Audiences were chomping at the bit for the release of Zombieland in 2009 – and despite a relatively low budget, the film proved to be a hit at the box office, grossing over $100 million worldwide. The franchise was then given a new lease of life when Amazon produced a pilot episode based on the movie, with the potential to become an original series. The television series would have continued the adventures of the main characters, Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock, but the project failed to impress audiences, which resulted in the series’ cancellation.
Then, in 2014, news emerged that Sony Pictures were resurrecting Zombieland and that a sequel was in active development but no further details came down the wire. However, according to one of the writers, Zombieland 2 is not dead yet.
Rhett Reese, who recently co-wrote the R-rated superhero adventure Deadpool with his writing partner (and Zombieland collaborator) Paul Wernick, revealed during a Q&A podcast (via Cinema Blend) that the living dead will rise again in the aforementioned sequel:
It’s actually still in development over at Sony, they’ve had a couple writers take a crack at it, we’re still exec producers and we’re guiding and helping where we can and, yeah, I think there’s still very much talk about it, but I think it has to be right, I think all the actors and [original ‘Zombieland’ director] Reuben [Fleischer] all feel like there’s no reason to do it again if we’re not getting it exactly right.
While the Zombie-infested flick is still in the very early stages of development, it would seem that the creative team and actors attached to the first movie are keen to hit the nail on the head with the second installment. Even though this is a promising statement, the question remains: Will all of the individuals involved be able to loosen their demands and align their schedules to end up in the same room together for Zombieland 2?

Woody Harrelson, who was the biggest name in the cast list when Zombieland first came out, is currently filming War for the Planet of the Apes, in addition to having completed a number of movies that are due for release this year, including a sequel to the mystery thriller Now You See Me, which also stars hisZombieland co-star Jesse Eisenberg. In the meantime, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin and Eisenberg have all gone on to achieve individual success since they last worked together in 2009 – and they are also tied up with various other projects.
Over in the writing department, this could be the perfect time for Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to strike with Zombieland 2, hot on the heels of their box office smash Deadpool. However, at the same time, we can only imagine that every bit of their typing and penmanship is currently going into the script forDeadpool 2, which is why other writers – with Dave Callaham (The Expendables, Godzilla) reported to be among them – are currently working on the Zombieland sequel script instead.
On the other hand, Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer has no upcoming projects in the works, so he should be able to focus entirely on the sequel. Keeping all of this in mind, it would appear that there will either be a shake up of the original cast and production team, or that we have quite a while to wait for Zombieland 2 yet (assuming it does eventually happen).

[h=1]Zombieland 2 Possibly Set for Production This Summer[/h]

Upon its release in 2009, Zombieland made an impressive splash. Arriving at the height of Hollywood’s zombie craze, the film played off of familiar genre tropes, creating a post-apocalyptic world that never took itself too seriously and presented a peek into the hilarious side of the living dead. It was a modest success, earning nearly $100 million worldwide and generating largely positive reviews from both critics and fans.
Starring Jesse Eisenberg (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice) as “Columbus,” a young man attempting to reach his family in Ohio, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as “Tallahassee,” a no nonsense tough guy just looking for another taste of Twinkies, and Emma Stone (Birdman) as “Wichita,” who along with her sister “Little Rock,” played by Abigail Breslin (Scream Queens), just wanted to make it to an amusement park. The tongue-in-cheek approach of Zombieland, as well as some top notch cameos (most notable from Bill Murray, playing himself as a pretend zombie), led to the film acquiring a cult-status of sorts, with fans clamoring for more. Now, it seems as those fans may get their wish.

Bloody Disgusting reports that filming for the Zombieland sequel is set to begin this August in Atlanta. While the news is still a rumor, it’s the latest in a long line of indications that Sony is moving forward with the sequel, which has been in some stage of development for years. Specifics are scant at the moment, but a quick recap of the long line of events gives some indication of what fans might expect.

In 2014, it was reported that Sony was looking to Dave Callaham (The Expendables, Godzilla) to pen the script, taking over for the original writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool). Zombieland’s original director Ruben Fleischer (Gangster Squad) was to oversee the development of the script and was reportedly set to return to helm the sequel. Since then, Reese and Wernick have confirmed their return to the sequel as producers.
Earlier this year, Eisenberg discussed the film’s development and difficult road to production. At the time, Eisenberg said,
“I know they’ve been trying to do it for a while, and I know they’re trying to figure out exactly what will occur in it…So it’s a thing you have to get right. I would hope that it happens, and I’m sure everybody would be happy to do it if it happens and it’s good.”
That alone was enough to pique the interest of fans, whose hopes were further stoked by the reveal of a logo for Zombieland 2 at CinemaCon earlier this month, as Comicbook.com reported.

One possible impediment to making Zombieland 2 is the current standing of the original cast. The stars of the film have seen their stock rise since the release of the first movie. As such, it might not only be difficult to get the original cast back given their busy schedules, but their respective salaries could now be cost prohibitive for the film.
Of course, without an official notice from Sony, it’s hard to predict anything about the supposed sequel, or even confirm it as anything other than a rumor at this point. But the possibility is tantalizing, to say the least. A trip back into Zombieland has the potential to please audiences again, if it’s done correctly. For now, fans have little more than hopes and dreams, but those are both a little brighter than they were yesterday.
Screen Rant will keep you posted on Zombieland 2 developments as they arise.

[h=1]Deadpool Writers Currently Working on Zombieland 2[/h]

One of the biggest hits of 2016 is Deadpool, a movie that 20th Century Fox finally green-lit after several years of star Ryan Reynolds campaigning for the film. Due to its impressive box office earnings, a sequel was green lit almost immediately, with director Tim Miller and writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Rheese also set to return. The latter duo have thus been working on the script for Deadpool 2 – but that is not the only project they are working on, currently.
Wernick and Rheese have proven their ability to mesh comedy with action and now they look to be turning their attention to another franchise sequel. They are not joining a new property, but instead teaming back up with one of their older projects.
Both writers were guests on the latest episode of Kevin Smith and Greg Grunberg’s new show on AMC, Geeking Out, and gave an update on the state of Zombieland 2. It appears that they are going to take a more hands on approach with the sequel moving forward after being revealed to be executive producing the project. The duo told Smith and Grunberg that they are currently moving forward with the sequel and will start meeting with some of the original cast soon.
“That is breaking news that we’re on Zombieland 2 right now. We’re sitting with Woody [Harrelson] tomorrow and are going to sort of walk him through some of the stuff we want to do. All the cast is pretty excited.”

Although they only single out Harrelson as someone they are going to meet with soon, it sounds like the rest of the cast is excited and ready to come back as well. This should not come as a surprise given the ending to the first Zombieland, but it is nice to know early on in the pre-production process that Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin (all of whom have expressed interest in making a Zombieland sequel in the past) are on track to return too.
The big question surrounding the sequel will be the interest in this property returning. Zombieland came out in 2009, so this sequel should come out at least nine years after the first. By the time Zombieland 2 hits theaters, it could be too late. That said, as long as Sony follows the path of the first movie and makes it for cheap, then they should have no problem turning a profit. Harrelson, Eisenberg, and Stone are much bigger names now as compared to when the first was released – and with Reese and Wernick being close to Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds now, maybe he could make a (brief) appearance too?

Zombieland 2
does not currently have a release date. We’ll keep you posted on the sequel’s status as more information is made available.

Zombieland 2 Writers Reveal Script is Completed

Beginning with 2003’s British hit 28 Days Later — and continuing with Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead — the zombie sub-genre of horror experienced a massive resurgence in popularity, after having spent most of the 90s in a state of seeming hibernation. While this wave of theatrical zombie flicks would eventually die off again — with AMC’s The Walking Dead subsequently transferring zombie-mania to the small-screen — one of the last major entries in that cycle was the 2009 horror/comedy Zombieland.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Zombieland was set relatively soon after an apocalyptic undead outbreak wiped out most of America. The film starred Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as a mismatched group of survivors who eventually begin to form their own makeshift family. While Harrelson was far and away the most famous member of the Zombieland cast at the time, actors Eisenberg, Stone, and Breslin have all gone on to raise their stock considerably in Hollywood since.

While talk of a possible Zombieland 2 has floated around online almost since the first film came out, things finally got more concrete last year, when original writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick confirmed that they were hard at work on the script for the sequel. Trying to get the project greenlit was likely made easier by the smash success of Deadpool, which the duo also wrote. It’s been quite a while since there were any real updates, but that’s now changed, as Reese and Wernick recently spoke to ComicBook concerning Zombieland 2’s current status:
“It is [in active development]. We’re trying to get it going. All of our cast have read the script and love it. Ruben [Fleischer] is signed on. It’s just a matter of making our cast deals and making it for a budget number. All the cast have become superstars now so, we made Zombieland with 20 million, so it’s trying to fit that financial model into the sequel model so it makes sense for the studio and being able to pay the actors what they now get paid and deserve to paid.
We see [Sony Pictures chairman] Tom Rothman pretty frequently now and we’re pestering that dude. He’s like, ‘Please, enough with the Zombieland talk!’ We’re pestering him the way we pestered Fox on Deadpool. We’re not letting it go. We really want to see Zombieland 2.”

It remains to be seen what Zombieland 2 will actually be about, but the above statement at the very least confirms that the script is done, and that the cast members are pleased with it. Harrelson has always spoken fondly of his time as zombie killer Tallahassee, so one assumes he’s ready to get on board.
Budget and schedule may be sticking points for Eisenberg and Stone, who were both new faces when Zombieland came out, and are now certified A-listers. Stone, of course, just won an Oscar for Best Actress, while Eisenberg was nominated for Best Actor in 2010, and is now the DCEU’s Lex Luthor. That said, considering what Zombieland did for their respective careers, it seems likely that they’ll be willing to negotiate some type of workable agreement with Sony to return as Columbus and Wichita. It just wouldn’t be the same without them.

[h=1]Zombieland 2 Officially Happening With Original Cast[/h]

Zombieland 2 is officially happening and bringing the entire gang back together. Sony found a sleeper hit in 2009 with their own take on a zombie apocalypse. The first Zombielandfollowed Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) as he tried to survive the various complications that come from the zombie-infested time. His journey led him to meet Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone), and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). By the end of the movie, they formed a bond and won over audiences to the tune of just over $100 million worldwide (on a $24M budget).
The film continued to find a following in the years since and has continued to keep conversations of a sequel alive. There was even a point not too long ago where rumors began to run wild that the film had already been filmed in secret and was already screening for test audiences. That wasn't true, but the sequel is now definitely happening.

THR reports Sony is moving forward with Zombieland 2 and have all the pieces in place. The sequel has been written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese and will once again be directed by Ruben Fleischer, following his Venom project. They aren't the only familiar elements though, as Eisenberg, Stone, Harrelson, and Breslin will all return for the sequel. Production is slated to begin in early 2019 with the intention of releasing Zombieland 2 next October around the first film's tenth anniversary. President Sanford Panitch had this to say about the project:
This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time – and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse, and Abigail. These are some of the most in-demand actors and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.

This is obviously exciting news for fans of the first Zombieland as the sequel marks another adventure in this world. For those aren't familiar with the franchise, the sequel could help the movie find an even bigger fan base - especially with how the cast has grown. Eisenberg's starred in The Social Network, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the Now You See Me franchise since this role, while Harrelson took on The Hunger Games, True Detective, and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Stone may have made the biggest leap as she did The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 and then award-favorite turns in Birdman and La La Land. Breslin appeared in Ender's Game and Scream Queens since.
The returning cast isn't the only big get for the sequel either, as Sony's interest in Fleischer could speak to the quality of work he did with Venom. Wernick and Reese have continued their rise thanks to the Deadpool franchise, but have been working on this movie for years. THR shared some plot details for the sequel too as they'll journey "from the White House to the American heartland." In this adventure, they will encounter new kinds of zombies and more human characters. This does mostly line up with the previously leaked plot details. With the film just over a year away, it shouldn't be too much longer before more news on Zombieland 2 surfaces.

[h=1]Zombieland 2 Production Begins in January, Confirms Director[/h]

Zombieland 2 director Ruben Fleischer has confirmed that production will begin in January. The much-awaited sequel has been a film long in the making, with its production in the works since 2016. Sony announced a release date for Zombieland 2 back in July, but very few details concerning the film’s production have been released since. Now, Fleischer has finally revealed that Zombieland 2 will indeed begin production soon and release just in time to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the beloved original.
Zombieland starred Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin and followed their characters as they worked together to survive the zombie apocalypse. The horror/comedy proved to be a smash hit and was one of the most popular films of 2009, making approximately $100 million around the globe at the box office. Fans were demanding a sequel almost immediately after Zombieland was released. Unfortunately, for them, there would be a bit of a wait. News broke in 2016 that Zombieland 2 was still in development, and some even anticipated a release that year. However, it actually took another year for the script to reach completion due to writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese’s busy schedules with other films, such asDeadpool. It was only in July of this year that plans for a sequel with the original cast were officially confirmed.

In an interview with Fandango, Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer spoke with excitement over the fact that Zombieland 2 is finally moving forward and has a concrete shooting schedule. The filmmaker said:

“I'm thrilled. We're already actually starting Zombieland. I've been scouting and storyboarding and getting it going, and to get to work with that cast again is just an absolute dream come true. It's been really exciting starting to think about that movie, and to get to work with Emma, Jesse, Woody and Abigail once again is truly a dream come true. Yeah, we're just at the very early stages, but we have an amazing script, and we're going to start shooting in Georgia in January.”

Fans will no doubt be relieved to hear Fleischer finally confirm a production timetable. Those who enjoyed the original have been watching headlines closely over the past decade or so in anticipation for a green-light confirmation of Zombieland 2 moving ahead. Over the course of these many years, fans have encountered a range of headlines ranging from exciting (such as
leaked title and plot details back in May) to downright confusing (like an alleged screening of the sequel that was announced in June and then swiftly canceled). But, now, it appears that Zombieland lovers can finally rest easy with the knowledge that Zombieland 2 is indeed happening and starts production soon.

Perhaps it’s for the best that audiences have had to wait so long for Zombieland 2 to hit theaters. Instead of being rushed into a sequel by studios, which happens far too often, Wernick and Reese have had time to craft the story and script the way they wanted. The lengthy window of time between the first and second film has also allowed all of the actors from the original Zombieland to sort out their work schedules and make sure they could return for Zombieland 2. And, of course, for all of the dedicated fans, there is no better way to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the horror/comedy hit than enjoying the highly anticipated sequel on the big screen.

[h=1]Zombieland 2 Reportedly Adds Bill Murray & Dan Aykroyd[/h]

A new report suggests Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd will cameo in Zombieland 2. Zombieland was a surprise hit back in 2009, combining a great cast with some sharp comedy writing and gory action. The story found four mismatched survivors of a zombie apocalypse going on a road trip to visit an amusement park, and having various adventures en route. The movie is probably best remembered for Murray’s surprise cameo midway through, where the survivors crash his mansion and hang out with the comedy icon - until he pulls a prank that goes tragically wrong.
Despite the success of the film, it’s taken nearly a decade for Zombieland 2 to come together. This is mostly down to cast members like Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg being busy on other projects, and as the years passed it was assumed a sequel probably wouldn’t happen. Zombieland had originally been developed as a television series, with John Carpenter attached to helm the pilot, so writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool) attempted to turn the movie back into a show in 2013. A pilot episode was made for Amazon without any returning cast, but poor reviews meant it wasn’t picked up for series.

Now the entire original cast is returning for Zombieland 2, which reveals that the zombies have mostly died out, but have been replaced by nearly unkillable super-zombies. It was expected the sequel might try to outdo Murray’s cameo from the first movie, but according to a report by Geeks Worldwide, not only will the actor return, but he’ll be bringing his Ghostbusters co-star Dan Aykroyd with him.

Sadly, there are no concrete details about their part in the story, but they’ll apparently be playing fictional versions of themselves. In Murray’s case, this raises an interesting question since he died in Zombieland. That said, he died from a gunshot wound to the chest, so perhaps he’s somehow been resurrected. Either that or the movie just ignores his demise altogether. Either way, it’ll be a treat to see Aykroyd and Murray on screen together for the first time since 1989's Ghostbusters II.

Aykroyd recently raised eyebrows by suggesting Ghostbusters 3 may be happening and will reunite himself, Murray and Ernie Hudson. Fans greeted this announcement with heavy skepticism, however. The actor spent years talking up a third Ghostbusters movie prior to Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot, which never went ahead due to Murray’s reluctance to appear. The death of Harold Ramis - who played Egon Spengler - in the first two movies eventually led to the movie being cancelled.
That said, if rumors of Murray and Aykroyd appearing together in Zombieland 2 prove accurate, perhaps there’s something to the Ghostbusters 3 reports too.

[h=1]Zombieland 2 Casts Luke Wilson In Mystery Role[/h]

The cast of Zombieland 2 keeps growing, as Luke Wilson has joined the upcoming horror-comedy sequel. Released in 2009, the original Zombielandput a comedic spin on the ever-popular zombie genre, a formula that helped the relatively small-budget movie gross $102 million at the box office.
Ten years after Zombieland combined thrills and laughs to memorable effect, director Ruben Fleischer is finally ready to bring back the characters for a sequel, officially titled Zombieland 2: Double Tap. Stars Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin will all be back, to be joined by new cast members Rosario Dawson, Thomas Middleditch and Zoey Deutch. Most importantly, Bill Murray will return for the sequel after his unforgettable cameo appearance in the original, and will be joined by fellowSNL and Ghostbusters alum Dan Aykroyd.

In another casting move for Zombieland 2, Variety reports that Luke Wilson has now been added to the ensemble. Details on Wilson’s character are being kept under wraps for now. The sequel’s story reportedly takes place years after the events of the original, and sees the characters taking on new and more dangerous breeds of zombies while struggling to keep their makeshift family unit together.

With Wilson and Murray both on-board, Zombieland 2 is now a bit of a Wes Anderson universe reunion, as the two worked together in the quirky director's The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore. The two actors also both had roles in 2000’s Charlie’s Angels. The brother of Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson is best-known for playing regular guy roles in comedies like Old School, The Family Stone and – perhaps most memorably – Mike Judge’s prophetic satire Idiocracy. Coming up for Wilson are the drama The Goldfinchstarring Nicole Kidman and Sarah Paulson, the romance All the Bright Placesstarring Elle Fanning and Alexandra Shipp and Atom Egoyan’s new film Guest of Honour starring David Thewlis. Wilson has also signed on to play Pat Dugan in Stargirl, the new series from DC Universe about a teenage superhero.

It's not yet known what Wilson will be doing in Zombieland 2, but given his reputation as an actor who normally plays nice guys, it might be interesting to see him play against type and be the villain for once. Wilson of course has done a lot of comedy in his time, so he should fit in well with the rest of the Zombieland cast as they revisit horror-comedy world they created together way back in 2009. It will be interesting to see if the movie's unique mix of genres works again as it did ten years ago.
