Hey guys I need some help. I have the Tp link TD 8951 WD ADSL2+ Modem router. I want to configure a custom firmware (OpenWRT) on it for more advanced QoS settings. I searched about it and found that there is page for the router, but its listed as v1 and mine is v5.1. I wanna know if someone has experience with this model and custom modem firmware. Also, how do I backup the current firmware on the modem router? Thanks

1. OpenWRT for V1 is buggy as are all custom firmwares for modems. They never developed it for further models because people usually DON'T develop custom firmwares for modems. Only for routers and APs.

2. I have a V4 W8951 ND. Worst modem ever. Obviously no custom firmwares because it's a modem.

3. Not possible AFAIK.

well that sucks. Any idea how to correctly implement a decent working QoS setting on it?

Not sure. Never used QoS.
Why not use a router to configure QoS correctly and use the modem in bridge mode?

don't have a router. Will getting a router allow me to partition the bandwidth like 75% for my desktop and 25% to all other devices or something like that? Cause mainly online gaming sucks when you are getting ping spikes and packet losses cause someone is repeatedly hogging bandwidth over wifi

Routers can use custom firmwares.
That means better QoS.

any good cheap routers u would recommend? Something that can work with DDWRT/OpenWRT/Tomato. BTW have u tried QoS yourself, does it really work?
A used 1st Gen WR1043ND (TPLink). Very powerful.

Or extremely cheap
WR841N / ND
WR740N / ND

All have DD WRT support.

On most routers you can get tomato wont work it only works on broadcom based routers mostly all of the routers you will find are gonna be atheros that leaves you with DD-WRT,Openwrt DD-WRT has barely functionating qos and alot of problems rising and sometimes too unstable qos dosent work wifi drops out constantly i have tried it atm its not good and qos dosent function properly. for openwrt it dosent come preinstalled with any sort of qos you will have to install the packages and even then you will need atleast 8mb of flash space while most cheaper routers 841N for e.g have max 4mb so you wont be able to install qos on openwrt i suggest you go with gargoyle its easy to setup and qos is better then dd-wrt atm and on openwrt cant even install qos packages on my router try to get the 1043nd even if it is used while unless you have a 16mbit line the 841n will do unless you need better wifi but the cpu power will do but the 1043nd has more flash space so you have more features on pretty much all the firmwares and they will be alot more stable and function flawless

You don't even need to use a custom firmware on a router for that purpose. Just buy a TPLink wifi router that has options for bandwidth control. And you can apply bandwidth limit on IP ranges or individual IP address. Or you can apply global bandwidth limit for whole IP address pool except your desktop. Quite easy to setup and works without problem.

Unfortunately no. TDW8951ND's firmware doesn't have that feature. If I remember correctly TDW8968 was one of the first Modem+routers that had that bandwidth control feature. Unless someone modifies and port 8968's FW to work on 8951 there isn't any option to get that bandwidth control feature on 8951.

did you try setting up Google Payments? For UBL you may have to get it enabled for internet transactions, Naya should work without it!

Did y'all see the new Assassin's Creed trailer? They finally made a AC set in Japan & then they put a negro as the male protagonist. Ubisoft is taking cues from Disney, and it isn't gonna end well for them, just like Disney. Go woke, go broke!
