Ahoy There ...

Ive been playing Fifa09 on me console for quite some time now. Only recently i got shifted from Wateen's 512K onto Ptcl's 1Mb. Now i have reviewed many of the posts here on these forums to see that everyone is actually quite content with how their online prowess is faring.

However, i have realized that even a 1 MB isnt good enough for PSN ... I Still get a half a second or so lag ... and mostly, its hard enough to lock onto a proper Game Session.

I Just want some reviews as to what connection you guys use ... And any recommendations. At present, the only good option i have in Lahore is Ptcl 2 Mb. Should i go for that, or is that wastage ?

And while we're on it, does hooking up to the internet make your system go slow ? ... I Think mine starts to chug down a bit when i launch Fifa09, takes a lot of time to Sign in, and other game operations dont feel that smooth either, in their launching.

yeah that happens with fifa sometimes(the lag in game operations)......i play on ptcl 2 mb and it works fine.......sometimes i don't get connected with a player which never happens when i am playing fifa 09 on my xbox 360...so thats weird....

EXACTLY, The box runs much more smoothly when indulged in online operations.

This is bad man .... But atleast 2 Mb's gotta have a better kick to it eh ? =).

Im thinking of applying through Lse, on student basis... 2 Mb for 1400. Awesome. ! =D.

All i know is that my 1mb Connection aint cutting it out for me on PSN. =/. I Tried playing NFSU a couple of times too ..... Driving Games with a half-second lag is SUICIDAL brethren. I Assure you. =)

"ping" is the time the ball takes to get to the other side of the table. in computer terminology; it is the time data takes to transfer from you to the person you're sending it to.

and ping is pretty much related to the laws of physics and how nothing (yet!) can travel faster than the speed of light. therefor, if you play a game inside pakistan, maybe your ping times might be as low as 40ms (milliseconds). but you move on to a uk-based games and it might go uo to 200ms.

street fighter 4 is a good example here. i get 4 bars with (almost) everyone i play around in pakistan on my 2mb ptcl. but other than that, anyone else and i get a max of 1 bar (out of 5).

you can get a 4mb connection but you can't overcome the obstacles of time and space. you'll make the experience slightly better, since more download speed comes along with more upload speed which has to be better in some way.

but yeah. ping times = most important for online gaming.

That's interesting now ... And yeah i kinda relate to the bar thingy ... COD4 was a disaster ... I Had 1 bar out of 5 while others around me had 4 .... =/

So what you're saying is that i just gotta deal with this as it is ? =P. No hope in Pakistan for uber-smooth Online gaming ? ! =O.

A few points to remember:

1) Higher bandwidth doesn't mean better pings. The best pings you can get are from PTCL I think.
2) Pings (or latencies, the proper word) around 100-250ms are playable. Less than 100 are super.
3) PSN or most console games don't show your latencies in ms (milliseconds).
4) The "smoothness" of games depend upon the server you're playing on. Physical distance matters, but what matters more are the "hops". Think of the internet as a net with nodes (you and a server are nodes) interconnected by edges. Nodes and edges of graphs. Now the lesser number of nodes you have to encounter before reaching your desired node (server), the better the latencies but the time taken on a edge for a bytes packet is negligible compared to the processing time it takes on a node to "route" it to the next node - the least path algo etc. So it is possible that Middle East takes more hops to reach than UK.

We play on the Killzone2 servers, mostly EU ones. There's lag there at times but mostly it doesn't hurt the fun or game's core. Guys playing Fifa or other games might give you insights on them. Warhawk is on of the very few games that actually shows you your latencies in ms. On UK servers, I used to have a latency of 170ms that was good enough.

i just wanna add that wateen wimax sucks! i also got 1 bar and 2 if i was lucky in cod4. since i've shifted to ptcl (2mb) i get 2 bars all the time, but there's hardly any lag at al. sometimes i get 3 bars when playing with people from the middle east, and have also gotten 4 bars about two times!

here's somethings that you can do:

- take out the spliter from your modem. this helps a lot in syncing/unsynicng issues and might help the speed a little.
- if you can, make the number on which you have your dsl just for the dsl; get another number if you have to.
- if you can make the effort, get new wired put in from the pole into the modem. i've seen this helps as older wires usually rot away in this heat and rain and stuff.

btw, i got exremely low pings (that's a good thing btw) on wateen cable. but their download speed sucks, so i had to make the switch.

Anyway....never tried Fifa09 online...but whenever i play Fifa Street Soccer 3 ....they all are Arbi's there.......and i just dont understand what they are talking.. these words are from them ,Hala ,Mafi ,Jadeed... Any Good translator here?

Anyways, Baddy, yeah man i got the line changed, but i dont have a seperate number. That just might help. Currently, im getting around 1.6 Mbps as my bandwidth (Courtesy SpeedTest.net), so i dont know whether i actually possess a 2mb connection or a 1 Mb. Coz a 1 Mb connection shouldnt technically show such a high speed, right? and if its a 2mb connection, then ... IT SUCKS. ! =D

Shyber, im getting KZ2 Tomorrow inshaAllah. It just took me a day to notice how famous this game actually is. I dont have any idea about its storyline, or any special features and no idea about its prequel too. But im just buying for the online experience.

Hope its Worth it.

how come you know danish btw? curious.....

anyway, getting 1.6 mbps on a 1mbps isn't all that strange if you're testing on the local lahore or islamabad servers. i get 3.5 on my 2mbps! so it can happen.

but it's all about ping.

and it's also about the distance from your house to the exchange. i've seen the farther you are from your exchange, the worse your ping is gonna be.

and i've also seen that if your house is more than 2km away from the exchange (not on road but as the crow flies) then you need a better modem, otherwise there'll be unsyncing and lack of speed issues.

kz2 is slow to get into but like crack cocain after that.

And yeah man, my house is the farthest from Ptcl's exchange, the guy who installed it said so. That's the reason why he didnt let me get a 2 mb connection in the first place. He said it would be of no use. So this means, that i have to be stuck with a ptcl 1 mb for the time being .. ? No better option for moi. </3.
