Most of you may have noticed in the past couple of days that iptorrents.com is blocked on PTCL for some odd reason. Now today, Playstaion PK and Xbox PK started following me on twitter. These are both relatively new accounts.

It's starting to make me wonder - is PK going legit? Is our country coming to a point where we'll find region based official releases of games, movies etc?

I know back in January there was a meeting in Islamabad for US Pakistan Business Council Trade delegation which included companies such as Coca Cola, Microsoft, Google etc. This meeting was held by our govt to open smoother trade with US companies.

I know this because my boss flew from US to represent our company and overall industry at the meeting. And after the meeting he mentioned YouTube will get unblocked and it did just a week later. The meeting lasted couple of days so a lot was discussed, could legit software be part of it?

So, what are your thoughts? Do you think this is another step forward towards this direction?

if they are doing this then they should provide legit games and software at affordable prices keeping in view the buying power ratio of Pakistani currency (RS/$). But that won't be happening as they are too dumb to think like this. Simply 60$ doesn't hurt the Americans that much as it does here due to the damn devaluation of PKR

inka internet hi kisi ne use ni krna tu :p
where I work , nobody knows that what is piracy , they think that music movies and games are free and an operating system costs 50 rupees ,
and if they gonna make Pakistan piracy free they have to publish everything here , which aint gonna happen soon , they wont invest a market here like that

Well we're starting to see a trend towards legit things. Most bigger business are all making sure they are using licensed software. It may not trickle down to individual level yet but we sure are going in that direction.

So here is what I've noticed:

Major torrent website getting blocked on PTCL [Source].
Amazon, eBay, Paypal starting service in PK [Source] > a way to purchase legal movies, games, music etc.
Netflix is now in Pakistan [Source] > Use highspeed internet to stream legit movies
Pakistan Region based Xbox and Playstation official presence [XBOX PK & Playstation PK Twitter account] > Both accounts are less than 1 month old and a sign of things to come from these two gaming giants.

Apart from that, iTunes, the largest music store, is already present in Pakistan with their iOS apps [they might start supporting music and movies if they haven't yet].

We already purchase originals for PS4 and XB1, this could mean that the price will be regulated, a game wont cost 7.5K or whatever the F the shopkeeper wants at launch but probably lower to equivalent of 60 USD. We'll also start to see drop in prices for older games. Official warranty on consoles and accessories. This is my speculation, it is eventually going to happen one day, and I feel that day is not too far in the future.

PK going legit is very hard to imagine and even harder to implement. Because people think that only thing they need to buy is Computer. Everything else comes as bonus. Now changing that perspective is very hard. Good thing Youtube got unblocked. But we also lost the ability to enable monetization too. and Allah knows what else they will strip up once they start localize bigger companies here.

There might be some issue with IPTorrents. As for the PS4/Xbox Twitter accounts, they remain a pipe dream for now because they are clearly fan-made accounts.

Yes plzzzz. As long as legit softwares, games etc are offered at decent prices similar to what they are offered in India and other developing countries it's a good move. Also enable monetization for youtube, offer paypal services in PK etc will no doubt help a lot.

You reap what you sow. This is what happens when you take away choice from consumers. Even with 88% split going to developers, they can't recoup costs. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 is a massive hit for Sony thanks in big part to Steam.
