The Uncharted spin-off that was being developed by Bend Studio under Naughty Dog's supervision has likely been canceled entirely due to issues.
The unannounced game in the Uncharted series has reportedly been scrapped due to development issues and the studio moving on to other projects. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier noted that there wasn't really much of a "game" there to begin with and was largely just a bunch of general ideas that never got off the ground and seemed to be more of a headache for Bend than anything else.
It was detailed last week that Bend Studio had been given an Uncharted game under the supervision of franchise creator Naughty Dog. The move came directly after Bend Studio had pitched a sequel to Days Gone, but Sony rejected the pitch. The studio took on the Uncharted project instead, as it was seen to be more dependable, but Bend Studio began to feel like it was losing its identity and asked to be removed from the project.
Little is actually known about what Sony Bend had in mind for the Uncharted game, but Schreier noted on The MinnMax Show that Bend successfully got Sony to take the studio off the game back in March 2020. Schreier also noted that the studio hadn't really locked down a particular angle or story, but it wasn't going to be Uncharted 5 and would be more of a spin-off. It's now believed that the game is dead, as Naughty Dog struggles on multiple projects and it was more of Bend's game than Naughty Dog's.
"I don't know that it exists, it was a Bend project. It was kinda supervised by Naughty Dog, I assume it's just going to disappear," said Schreier. "It was supposed to be an Uncharted spin-off, it wasn't Uncharted 5. For sure there will be new Uncharted games in the future. Who knows if that particular one will continue." The game was expected to take about four or five years to make. Since the game likely started development in 2019 or so, that means it probably wouldn't have released until 2024 had it come to fruition. Of course, there's always a chance it comes back in some other way or another developer is able to salvage some of the ideas and make something new out of it since it was so early on.
According to the previous report, The Last of Us is being remade by Naughty Dog itself and the team is also working on a multiplayer project for The Last of Us 2. Most of the staff is working on the remake as the multiplayer game is much further along. Whether or not Naughty Dog wants to pick up this unfinished Uncharted game after it wraps one of these projects remains to be seen.
Although Uncharted will no doubt be back at some point, it may be better that it remains dormant for a while. The beloved series ended on a high note and giving it the space it needs to breathe before diving back in. This break would allow fans to yearn for and appreciate another installment whenever it does come. Unless Sony is really adamant, perhaps PlayStation will go all generation without a new Uncharted game.
