Hello everyone.

I've got a 500GB WD My Passport External Drive, It was not responding, When I connected it to the Laptop, It was getting recognized and detected but not showing up in My Computer.

in Storage Management, It's black and Unallocated. But when you try to format, or do whatever with it. It just doesn't work.

I checked the cables, I also have a 1000gb Same Harddrive, I checked it's cable with this one and still the problem, So CABLES are ok.

What I'm asking is, Have anyone else faced this issue and knows how to fix it? or If i take it to a Technician, Will he be able to fix it up or It's just simply Dead and not fixable again?

P.S
It's not in Warranty.

Anywhere in the world :p
1. First of all don't take it to a technician unless you know it's someone you absolutely trust. Otherwise, be prepared to lose everything on the drive.

2. Try checking the drive on another computer if you can. Maybe your laptop is not recognizing it properly because of the unallocated space you just mentioned.

3. If none of the computers recognize it, try taking hard drive out of the usb port and connecting it directly through SATA cable. Means remove the USB port. My external died, but I was able to recover all the data from it, by connecting it directly through SATA cables.

4. If you need to save your data, you can try Recuva on torrent website. It's a software that helps to recover all the stuff on any external drives. At least get all your data out before your drive totally gets done for.

5. If you find, that nothing is working, ship the drive to me in Beijing. I will cover the shipping expenses for the return trip. I can get it fixed for you here easily. and return shipping will be on me :)

Already tried on a new PC, Still the same problem.

Changed cables, same.

The data in it is not so important, I just wanted to know if the drive would work again.

How to connect it through SATA Cable? I didn't find any place for it. There's just a flat USB 3.0 place, and that's all.

EaseUS Partition Manager stops responding when I try to Make a Partition/Format it :/

LIFEINABUCKET: thanks alot mate :) I would've probably done that but there's no important data on the drive, and I just wanted to know if I can use it again. thanks again.

In all fairness, if you can see the drive, i doubt its a usb port problem.

But for sata connection, you'd have to open your drive with screwdriver so the casing can be removed and then plug the acutal drive to SATA port.

I think My External HDD doesn't have a SATA Port? Right?

Because I don't know where to connect a SATA Cable :S take a look at the photo.

I have a problem with my external 500gb hdd too, but i think its on its way dieing its nlt dead at the moment, the problem with my drive is that it corrupted my data, while i was transferring files the drive would disconnect in the middle, and then i tried formatting it, quick format worked but normal didn't and checked for errors would get stuck in the middle.
Drives die too much

Well yeah.. as far as this is concerned you're out of luck.

Western Digital doesn't seem to make SATA connectors on their My Passports.

I guess you are out of luck as far as connecting it through SATA is concerned.

Maybe you could try hooking it up to USB again and getting it to work, but I think its time to accept the reality :(

Portable Are DEAD Mostly Due To Shocks And Mobility......!!

USB Flash Drives For Small Data Is Best Option....Other Than That......! Get Shock Proof Externals Which are Expensive But won't Fail anywhere In Middle Like This...
