This year's installment to the Call of Duty franchise, Black Ops III, has just hit stores, and is predictably flying off shelves. As with every ceremonial annual release, Black Ops III raises the visual presentation standards for the franchise. There is, however, one hitch with the way the game deals with system memory amounts as high as 12 GB and video memory amounts as high as 8 GB. This hitch could possibly be the reason behind the stuttering issues many users are reporting.

In our first play-through of the game with its highest possible settings on our personal gaming machines - equipped with a 2560 x 1600 pixels display, Core i7 "Haswell" quad-core CPU, 12 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card, NVIDIA's latest Black Ops III Game Ready driver 385.87, and Windows 7 64-bit to top it all off, we noticed that the game was running out of memory. Taking a peek at Task Manager revealed that in "Ultra" settings (and 2560 x 1600 resolution), the game was maxing out memory usage within our 12 GB, not counting the 1.5-2 GB used up by the OS and essential lightweight tasks (such as antivirus).

What's even more interesting is its video memory behavior. The GTX 980 Ti, with its 6 GB video memory, was developing a noticeable stutter. This stutter disappeared on the GTX TITAN X, with its 12 GB video memory, in which memory load shot up from maxed out 6 GB on the GTX 980 Ti, to 8.4 GB on the video memory. What's more, system memory usage dropped with the GTX TITAN X, down to 8.3 GB.

This seems like a totally sloppy piece of programming to me. For a linear, heavily scripted game to use that much, I'm not surprised they gave minimal effort to the porting process.

Battlefront 3 looks wayyyy better and it has bigger maps and yet it runs better? Jesus. I was hyped for this for the splitscreen co-op, but I don't want it stuttering like crazy.

YES probably the indication of Bad Port once again PC Gamers gonna face. secondly the Video RAM and System RAM is way high if we look upon GPUz and Task Manager operation. Insanely high.

I've not played call of duty since 2009 so I'm not sure about what engine tech its currently running. But its obvious that due to the nature of consoles 8GB memory utilization, they did not properly optimize the game according to the strengths of the PC platform. Its funny that the latest Battlefront beta ran remarkably well on a fully loaded map with much more going on compared to a closed corridor shooter with the emphasis on TDM style gameplay.

Its obvious PC ain't their primary target audience, so my question is why even bother?

I never thought a GTX680 would feel ancient this quick. WTF does this game (or the previous Advance Warfare) really have, which hurts the performance this bad? I mean, Far Cry 4 with its HUGE environments looks 3x better, and still manages to run beautifully well on my GTX680. BO3 in comparison neither has huge environments, nor has that beauty, so i wonder what would be the reason behind that stuttering and sh*t.

I had to lower the "Render Resolution" to like 70% of my actual resolution (1440x900) and it still stutters many times during one minute. I also had to turn every other setting to medium, in order to achieve a smooth-ish 60fps (which still isn't properly 60). Couldn't affoard to play without that "Filmic" effect so didn't turn down the AA, but i have checked the performance with AA completely disabled, and surprisingly it has ZERO affect on performance. That's so odd <_<

How f*cked up this port has to be in order to become THIS bad? Pleasantly, it doesn't have those mouse problems which brought huge problems in previous games, so that's a huge plus, IMO.

Anyway, i am currently running the Nvidia 355.82 WHQL drivers. I'll see if upgrading to the latest version brings any improvements.

bAD PC Port man. as usual we see with grand Hyped Games. GTX 680 is a good Card.

Another thing it might be driver issue, as nvidia preference is now maxwell. so they dropped down kepler as low priority. But this game has some serious issues.

Phil should be held responsible for this shitfest too, just like Sarah, but it's highly likely that these decisions are coming from Satya. And this isn't even the end of it. More closures are coming.

if we are moving towards more and more popular trash across platforms that make billions for companies, I'm happy with all the barriers and exclusivity because at least that brings some pressure to create good stuff.

Started Dead Island 2, and i find it pretty lame. The story is shit. The characters are either cringe or bland (all 6 of them), The gameplay isn't fun. Even the goddamn zombies don't behave like proper zombies. They're all fast & intelligent unlike how zombies are supposed to be like. Any fan of "zombie" genre cannot possibly like this shitfest of a game. Dying Light 2 was million times better than this shit.

tbh gaming industry as a whole is failing much like tech industry. They have buckled down too much to Corporate suites then relying on passionate and innovative people. A corporate only believes in financial growth and shareholders.
