Kinect's total cost of hardware is $56 for Lulsoft!

SAN FRANCISCO—Microsoft Corp.'s Kinect motion-gaming add on for its Xbox 360 gaming platform carries a bill-of-materials (BOM) of roughly $56 and features chips made by PrimeSense Ltd., Marvell Technology Group Ltd., Texas Instruments Inc. and STMicroelectronics NV, according to a teardown analysis performed by UBM TechInsights...

...Of the roughly $56 BOM, about $17 is attributed to the cost of the PrimeSense reference system, including the cameras, microphones and processor, UBM TechInsights said.

Yes buyers got pwnd (EDIT = as said your now edited post since you got schooled by this post) ... indeed the costs of research, development, testing, production, drivers and other soft coding, packaging and shipping are something you expect the company to pay out of its ass! And how dare they think of making profits! Those fiends Microsoft!

Just to give you a hint on how a BOM compares to the price of a product.

Whereas I couldnt find the BOM of the Android phone you have, the Galaxy Spica which costs 25,000 these days ... the BOM of the Google Nexus One, with a better camera + AMOLED screen + 1GHz snapdragon is roughly 175US$. Thats like 15,000Rs. Its price ? 529US$ ... or 49,000 here.

Ill leave you to ponder how much your Spica had a BOM, I expect half of the Nexus One considering the specs :p ... so we can easily say your Spica would have a BOM of ... 8000Rs at most. How much did you pay for yours ?

Man ... they sure are pwning Android buyers eh (lmao) ... ?

READ THE THREAD TITLE: COST OF HARDWARE. I know quite well about the other costs. Since this is an accessory instead of a full-fledged flagship product (read: Nexus One), of course the premium isn't that high. But $59 :D

Spica's BOM is probably less than half since it's got lousy drivers and plastic body but hey! it's not made for motion sensing. IT'S A MULTITASKING SMARTPHONE. lol man...tsk tsk.

Editing your thread to remove the part where you think that because of the hardware cost buyers are getting ripped off doesnt change the fact that you were being a dumb fanboy before you got schooled in basic costing

SHit man, you must have got ripped off ... a under 8000Rs phone for 25,000+ ... chchch ! In your own *now edited* words ... Buyers Pwnd.

18,500 for USED thing that uses NEW parts worth LESS than 8000rs :/

Tauba evil ... as you said ... "Buyer Pwnd"

Btw, touching on that blog as you requested ... here's an interesting comment

"I am surprised a product retailing at $149 would return a healthy profit with a BOM cost of $56! After 2 levels of supply chain margin there has to be room for assembly cost, test, QA and packaging/freight. Before profit, the remainder has to pay for R&D (incl software development), marketing, wastage/losses, NRE, insurance, I could go on."

Kinda like what I schooled you on.

yaar... obviously you were right about the BOM vs other costs.

The "buyer pwned" comment was just tongue-in-cheek. Dunno why you took 2 words so seriously.

And comparing a full fledged phone to an accessory is unfair to say the least. Imagine the BOM vs selling price of Apple's products :p

Not switching sides lol. Just pointing out the fact that the buyers were not "pwned"... Its how businesses work. As SA said, where the hell will all this $90 profit go to? Research, development, testing, softwares, and marketing. ^___^!!
