Alright guys... The cat dragged in some stuff... Not to mention that I attended an audiophile gathering (2015@Dubai) that had $11,000 Amps and $10,000 headphones. Got to try it all... Beyers, Audeze, Senns, Fostex (incl. Alpha Dogs), Oppo, HiFiMans, V-Modas, iFis, Oven-hot Tubeamps... Ah man. Too much stuff to jot down.
Stuff made my ATH-M50x and fiiO amp look like shit. Anyhow, there are different views to everything. Objective. Very Objective. My fav was the HifiMan HE1000 Edition X. Not sure if it's worth $4,000... well, it's not. But after a listen, I think I'd grab it were it around a $1k. Yup. Once you have a listen, you can say a lot about it, and the money demanded starts making a lot of sense. And man, I've heard by many that Planar Magnetics with open-backs lack bass and such and this and that... That just went away. Bass? Ah man, that OPEN SOUND STAGE and HEAD POUNDING BASS puts all other open and closed shits to shame. Something about the HiFiMan...
Some older, and less-priced HiFiMans actually felt terrible. Beyers felt very plasticy (as before). Senns are okay... Though even the HD800 looked flimsy and not quite committed to it's price. Oppos were ok (PMs). There's a lot going on with impedance(s) and amping so, that's another discussion altogether.
Anyhow, I got the M-Audio Monitors (Otherwise the same as AKAI MPCHP2s or something) and the Senn DJs. Yeah, pockets aint audiophile-deep yet.
I'll add more pics. Gotta say though:
The M-Audio is VERY, VERY FLAT. BASS? None. So, bassheads steer clear. Not very responsive to amping either. Otherwise, the metal make (yolks, rotation mech) and solid plastic cups with plush earpads is nice). Swinging infold is nice. Single-sided cable entries into both earcups (NICE!!). Built tough, really. Got them for around 12,000 for a nice deal. Recommended? Nah. Not really. Buy something else.
The Senns? Just wow. Major metal made with plastic cups (but very nice quality) to keep the cost down, they're nice. Looked big in the photos, but they're ok. Low profile and not too heavy. They're built to LASSSSSTTT... And yeah, if anyone is wondering, I tried the HD25 DJ, and despite what people say, these HD8s are WAY BETTER. The 25s are very light but too plasticy and flimsy. Plus I dont like on-ears. They sounded funny. Bass wasn't enough or pounding either.
The HD8s are very much like ATH-M50s, with EXCELLENT BASS EXTENSION and some pounding too (well, maybe my Audio Technicas sound nice cuz I modded them... took off the inner speaker cup, removed those white polyfills). I don't think there's any need for bassheads phones. Balanced and good sound is always better than just lame and stupid bass. In fact, just modding the ATH is gonna give you nice bass, while still retaining the rest of the sound curve.
The HD8s are well worth the price. Solid built. Nice, solid carrying case. Apart from the Protein Leather Foams, Velour pads... very nice and different. Smooth, not those fibery types. Different. Gotta try them later - looks good. Two cables, coiled and straight (though bit long, both of them). Single-sided cable entries into both earcups (NICE!!). No phone controls or mics but hey! Pros don't use headphones to CHIT CHAT. Screw that 5hit.
Anyhow, will share more pics. Real happy with the purchase. HD8s cost about 35,000 here. But well worth the price. Will last quite long I hope.
