gone on to work behind the scenes on Marvel’s collection of Netflix series, after Jessica Jones creator/show-runner Melissa Rosenberg. Buck joins a show-runner team that, in addition to Rosenberg, includes Cheo Hodari Coker (Southland, Ray Donovan) – who’s serving as the architect for Luke Cage season 1 – as well as Marco Ramirez (Sons of Anarchy), who’s taken over show-running duties for Daredevil season 2 from Steven DeKnight.

The official Iron Fist synopsis released by Marvel (which you can read below) accounts for the character being absent from previous Marvel/Netflix series, at the same time that it teases what he will bring to the table for The Defenders:
Returning to New York City after being missing for years, Daniel Rand fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.
Whereas Daredevil is more of a crime series first, martial arts drama second, it sounds as though Iron Fist will aim to be a martial arts drama first, crime series second – albeit, with overt mystical elements that Daredevil hasn’t included so far. The Iron Fist comics have always been firmly rooted in mysticism, so this doesn’t come as a surprise; together, Iron Fist and Doctor Strange (currently filming for a 2016 release) will together introduce mystical elements into both sides of the MCU (film and TV), around the same time. It also sounds as though Iron Fist’s origins are going to be explored by way of flashbacks, as was the case with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and (probably) Luke Cage before him.
Moreover, Iron Fist should end up building on the foundation of Daredevil, since that series has already established that there are mysterious organizations from the far East meddling in the affairs of Hell’s Kitchen’s criminal underbelly. It also seems safe to assume that, like the previous Marvel/Netflix series, Iron Fist will take place in chronological order of the Netflix shows’ release dates (e.g. some time after the events of Luke Cage season 1). There’s also a decent chance that Iron Fist season 1 shall conclude with Rand and Cage teaming up to form Heroes for Hire – before all of the The Defenders assemble on the small screen. All shall be revealed in time, of course.

Daredevil
season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 and Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix in 2016. Release dates for Iron Fist and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.

[h=1]Marvel’s Iron Fist TV Series: New & Returning Character Details[/h]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3r9u5bqLgQ&feature=player_embedded

Putting a quick end to rumors coming out of New York Comic-Con weeks ago that the Netflix Iron Fist series could be canceled in favor of a TV movie, Marvel officially announced that Scott Buck (Dexter, Rome) would serve as showrunner. For months, insider reports claimed that Marvel was having challenges managing the supernatural and mystical elements of the series and that there could potentially be conflict with Marvel Studios and their film plans.
Whatever problems there may have been, they’ve been solved because Iron Fist is on the way as a full season (as originally planned) and it already has an official plot synopsis. Now we can add to that some more details on who’s going to be casting the show and when it’s going to be shooting.

That Hashtag Show, who landed a few MCU scoops earlier in the year, report on a few series regulars that are currently being cast. The first is Dylan Kendall, late 20s, handsome and a bit of a loner. This name could actually just be a placeholder for the show’s lead: Danny Rand. Note that there’s no ethnicity specified for this character which indicates that Marvel TV could be casting a wide net for this character and that he could be – as we’ve suggested on Screen Rant – played by an Asian actor. The other character is Harry Marshall, who’s twice the age, Caucasian, smart, arrogant and physical.

What’s even more interesting is their info that Iron Fist will also see Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss) returning from her key supporting role in Jessica Jones. For Marvel Comics readers, this is a no-brainer inclusion to the cast given that Hogarth (who’s a male character named Jeryn in the books) is actually an Iron Fist character in the source materials who works for Danny Rand’s father.
We can add to this news that veteran, award-winning casting directors Laray Mayfield and Julie Schubert are re-teaming with Marvel TV and Netflix (Schubert is credited for the entire season 1 of Daredevil, Mayfield just for one episode) for Iron Fist. They previously worked on casting for House of Cards for Netflix and are both Emmy award winners.
Iron Fist will shooting in New York next year, between the spring and early fall with a probable air date of early 2017, just a few months after Doctor Strange (Marvel’s first foray into magical side of the lore) opens in theaters.

Daredevil
Season 1 and Jessica Jones Season 1 are currently available on Netflix. Luke Cage Season 1 and Daredevil Season 2 (a.k.a. Daredevil V Punisher) arrive in 2016. Iron Fist and The Defenders will arrive sometime thereafter.

[h=1]Iron Fist Series Recruits Jessica Jones Writer Scott Reynolds[/h]

Iron Fist is the last Marvel superhero who (at the time of writing this) has been officially confirmed to receive their own Netflix series, leading up to a cross-over mini series in The Defenders that will unite Iron Fist (real name: Daniel Rand) with fellow New York-based crime-fighters: Daredevil/Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), and Luke Cage (Mike Colter). The Iron Fist series will see Daniel “Danny” Rand resurface in New York City after years of being missing, using his new martial arts skills and mystical abilities to battle the city’s criminal underbelly.
Dexter alum Scott Buck is serving as show-runner on Iron Fist and the general expectation is that the series will explore Rand’s experiences traveling the world and gaining the power of the Iron Fist by way of flashbacks, like how Daredevil and Jessica Jones season 1 fleshed out their namesake’s respective backstories – and how Luke Cage season 1 (which takes place a few months after Jessica Jones season 1) is expected to, when it arrives later this year. Now, it seems we know one writer who will assist Buck in bringing Rand’s comic book origin story to life on the small screen.
Jessica Jones writer/producer Scott Reynolds has reveal on his Twitter account (h/t to HH) that he is now serving as a writer on Iron Fist too (see the screengrab below). Reynolds was a writer/producer on Dexter when Buck had taken over showrunning duties on the Showtime TV series, so it makes sense that he would be among the first talents recruited to work on Iron Fist too – given that Reynolds boasts a combination of experience working on television alongside Buck and has a track record with Marvel TV to boot. Reynolds also served as a writer on Skins in the early 2000s and received credit for being a “consulting producer” on a season of The Following.

Buck and Reynolds both have a proven knack for crafting TV shows that walk on the dark side, in terms of their content and thematic substance alike. That makes the pair a logical fit for Iron Fist too, seeing as the show is expected to take its cues from previous Marvel/Netflix programs and embrace an overall more mature tone, compared to the comparatively lighter ABC Marvel TV shows (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter) and Marvel Studios live-action films alike. The Netflix corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe shouldn’t be lightening up anytime soon either, what with characters like The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) joining the party in 2016 with Daredevil season 2 – and possibly in his own Punisher spinoff series, down the line.
The next big step for the Iron Fist series should be to cast an actor as Daniel Rand, now that it has a showrunner and least part of its central writing staff in place. There has been some debate among fans as to whether or not Daniel Rand ought to be played by an Asian-American actor, given the character’s Kung Fu mastery – with some in support of the idea, while others have expressed concerns that such a move would actually do more to promote stereotypes rather than subvert them. Interestingly enough, it would appear that the same discussion (or one similar to it) is also taking place behind closed doors at Marvel TV…

Daredevil
season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix on March 18th, 2016, followed by Luke Cage season 1 later in 2016. Release dates for Iron Fist and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced. Screen Rant will keep you updated on the Punisher spinoff as development continues.

[h=1]Luke Cage Actor Says Iron Fist Has Already Been Cast[/h]

Marvel’s Defenders characters have proven very popular in their current home on Netflix. Originally planned as four standalone series plus a final mini-series team-up, the streaming service has already promised fans second seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones. The third Defender, Luke Cage, debuted in Jessica Jones and has his own series premiere later this year.
With the schedule so crowded already, rumors surfaced that the fourth character, Iron Fist, might not earn his own standalone story. Marvel COO Joe Quesada insisted late last year, however, that the show would be going forward. Soon afterwards, Scott Buck (Dexter) was announced as showrunner.

Iron Fist will center on character Daniel Rand, who returns to New York City after being missing for several years. He’ll fight against the criminal underworld using his kung-fu skills and, as the official synopsis states, “his ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.” There was some debate about whether Marvel TV should/would select an Asian actor for the martial-arts-heavy role, and it seems we’ll soon have an answer about their final decision.
Collider reports that Luke Cage star Mike Colter, while speaking at the Netflix portion of the TCA Press Tour, jokingly shared some news when discussing his character’s future interactions with Iron Fist.
“The actor has been cast, but he’s in a basement somewhere. When the time is right, they’ll let him up and tell him where he is. I am [excited]. I’ll get a nice little break, after doing Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Whether I’m in [his show], I don’t know, but there’s The Defenders.”

While Colter isn’t sure about his involvement in Iron Fist, there will be at least one familiar face to fans of the Marvel/Netflix franchise. Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss), the lawyer who worked with Jessica Jones on several cases and eventually had a life-altering Kilgrave experience of her own, will also appear in the Netflix series. The original comic book character (a man named Jeryn) was a lawyer and businessman who worked with Danny Rand’s father, then later acted as manager for Luke Cage and Iron Fist’s business, Heroes for Hire.
Connecting the shows in the Defenders universe is getting trickier as it expands, and incorporating the more mystical elements of the Iron Fist story presents an additional challenge — especially considering the effects-lite productions we’ve seen so far from Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb did share that showrunner Buck’s concept for the show “knocked us off our feet,” and Jessica Jones writer/producer Scott Reynolds (also a Dexter alum) will be helping Buck bring the story to screen.
While the previous Marvel/Netflix series haven’t been flawless, the majority of viewers have enjoyed the noir flavor and down-to-earth heroics. Likable, believable lead actors have helped draw fans into the stories, so — as important as the writing and production values may be — the casting of Iron Fist will have a lot to do with how well the show is received. Stay tuned to Screen Rant for further updates on Iron Fist casting news.

Rumor Patrol: Finn Jones Is Playing Marvel’s Iron Fist

The most interesting – and easily the most challenging to adapt – out of the first set of superheroes Marvel TV was looking to adapt into live-action for their set of Netflix shows is none other than Iron Fist. The character’s (real name: Danny Rand) supernatural origins and less grounded power set helped add credence to odd rumors that Marvel was at one time considering having Iron Fist get a TV movie instead of a full season order like his Defenders counterparts (Daredvil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage).
Instead, The Punisher was rumored to replace Iron Fist since he’s being introduced in Daredevil season 2. He’s rumored to get his own show later after Jon Bernthal won over Marvel with his take on Frank Castle, and is already receiving positive acclaim from early reviews. Marvel however, put an end to any doubts of Iron Fist’s status by hiring Scott Buck (Dexter) as a showrunner and releasing an official synopsis in December, followed by bringing inJessica Jones writer/producer Scott Reynolds in January. And according to Mike Colter, who plays Luke Cage on Jessica Jones and in his own self-titled series later this year, Iron Fist has already been cast.
The announcement is expected to come very soon and while Marvel TV’s first two Netflix shows remained almost entirely standalone, with only one character (Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple) appearing in both in a major way, Danny Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist could be setup a little earlier. Whether that’s true or not, Marvel is holding back the identity of who they’ve cast but The Hashtag Show may of find out who’s the next Marvel TV superhero: Finn Jones.

Like Charlie Cox, Finn Jones is another British actor and should be recognizable to TV viewers for his role on HBO’s Game of Thrones, where he plays Loras Tyrell. He’s only 27 years old, and has the blonde hair and look of Rand from Marvel Comics. And best of all, he’s the type of actor Marvel can lock-in long-term on the cheap since he’s a relative unknown still who can they build into a star.
This is just a rumor at this point, but we should find out more soon. In the meantime, let us know – Finn Jones as Iron Fist, yay or nay?

Daredevil season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix on March 18th, 2016, followed by Luke Cage season 1 later in 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jonesseason 2, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced. We’ll keep you updated on the Punisherspinoff as development continues.

[h=1]Marvel’s Iron Fist: Finn Jones Confirmed to Star[/h]

All eyes are on Marvel and Netflix this weekend for the impending premiere of Daredevil: Season 2. But while audiences are eager to catch up with Matt Murdock and his supporting cast once again, many more are also hyped to hear more about the other heroes whose series are still coming from the Marvel/Netflix alliance, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, who will eventually join Daredevil and Jessica Jones in the forthcoming team-up event The Defenders. Recently, it was reported that actor Finn Jones had been cast as Iron Fist, though Marvel had not officially confirmed such at the time.
However, Marvel had put the rumors to rest: Finn Jones is now officially confirmed to play Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist, in the upcoming Netflix series. Moreover, Marvel teased an additional detail about the upcoming Netflix show, through its Twitter account.

While Jones’ casting won’t come as a surprise to many at this point (given how long the story was out there without a denial from Marvel), fans can now rest easy that the role has been filled and the project is proceeding as planned. Good thing, too, as Danny Rand is easily the most bizarre Marvel character to yet be featured as part of the Netflix series, which thus far have focused on heroes more grounded in street-level realism. Explains Iron Fist Executive Producer and Showrunner Scott Buck:

“Danny Rand is a very complicated character. He’s a billionaire New York Buddhist monk martial arts superhero who’s still trying to figure out what exactly that all means. Finn is able to play all these levels in such an honest, revelatory way that as soon as I saw him I knew he was our Danny.”
In his traditional backstory, created in 1974 as part of a concerted effort by Marvel to launch new heroes grounded in the then-exploding popularity of both kung-fu movies at the box-office and Asian martial-arts and meditation techniques among American athletes, Danny Rand is a young boy left for dead in the mountains of Tibet after the betrayal and murder of his parents by their onetime friend Harold Meachum. Found alive and taken in by the residents of the fabled lost city of K’un-L’un, he is trained in ancient martial-arts and Buddhist mysticism, which he uses to avenge his family and battle evil upon returning to New York as the costumed vigilante Iron Fist. That’s a far cry from the other street-level would-be Defenders we’ve met thus far and a difficult character to inhabit under any circumstances – but Marvel TV overseer Jeph Loeb believes Jones has what it takes:
“Finn wonderfully blends confidence with vulnerability, making him the perfect choice as he struggles to find his place in the world. Now that we’ve found our Danny Rand, we’ve completed our principal cast for the upcoming Defenders on Netflix and we are thrilled to continue to show audiences unexplored corners of the Marvel Universe.”

Here is the aforementioned Iron Fist-related Tweet that Marvel posted online:
Some secrets can't be buried. #IronFist https://t.co/pxX5JUIRLf pic.twitter.com/piYGXey2Dx
— Iron Fist (@MarvelIronFist) March 17, 2016
Notably, the Tweet which revealed the casting included an image that would appear to announce the presence of another perennial Iron Fist character in the series: A “while you were out” note marked “urgent” and stating that Joy Meachum is looking for information about Danny Rand. Meachum is one of the more prominent figures in the Iron Fist mythos: A brilliant businesswoman groomed from a young age to take over the Rand-Meachum Corporation, she blames Iron Fist for the murder of her father Harold – unaware that he murdered the Rands and that Iron Fist is actually innocent; the killing having been carried out by an assassin known only as The Ninja. Left unsaid is whom these notes are being left for – could Meachum be asking Jessica Jones or Matt Murdock to find information about Danny?
In the comics, Iron Fist eventually became best known as the ally and best friend of Luke Cage, with the character widely expected to first appear at some point in Cage’s forthcoming series prior to the debut of his own. He was also involved in one of comics’ first and most high-profile interracial romances with Misty Knight, another character already set to appear in the Luke Cage series.

Daredevil
season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix on March 18th, 2016, followed by Luke Cage season 1 on September 30th, 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.

[h=1]Marvel’s Iron Fist Casts Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing[/h]

With Daredevil season 2 now streaming and Luke Cage heading into production, all eyes now fall on Marvel Studios’ next Netflix venture, Iron Fist — the final new series set to debut en route to the planned crossover event The Defenders. Though initially not paid as much attention amid the buildup to more well-known characters like Cage and Jessica Jones, Iron Fist found renewed focus with the casting of Game of Thrones’ Finn Jones as the title character and the prominence of Asian mysticism in Daredevil’s second season narrative indicating that the series might play a more prominent-than-expected role in setting up The Defenders’ storyline.
Now comes word that one of Jones’ fellow Game of Thrones alums will be joining the cast as well, as it has been reported that Jessica Henwick will play Colleen Wing, the series’ female lead.
Debuting alongside Iron Fist himself in the pages of Marvel Premiere in 1974, Wing is a martial artist (specializing in samurai swordsmanship and chi control) of Chinese and Japanese ancestry who becomes an ally of Iron Fist upon his initial return to New York city from K’un-L’un to seek his family’s murderers and become a vigilante superhero. As one of Marvel’s rapidly expanding cast of martial arts-themed heroes of the 70s, she eventually became the best friend of police detective Misty Knight (for a time also Iron Fist’s love-interest), leading the two to found a private detective team nicknamed “The Daughters of The Dragon.”

Henwick first arrived on the acting scene in the 2009 BBC series Spirit Warriors (a role that made her the first woman of East Asian descent to headline a series in the UK), in recent years she has seen her profile raised thanks to small but noteworthy roles in a pair of huge franchises. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognize her as one of the Sand Snakes, Nymeria (the one with the whip), while her character of X-Wing pilot Jessika “Testor” Pava from Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been building a significant fanbase online.
As Wing, Henwick will likely be part of Iron Fist from early on. According to the EW report, the series will open with Danny Rand arriving in New York having already mastered his Iron Fist powers — likely meaning that his origin will be delivered in flashback throughout the series (a’la Daredevil and Jessica Jones before him). In stepping into the role, Henwick becomes the first actress to play the character, one of Marvel’s more prominent second-tier players (Wing has been an ally of everyone from the X-Men to The Avengers at one time or another) in live-action. The early casting also makes it hypothetically possible for her to appear in Luke Cage (where Simone Missick is playing Misty Knight) as well, though no indication has yet been made that this is the case.
Daredevil seasons 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 debuts on September 30th, 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.

[h=1]Iron Fist: Martial Artist Sameer Ali Khan Joins Series in Undisclosed Role?[/h]

While Marvel hasn’t quite dominated television in the same way they have in the box office, they’ve made quite a name for themselves on Netflix. With the well-received launches of Daredevil and Jessica Jones, the street-level Marvel heroes are off to a good start with more on the way. Luke Cage hits the streaming service this fall, and filming of Iron Fist is already well underway, with a Defenders team-up series on the horizon and a Punisher spinoff expected in the future as well.
The production of Iron Fist is shrouded in secrecy, with only a handful of confirmed castings, and almost no details about the story. Finn Jones (Game of Thrones) is playing Danny Rand, the billionaire heir who becomes the martial artist hero, Iron Fist. In the comics, Danny travels from his home in New York to K’un L’un and studies to fight to avenge his parents’ deaths at the hand of a traitorous former business partner. Now, we may have some idea of a new actor joining Jones in the Netflix series.

The Afghan Bollywood actor and stuntman, Sameer Ali Khan (Rock the Kasbah), has seemingly revealed in an Instagram post that he would be joining the cast of Iron Fist in New York City by hashtagging both the show name and the location. Of course, since Marvel has yet to confirm the casting, this Instagram post should be taken with a grain of salt as Khan’s #ironfist hashtag may not necessarily be referring to the Netflix series.

Still, it’s entirely possible that Khan isn’t playing a named character at all, and instead he’s been hired for his expertise in stuntwork. It’s unlikely he’ll be working as the stunt coordinator, since Brett Chan (Marco Polo) is already filling that role. But Khan’s three month commitment and must-shave requirement seem to indicate that his on-screen involvement is significant, making it seem unlikely that he’ll be playing a random goon for Danny Rand to put down.
Danny’s foremost rival Harold Meachum has already been cast, and it’s unclear who else he’s scheduled to tango with during the course of the series. Even Khan’s ethnicity offers few clues, since Marvel has shown no qualms about race-mixing minor or supporting characters in their live action adaptations. Some are guessing Davos The Steel Serpent, who once stole the power of the Iron Fist from Danny Rand. Die-hard Iron Fist fans are encouraged to place their best guesses in the comments section.
Stay tuned to Screen Rant as developments on Iron Fist continue.

[h=1]Marvel’s Iron Fist Logo & Teaser Trailer Released[/h]

Fans of Marvel Comics and their Netflix-only adaptations may already be dreaming of The Defenders – the team-up of small screen heroes now confirmed for 2017 – but before we get there, fans first need to see each of the solo heroes introduced. And while audiences have already met Daredevil, Jessica Jones and a pre-solo-series Luke Cage (who now his own teaser trailer), the last to join the fray is Danny Rand, better known to comic fans as Iron Fist.
As Marvel rolled out marketing materials in a flurry of fan service at San Diego Comic Con, fans were treated to not only their first look at an official Iron Fist logo (or two), but the very first glimpse of the show’s story, including Finn Jones’ take on the martial arts master (who clearly needs to get through some trauma before joining his fellow superheroes).

Those familiar with the character’s origins in the comics will see some familiar images, from the family trauma faced by Danny, to the snowswept mountains and monks that will help unlock his true potential. It’s anyone’s guess how he winds up barefoot in New York City, but one thing is for sure: no psych ward has invented a wall that Danny Rand can’t smash through.

Daredevil
season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. The Defenders and Iron Fist arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, The Punisher and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.

[h=1]Iron Fist: Finn Jones Hints at Lei-Kung the Thunderer Appearance[/h]

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand on Netflix, with individual superhero stories leading up to the team-up series The Defenders debuting next year. While fans are waiting impatiently for the very far-off sequels to Daredevil and Jessica Jones, they can dive into episodes of this fall’s Luke Cage and 2017’s long-awaited martial arts master series, Iron Fist.
Like Doctor Strange in Marvel’s big screen universe, Iron Fist is the most otherworldly hero in Netflix’s otherwise more grounded corner of the MCU. Danny Rand (Finn Jones), orphaned in a tragic accident in China and raised in the alternate-dimension city of K’un Lun, channels his chi to focus superhuman power into his body. While his TV incarnation will be focused more in the very tangible New York City, with Rand fighting earth-bound villains, it looks like we’ll be getting a peek into the training and mysticism that created the Iron Fist.
An early trailer for Iron Fist shows flashes of Rand’s past, including the accident that claimed the lives of his parents. Like Daredevil interweaving stories of Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) present with his childhood training with mentor Stick (Scott Glenn), actor Jones has hinted on his Instagram that we might get something similar with Rand’s training with K’un Lun warrior Lei-Kung.

A photo posted by Finnstagram (@finnjones) on Sep 4, 2016 at 8:01am PDT

In the comic books, Lei-Kung spent centuries preparing young fighters aspiring to be the ultimate protector of the city, as Iron Fist. The final, and often deadly, test came against the immortal dragon Shou Loa. The quote above talks extensively about protecting one’s heart, which is directly related to how the comic version of Rand defeated the dragon. In the battle he pressed his chest against the dragon’s, which broke the connection between her body and the life energy of her heart — which was separate from her body.
Jones has spoken about the intensive training regimen he underwent for his role in Iron Fist, a combination of martial arts disciplines, meditation, and Buddhist philosophy. “I’ve always dreamed of a role that bridged spiritual discipline and badass superhero,” the actor said, adding that the contradiction of those two worlds would be fascinating to portray. It seems an ideal way to reveal some of that training and philosophy by showing Rand with his mentor Lei-Kung. While enriching the backstory of the character, it also provides another opportunity for the kind of thrilling, intricate fight sequences that have made Daredevil so popular.

Daredevil
season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. Iron Fist and The Defenders arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, The Punisher and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.

[h=1]Marvel’s Iron Fist Gets an Official Premiere Date & First Look Photo[/h]

Now that Marvel’s Luke Cage season 1 has premiered, there’s only one more street-level New York based Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero whose origins are left to be explored, before they and the other members of The Defenders unite. That would be Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist, the mystically-powered martial arts warrior being played by Game of Thrones alum Finn Jones. And similar to what fellow New York-based ninja/crime series Daredevil has done over the past two years, Iron Fist is going to be premiering brand-new episodes in the first quarter of the (new) year.
Iron Fist, as created and run by Scott Buck (Dexter, Six Feet Under), tells the tale of Danny Rand and how he returns to New York City to reclaim his family’s company, some fifteen years after he was presumed dead in a plane crash. Other key players in the story include Jessica Henwick (another Game of Thrones veteran) as Colleen Wing, a fellow martial artist who becomes an ally to Iron Fist, and David Wenham (Faramir from The Lord of the Rings film trilogy) as Harold Meachum; the business partner to Danny’s late father who, for reasons that you can probably guess, isn’t so happy when Danny Rand returns from the dead.

Marvel has previously announced that Iron Fist season 1 would be hitting Netflix in 2017, but now the show has an official premiere date: March 17th, 2017, as you no doubt noticed from the announcement video above. An official first look image of Danny Rand, sans his Iron Fist costume, in action has also been unveiled, and you can check it out below:

While all of the Marvel/Netflix series exist within and contain references to the larger MCU, Iron Fist traditionally has the most direct connections to Luke Cage, as far as Defenders-related superhero titles go. In the world of Marvel comics, Danny Rand and Luke Cage (played by Mike Colter in the MCU) eventually form their own business called Heroes for Hire; something Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has teased could be explored in Luke Cage (and/or Iron Fist) season 2. Danny and Luke aren’t the only superheroes from New York who form their own crime-fighting business either, as Colleen Wing and Misty Knight (played by Simone Missick on Luke Cage) eventually join forces and found their own privative detective team (known as ‘The Daughters of the Dragon’) in the Marvel comics.
So far, each Marvel/Netflix TV series has successfully distinguished itself from its peers, despite the similarities in tone and style, as well as the immediate connections they have with one another. Daredevil started off as a mobster drama blended with a martial arts superhero story in season 1 before evolving into more of a pure martial arts superhero saga in season 2. Jessica Jones season 1, by comparison, unfolds as neo-Noir flavored psychological thriller and is poised to carry over that approach into season 2. Luke Cage season 1 is the most overtly political of these Defenders lead-up series thus far, playing out as an inner-city crime drama (in the vein of The Wire) that is unapologetically influenced by black culture; be it music, literature, or the 1970s Blaxploitation movement that inspired the original Luke Cage comics in the first place.

Iron Fist is shaping up to be the most overtly mystical of the Marvel/Netflix series release thus far, and it arrives at the perfect moment in the MCU’s evolution to do that. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 has now introduced the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider into the MCU and begun to integrate more similarly supernatural elements into the mix too. Of course, all bets are off when it comes to incorporating magic into what has primarily been a cinematic universe grounded in fictional science to date, when Doctor Strange hits theaters this November.

Daredevil
season 1 & 2, Jessica Jones season 1, and Luke Cage season 1 are now available on Netflix. Iron Fist season 1 arrives on March 17th, 2017. The Defenders arrives in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, The Punisher and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.

[h=1]Iron Fist Star Confirms Filming Has Wrapped[/h]

Marvel and Netflix have seemed to form a near perfect partnership over the last few years. While Marvel continues to bring big blockbuster films to the big screen, they have been expanding their reach on the small screen as well. Their most recent collaboration with Netflix brought Luke Cage to the streaming service and marked the third solo series in the partnership. With two seasons of Daredevil and one for both Jessica Jones and Luke Cage now out, attention now turns to Iron Fist starring Finn Jones as Danny Rand.
Iron Fist is set to have a big presence at New York Comic-Con, with some of the more recent news for the series giving it an official release date for March 2017. Now that a date has been announced, filming was assumed to have already wrapped or being very close to doing so, but Jones has now confirmed his solo series is finished.
Finn Jones took to Instagram to share a video where he reveals Iron Fist has wrapped just hours before their panel at NYCC. The video itself is the final bit of confirmation on production finishing for the series, and will give the tired star just about three weeks to gear up for his part in The Defenders.

With filming now complete for all parties involved, it is possible that Netflix and Marvel could drop the first real trailer for the series at today’s panel, or at the very least give a sneak peak to those in attendance. Netflix does not normally release trailers for their shows this early in advance, but they will not have this chance again before Iron Fist debuts. Given the series takes place in New York and has filmed throughout the state, it only makes sense to give the series a big push now.Even though Marvel and Netflix have a good track record right now, Iron Fist is going to be their toughest sell yet. Unlike Daredevil, Jessica Jones, or Luke Cage, Iron Fist is a hero that requires a certain amount of disbelief from the audience. His origins and powers are far less grounded than the other three members of the Defenders, and there were plenty of reports prior to production about how difficult of a time Marvel was having adapting the source material. Allowing the series to be one of the highlights of NYCC right after Luke Cage was received well would only help the series come next year.

[h=1]Iron Fist Showrunner Says Danny Rand Isn’t a White Savior[/h]

Ever since Marvel agreed to expand the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Netflix, fans were promised that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist would headline this movement before coming together in The Defenders. So far, Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), and Luke Cage (Mike Colter) have debuted and starred in their own series, and soon enough Iron Fist will premiere. Marvel has cast Game of Thrones star Finn Jones in the role of Danny Rand – but the move was not received with overwhelming positivity.
Before and after Jones was cast, the campaign began online to make Danny Rand an Asian-American. The campaign picked up many supporters, as the hope was that Marvel and Netflix would further diversify their mini team of superheroes and give a prominent role to an Asian or Asian-American actor. Once that was not the case, people began to worry that the hero could be portrayed as a white savior.
Iron Fist showrunner Scott Buck recently spoke to Gadget 360 where he was asked about avoiding this archetype in the series. Buck admits to not being very familiar with the character before taking the job, but reaffirms that Danny’s mission is to save himself, and not be the master of martial arts:

When Marvel came to me with this idea, I’d never heard of Iron Fist or Danny Rand. I had never read the comics. What [Marvel TV head] Jeph Loeb pitched me specifically was this character Danny Rand, and that was the story that pulled me in. That intrigued me. So the other aspects I only learned about afterwards, and I can say most definitively Danny Rand is no white savior. He’s trying to save himself, if anything.

Hopefully, Buck’s comments will prove to be true come March. Not much from the series has been shown to this point, but the footage that has been released teases Rand’s journey back to the states after he has gained his powers. Rand’s journey to the mystical realm of K’un-L’un and back again is a complicated one, but part of that story has to deal with him being an outsider because of his heritage. Hopefully, the show will find a way to portray Danny as a capable hero – at the same time, treating the mythology around his powers with respect.
While it appears that most people have accepted the fact that Jones is playing Iron Fist, even Iron Fist cast members have spoken out about the lack of hero roles for ethnic actors. That said, the series will feature Jessica Henwick in a prominent role as Colleen Wing (who will also return for The Defenders). How many other major/supporting roles Iron Fist will have for non-white actors remains to be seen – but knowing that the show aims to not put Danny in the position of supplanting other martial artist experts, should help to ease worries about the show’s direction.
Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, and Luke Cage season 1 are now available on Netflix. Iron Fist will premiere on March 17, 2017. The Defenders and The Punisher will arrive in 2017. Premiere dates for the newest seasons of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage have not yet been announced.
