Facing issue with Nayatel after ONT Replacement

So last Friday, Nayatel workers came to my house early in the morning, claiming that its an emergency and we need to replace your ONT. As the internet, tv and phones weren't working at the time. They replaced my 5-6 year old Alcatel ONT with this new Huawei HG8247H ONT.

Ever since the replacement, I am facing this annoying issue on my laptop. While browsing the web, suddenly the internet stops working. WIFI stays connected but the pages won't refresh and skype disconnects, utorrent download speed goes to zero. This is happening ever 15-20 minutes and lasts for about 15-20 seconds.

I called their tech support guys twice and they keep saying that if the issue is only in one of your connected devices then it is not related to the ONT.....

So to confirm that the issue is only with my laptop, I connected my phone to the WIFI and called my friend on skype, and I was still talking with my friend while the internet stopped working on my laptop.

I need help identifying the issue so that I can get it resolved.

So the issue isnt with the OTN cuz otherwise your phone would have died too
Check your laptop

At my grandparents house, Nayatel has installed the same Huwaei ONT there and the WiFi radio does drop out every now and then, and it needs a reboot to get going again.
So far everything I've tried has changed nothing.
Simply put, the ONT is crap. My cousin also had the Alcatel one until a few days ago but it's been replaced with the same Huwaei one.
He uses a TPLink router though for WiFi so there are no issues and that's the only thing I can suggest for you, to use a router for WiFi instead of using the built-in WiFi feature of the ONT.

Hello!

In order to troubleshoot the issue by oneself:
- Install WiFi monitoring app on a smartphone such as WiFi Analytics by Netgear or install similar software on a laptop or use Neighbouring AP Information from within the router*
- Look around for free wifi channels with 1, 6 and 11 being preferred ones
- Login into the HG8247H (on a side note, do change the default password if you haven't as other nayatel users can access your router with default username and password via your WAN IP address)
- Goto the WLAN tab and make the following changes:
-- If you don't have really old devices, set Authentication Mode to WPA2 PreSharedKey
-- Also, set Encryption Mode to AES
-- In case of problems, revert to WPA/WPA2 mode
-- Disable WPS by un-checking Enable WPS if you don't use it
-- Hit Apply
- Select WLAN Advanced Configuration
-- Change Regulatory Domain to United Kingdom
-- Change to Fixed channel ... select the best one as shown by the App or software!
-- Change Mode to 802.11n if you don't have older 802.11g based devices (anything from 5 years ago should support 802.11n)
- Hit Apply

One can check the signal levels for wifi clients by going to Status Tab->WLAN Information->STA Information->Query
*One can check for free wifi channels by going to Status Tab->WLAN Information->Neighbouring AP Information->Query

Hope this helps in future!

Ahmed

Good post. Good advice even for non Nayatel users.

However, I think the ONT just sucks ass.

My grandfather just called me and asked why no new devices can connect to the ONT and devices that are connected have no internet access. I told him to restart the ONT and now it works fine.

I've already done the steps you advised on the ONT and it did help since the problem used to happen about 2-3 times a day, but now it happens about twice a month.

Hello Again!

Thanks!

Yes, it's sad that they put in such outdated stuff for wifi given the gigabit nature of FTTH ... I tried to go for PPPoE with another router, having this very same model, but there was some issue and I didn't press much being new to it all ... then wanted to try for myself but the router turned out to be locked ... didn't take long to figure out a way to access all settings ... but I haven't messed about yet ... I am currently using a WNR2000v2 with dd-wrt as a repeater ... maybe I'll try again someday!

Custom firmware ftw. I'm using that on 2 repeaters in my house. Work great.

Also, Nayatel uses PPPoE for authentication? I thought they used IPoE.

Does the ONT have an option for bridge mode?
Would be ideal to have IPs assigned directly to the router. Only advised if you have just internet and no IPTV and phone.

Custom firmware sure comes in handy!

Here is a screenshot of the WAN Internet Connection showing that they use PPPoE:

And here is one showing the Bridge WAN option (to be used with LAN Port binding of course):

If you call the tech support, they'll setup the connection for you but there is one additional step in that they use MAC binding at their end ... once the 'new' router is setup, they'll ask you to callback and tell you to ask them to bind your MAC!

Of course, many routers now offer MAC cloning for such a scenario and this step can be avoided!

MAC binding so that the server thinks that PPPoE requests are coming from the ONT?
Aah clever...

Nayatel used to do this in their early days. Before they switched my cousin to the Huwaei ONT, they had his setup like this:

Alcatel (non WiFi) ONT > Bridge Mode > TP Link WR740N with PPPoE authentication and MAC cloning

So that was his main router since the ONT had no WiFi. I wish they'd still do that, their new ONT kinda sucks and one has to use their own router with it.

Hello Again!

So I confirmed it today (I know it's been a long time) by configuring:
- HG8247H into Bridge WAN Mode (bound to LAN Port 1)
- Linksys/Cisco E2500v1 with Tomato Firmware for PPPoE (with MAC address cloned)

I was able to configure the HG8247H myself as I have user level 0 access (for experimentation) ... as well as with mac address cloned ... no need for tech support!

For anybody else, you can contact Nayatel's tech support and ask them to set the ONT in bridge mode ... fairly quick and easy! Then, by cloning mac address for WAN of ONT (note it down beforehand) or by asking to bind the mac address of 'new' router you can use your own router ... for internet atleast!

Do you use Nayatels HD Box? If so, how have you gotten it to work considering the external IP is now assigned to the router instead of the ONT.

I'm thinking of getting my PTCL GPON set up in the same way, but don't know how I'd get SmartTV to work with my ASUS RT-AC66U router.

Hello!

No we don't subscribe to the HDBOX service (as we have digital cable from local cable network), but, I believe that the HDBOX connection is bound to other LAN port with another VLAN so it shouldn't be effected ... can you please post a screenshot of your router's interface showing the WAN configuration page for confirmation!

Though we do have iVoD and that wasn't working ... wrote to them asking about configuration for it on anothet router ... recieved "Thank you for taking time and writing to us regarding your concern. It is to inform you that there is no need to change any settings for iVOD from your router. This policy is assigned from Nayatel’s end." ... I think I need to add the DNS for iVoD service!

I'll try again later to confirm ... have reverted back for now as others needed to use the internet!

Ahmed

Okay, so here's the deal, I have the Alcatel G-240W-A Fiber ONT that PTCL provided when they installed the connection.

In the WAN config page shown below, IPTV is unticked since I think PTCL uses a different way to get SmartTV working.

Here is the LAN config page, LAN4 is configured for Bridge Mode and SmartTV is connected to LAN4.

I was thinking to leave SmartTV as is on LAN4 and configured LAN2 for Bridge Mode as well. That way PPPoE can dial from the AC66U router and external IP will be assigned there, reducing the double NAT between the router and ONT.

However, I don't know if SmartTV will still work this way considering the ONT will have no Public IP (thats how it works, right?).

Will try and experiment this Friday.

The smartTV on the box should work as it's already a bridged connection!

The smartTV app works as OTP (Over The Top) service ... once you connect to your other router, it should work well!

Goodluck!

Ahmed
