how about guns
it's legal? people carrying it?

water? is it safe to drink?
tab water? can was with?

health? malaria?

robbery? pickpocket?

GUNS?
The guns culture isn't as severe as in America, LOL. People do have guns, some keep it as hobby, other keep it as safety etc.

When i lived in Islamabad, i used to drink water from a filtration plant in my sector. I found it pretty clean and safe. You might get issues, i don't know, LOL. You can always go for bottled water like Nestle.

Tab water or Tap water? :p Tap Water isn't safe at all so don't drink it :p.

Mosquitos can cause Malaria or even Dengue fever(low risk though) but of course, you can always use preventive measures like using mosquito repellents or killer. They only effect in Summers though. They are rare in Winters.

Islamabad is safe but Robbery can still happen so it is recommend to keep a guard, especially, in case you have a lot of valuable things at home. The people of a mohalla usually hire a guard to roam the streets during night.

During my 4 years, i never experienced a single case of Pick Pocket despite travelling in local all the time for hours. I used to travel from Rawalpindi to Islamabad with valuables like my Laptop. I never got my pocket picked, never got wallet snatched. Even if i slept in a public transport, i never lost anything :p. So i can say safely that Pick Pocket situation is not a problem for Rawalpindi/Islamabad. It is a problem in Karachi though.

well there are some part of population which live on there ancestor trend to carry weapon as part of there culture and i don't want to name them you can Google it but as you are in Islamabad you don't need to worry but take caution to go out side of Islamabad . water yes its an issue try to use nestle water only because most of other water filter companies are not so reliable . health we have some major other viruses as well like brain eating amoeba so if you had pool in your house check chlorine quantity on weekly and monthly bases in it we also have dengue and it mostly trigger in Punjab like Lahore and Islamabad as well in most areas of sindh like karachi and so on . robbery is not happen frequently in Islamabad as far as i know and pickpocket is only done when you are in some crowded are like some exhibition or in bus .

Its a fact. Deal with it.

and make him feel welcome here.

I don't want any more shitty stories or rants about how much you hate your own country.

Plenty of foreign students have lived, are living in Pakistan.

AIESEC, the world's largest student organization has hundreds of students in Pakistan from Europe, East Asia, America and Australia who live here happily.

Pakistan is very comfortable place for foreigners to live an average every day life.

Lol, people don't roam carrying gun here. This gun carrying factor is only common in tribal areas and that too is just for defence. Keeping a gun is legal as long as its not a bazooka and you have a license.

Seriously speaking, I have been drinking tap water from the past 12 years and only started drinking filtered water just 1 or 2 years ago. I have never ever been infected with any water-related disease nor anyone from my family has. But, I live in Lahore so I recommend you to either get mineral water or get a filter.

Umm, the health situation is alright if you know your contacts. I can't comment much but AFAIK Dengue is more or less ended in Pakistan and no death has been reported due to it this year. Malaria is a very insignificant disease, heck I even got affected by it 6-7 years ago and it was easily cured.

AFAIK, pickpocketing doesn't happen much in Islamabad nor in Lahore. Robbery does takes place but just like any other country. The security situation is pretty bad in Karachi and Quetta, other cities are alright.

Islamabad is one of safest places to stay in Pakistan. If you plan to settle-down in this city, you are good.

Some recommendations:

1. Do not wear provocative clothing. You will attract lot of needless attention otherwise.
2. Avoid getting in to discussions about religious matters.
3. Buy a cheap mobile; avoid displaying expensive gadgets out in the open.
4. Follow rules for your own good.
5. Keep in mind the possibility of experiencing loadshedding of electricity and gas in your area where you plan to stay; you may also experience water shortage during loadshedding periods. You may find it difficult to adjust with these shortfalls early on but may get used to them with passage of time.
6. Do not be very chatty with strangers; just stick to the point.
7. If you plan to have your own residence then do get a powerful UPS installed in it to minimize the impact of potential power outages.
8. Pakistan is EXPENSIVE; spent wisely.

Also, once in Pakistan, do visit Lahore; very large and interesting city. :)

@Blastwave

We need to caution the foreigner about current challenges inside Pakistan. He or she will eventually find out the facts sooner or later. Also, denying the existance of extremists and poor is extremely wrong thing to do. We should not try to cover reality.

If I plan to settle in a foriegn country; it would be natural for me to get to know as much about its inside story as possible so that I may not commit any blunders.

True, but only looking at the extreme negative is wrong. We should give a balanced response. Personally, I have never met any 'extremist maulvi' and most maulvis I have met are one of the most tolerant and polite people I ever met.

@LeGenD123: We also need to take a look at his side of things. It's not like he is settling here permanently. And it's not like he will meet with the extremists or mingle with the poor. I don't think this is such an issue in Islamabad. It might be an issue in other cities but the OP was specifically talking about Islamabad.

Just like @AsadAbrar, i have yet to see such extremists but i am not denying their existence. There are plenty of foreign people living in Islamabad from all parts of the world. The OP won't have much bigger trouble settling in Islamabad. It is also close to places like Murree or Lahore, both of whom are pretty good places for visiting. Lahore is relatively safe to reach thanks to Motorway.

True. If we start pointing out the bad things, he will make up his mind that Pakistan in an extremist/poor/terrorist state even before visiting it. He won't look at the positive side of we are showing him the negative side only. ;)

My fellow brothers, I absolutely respect your opinions. :)

My intention is to convey a list of do's and dont's to OP on the basis of current ground realities of Pakistan. I am doing OP a favour here. I hope that his/her stay in Pakistan is a pleasant and memorable one.

I agree that Islamabad is among the best places to live in Pakistan.

@AsadAbrar

I shall explain my point with an example; suppose that I plan to move to USA. Now I would like to know from American people that which places in USA are safest to live in and any potential list of Do's and Don'ts. All of this is about doing sufficient homework which would help me in the long run.

Every large country has its share of problems and challenges. To expect otherwise is unrealistic.

Yup. I understand your point. So we have a general perception that Americans are racist and hate us. Well, my aunt and uncle lived there for 5-6 years 5-6 years in Canada, not even once did they face any problem from the Americans. Not even an awkward stare.

My point is that stereotyping people is wrong. There are good people and bad people. There are extremists everywhere: in Pakistan, in the US, in India and maybe in Korea too. This doesn't mean that there are extremists everywhere and blah blah. Good people will always be there. :)

If you are moving to ISB, chill out. There is nothing as such like disturbance which is recently going on in the country ( karachi, lahore ,etc ). You are infact more safer in the ISB. Secondly, u can easily manage in isb and it is infact very much modern to what we think. All the facilities are available easily.

Arm's and ammunition are available all over the world, do u need it :p ?

If you are stuck finding help in ISB, i am sure ppl from that city ( including me ) will help u out for the best of what u seek. Pakistani nation are right now disturbed for alot of incidents happening in the country. Do not please take them wrong as we are most welcoming country in the world. A few bad ***** politicians doing it for the revenge, disturbing peace and prosperity. Once you start making friends here, u will not leave em. Trust me .

Perceptions have been created to dishonor the prosperity of this nation. Till when the cruelty will be imposed :). All over the world we are finding these sort of cruel nature.

PS : Members why do i feel that we create nonsense for foreigners to enter in Pakistan. It should not happen again

Lol, you are scared as if all poor people are terrorists here armed with guns waiting to kill foreigners. :p

No, there's no harm. I will advise you to learn Urdu to interact better with the poor people because mostly don't know English.
