Hi,

My pcs been having a weird ass problem.
so at first my mouse would stop working or hang for a few seconds repeatedly until I restarted the pc, this came and went.
I changed windows and messed with drivers, power settings etc and everything but the issue was still there so I know it's not a software issue.

Later I plugged in another mouse and it was working fine at first but eventually it started having the same issue.
I thought it was the pc itself so I tried plugging both mice in a laptop and they showed the same problem.
But the odds of 2 mice going bad in a week that were working fine before is highly unlikely.

So the question is, is there something wrong with my pc that is making the mouse i plug in fail eventually ?
like a power surge or something. When I was building it the psu i was gonna use was not working so I used an old ass psu from an hp pc which met the power requirements barely but was of questionable quality.
Something like this also happens to my keyboard but very rarely. and a couple of times my hard drive has been very slow to function like loading browser took 10 minutes but it got fixed.
So is this a power issue in the supply ?

i highly doubt your power supply has even got anything to do with your problem right now, coz if that were the case, your mouse/KB's etc are all added connectors and initially if there were supposed to be a problem, your main board would be acting up initially or just in simple terms, ur USB connectors are doing the drama. i suggest ,try to get a standard mouse (new/friends) and test it on another mobo, but in your system. meaning replace your mobo for the time being with another mobo and see if the problem persists. some PC shops offer pc parts on rent especially if you know a "Wakaf person :D". HOWEVER, there is a high probability of your MOBO shorting the USB slots. you cud however simply try a spare psu and see if the problem persists with a new/previous mice you have.

please mention your pc specs.. there cud be a conflict of old/new hardware (incompatible issues results in such cases).. also mention if you changed any item of the pc itself, aside from mouse/kb.

i3 2100
gtx 745
2gb x 3 Ram
250gb 7200rpm sata

for the psu i had it was not working so i just took out the psu from an old hp pc and used it maybe that is causing the issues.

anyway, I have like 3 ways I can go about this
a) get new mouse
b) get pci usb card
c) get a new psu

which one do I go with, very confused

first, your system specs seem fine even though ur using a 2nd generation mobo/processor as mine.

2nd, you are going about it the wrong way bro. even if you get all 3 things brand new,. you still might face the problem. however since now you mentioned you put in a used PSU from another system, try to tell the specs of that psu . +12v rails should have at least a nice 30amps to play i3+ systems (lower amps can support too, but would bottleneck the whole system if its used alot).

so now you have 2 valid options to eradicate the problem before purchasing something new. FIRST ... your mobo cud be the main problem. u need to show it to a good technician who can see if there is extreme dirt under the cpu fan. dirty/muggy mobo can short items. check the USB slots. keep testing it till an item doesnt seem to work anymore (try cheaper stuff like mouse or kb)

2nd option> yes, do replace the PSU if its really old looking or not even carrying the 25-30+amp on single +12v rail or dual +6v rails.

Usually the main culprit in this case is the Motherboard.
I'm sure your motherboard has USB Extensions that you can connect with cases or any other extra ports you have.
Simply change to those.

And yes, you should probably look on replacing the PSU as well since you said its old and could carry some issues that you dont know yet.
Unless you encounter those I think you're safe.

Your other issues are mostly related to something else.

Could be software issue. I remember I had some trouble with the mouse long time back, thought it was going bad. Turned out it was a new program I had installed.

Couldnt hurt to do a fresh windows install first before investing in new hardware.

Might be faulty USB connections on ur PC which damaged the mouse? Because as you say they are showing problems on the laptop as well.

Try buying a cheap 200-400 RS mouse, test it on your laptop first for a few days, if it works everything is ok, then start using it on your PC if same thing happens, Then the culprit is probably ur USB connection or PSU.

Probably a USB Port issue.
Make sure you Ground your PC Case effectively. Just place a piece of Rug/ Carpet under your PC Case.
Try to look for and get a PS-2 port mouse. USB Mice tend to malfunction relatively easily. Get a PS-2 mouse or USB to PS-2 converter.

Since, it is a relatively weird problem with no clear cut solution. It is wise to address things initially which are cheap. try changing mouse first, followed by PSU or motherboard if the problem persists. But I have yet to see PSU causing such problems.. Pretty weird to be honest.

if the usb devices are geting damanged then its the usb ports shorting those devices and hence the problem , i would get rid of the mobo .
