2300 USD gaming system | suggestion

This is my first post here, please spare me If I unintentionally break forum rules.




I have a budget to buy a gaming desktop for about 2300 USD. I want your advice so my money is well spent.


I don't plan to use the hardware for gaming specifically but more
so as a "security testing" pertaining to my field which is cyber-security. So, I be running nix* , I see most of benchmarks are done with base o/s as Windows. I will use the cpus'/ram and disk to spin virtual machines , brute force attack etc.

If your main use is to run virtual machines, I think you need more core/thread count (so that you can run some more machines if needed). I'd suggest going for Ryzen 2700/2700x instead of the 8700k. The reason being that 8700k is 6C/12T and 2700x is 8C/16T. I don't know what distro you will be using, there might be driver issues if it's an unknown/obsolete one.

2700x + x470 motherboard should be about 55-60k.

With this budget I feel like you can fit in a PCI-E M.2 970 EVO (256GB) or a 500 GB 850 EVO comfortably. In HDDs, your choice should be Barracudas or Barracuda Pros (both from Seagate).

For the GPU, don't buy Zotac at this price point. Zotac's cooling solutions for their 10-series cards is notably worse than their competitors. You can buy much better performing cards at the same price, or at 2-3k more. Really shouldn't be a problem here.

Here's the hierarchy for 10-series GPUs in the order of their quality/performance:

MSI - Gaming X (Don't buy Armor or Duke cards, they're known to have sub-par cooling/coil whine and other issues)
