I need to buy a laptop because Im going abroad for studies. My requirements are

1. Im a programmer so I mostly have 2-3 Projects open at once. Computer must be very fast in loading projects, compiling and building code. I also have use firefox and around 10-20 tabs are open.

My work machine is core i5 2450m 4gb and i find it to be sluggish sometimes.

2. Must not be heavy, and portable. I would prefer an ultrabook over notebook.

2. Some occasional light gaming. ( i want to play gta 5 on it but that might be pushing it). This is a wish, not a need.

Im confused about whether to buy laptop from Pakistan or from over there(usa). What about warranty claiming? Buying it from here is advantage because then I can configure and install all the applications I need. I think you cant download pirates applications from there on University network

My budget is 1 lac and it can be 110,000 at most. Or $1100. I can buy it for even 70,000. It depends on meeting my requirements.

Since you are going abroad, you should purchase it from there for added Warranty claim and maybe you can get some offer/deal.

I am a programmer myself, so i can recommend minimum specs a follows:

i7/i5, i5 if you are not into matlab programing
8Gb ram (your current machine has 4Gb ram which is not sufficient these days for multitasking)
Min 1600x900 resolution or better get Full HD one (1920*1080), this way you will more screen space, for development and preview side by side.
Min 750Gb/1Tb hardrive (And make sure a SSD is present for faster access to files and stuff, or even as a cache drive)

And gpu depends on games you play. For example for mild gaming 650M, 740M by nvidia and 7700 or 8750 by AMD will be sufficient.

And best of luck with the study.

Just make sure that the laptop you go for has 8 Threads and an SSD.

It doesnt matter if its i5 or i7. It should have 4 cores and 4 virtual threads (8 threads in total). Most i7 laptops out there have 2 cores and 2 threads.

However if you go for an ultrabook etc, you will almost certainly get the lower core count (2+2 at most) so light weight WILL come at a compromise.
