So a friend of mine is moving to the States and he would like to know the following

1# Do electrical appliances (phone chargers, electric irons, laptop chargers, and blenders etc purchased from Pakistan work there?

2# Is there any restriction on bringing metallic items (customs)

3# Should he buy a phone here and get a new sim there or buy a phone on contract there? What would be cheaper? What would be the charges?

1# US operates on 110v 60Hz, only appliances with switch mode adapters/power supplies will work there, in short any adapter/power supply/appliance which indicates its operating range as 100-220v 50/60Hz will work there.

appliances wont work there as they run on 110v there...he should buy a phone from here cause he wont be able to get a contract untill he has a credit history there ....credit history will require him to open atleast one account at a bank and use it for a minimum of 6 months after which he can buy a contract phone

Since the mobile phones come from there, get it from there. Taking up to 30 - 45 kg of electronic items is permitted

Buy a phone outright from craiglist/ebay there. After making sure the ESN/IMEI is clean. Don't get a contract right away. And go for a factory unlocked phone (A lot of Verizon phones come unlocked) just in case you switch carriers or go to Pakistan etc.

1. look at the charger/device. 110V works there, so most of your travel devices such as mobiles and laptops will work there.

2. metallic guns, bombs etc arent allowed but metallic laptops etc are allowed.

3. contract will be expensive, especially if you dont have a family plan. you CAN get a contract without credit history, however you will have to deposit $500 (atleast thats the case with AT&T). prepaid companies like cricket will be cheaper, however if your friend can afford postpaid that will be more convenient. A good contract will cost him roughly $40-100 depending on the package.

1. 99% of laptop adapters will work almost anywhere in the world as far voltage is concerned. For phones it depends, most apple stuff works both in PK and US. Rule of thumb is the Label on the device, try to find the Input Voltage ranges, if you see a range between 100-240 your set for PK and US. Thou the "Head" of the plug is another matter. PK headers are round shaped but in the US they are flat. Their are two things you can do get TONS adapters for ever plug you wanna use OR take ONE extension cord from PK with round heads and use ONE adapter for the head of the Extension cord. :hah:

2. Depends on the item really, sharp metal items? Probably not, electronics with metal covers or casing is totally fine. It really depends.

3. Phone is something you need to get from the US. Separate phone the PK and US is how it usually goes.

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
