Why dont new laptops offer better performance?

Over the past couple of years why haven't the laptops increased in performance (for the same price range)?

Why is there more focus on power consumption and other features like thickness, touch screen etc rather than on performance.

I was looking to replace my 3rd gen i5 laptop with a newer one that offers better performance but could not find a suitable machine.
In the same price range (even a little higher) all I could find was 4th gen i7 U series. Although it offers better battery life the benchmark performance is the same as my 3rd gen i5.

It seems that if I want juice from my machine I would have to buy a PC.

using two 4th gen i7 laptops , both with dedicated gpu , with 4700mq , excellent performance , U series processors for me are just crap , i5 4200m is a solid processor for mid range laptops,if ur budget is low , look for 4200, otherwise 4710hq and 4700mq quad offer excellent performance..........

What model are you referring to in i7 non U series? Also my range is ~70k
i5 4200m vs my current processor there in not much difference.

Laptops nowadays have improved quite alot on the performance side. Take a look at Gigabyte's P series. They look epic.
