Queries regarding Wancom

I'm really upset. I've been using a Connect 2Mbps connection. All was going fine with Connect, until suddenly my cable operator thought it would be a good idea to switch to Wancom. I've been using the same cable net for almost 12 years with Connect. It wasn't great, but it was okay.

It's been 5 days since the change and I'm having a massive headache. On local servers in Speedtest, it shows 1ms ping and around 2.4Mbps download speed. But on international servers, it gets much worse. Around 250+ms ping and 0.7Mbps speed! WTH!

The download speed isn't constant either. It keeps fluctuating. This makes downloads a hell of a lot slower.

I don't know if something is wrong on my end, but this is a HUGE downgrade. Now Youtube videos play in the lowest quality on auto and I can't watch Twitch streams. This wasn't the case with Connect. It was quite good.

I'm also noticing that my local area connection's name is now shown as "Unidentified network". Also, when I check in ipconfig, the Default Gateway section is blank, there is no gateway IP. Is this normal? This also wasn't the case with Connect. There was always a network name, like "Network 25", and a gateway IP was displayed in ipconfig.

This is their dialer. The Server IP is always like 1.1.1.x. That's also a bit suspicious to me. I'm suspecting that somebody's router in the network may be interfering? But Idk.

- Using a PC with Win 7 x64

- 2Mbps Wancom connection

- No router

I'd like all these clarifications at the earliest please. I'm really worried. Thanks.

Really can't say anything because of a lack of information. You could try doing a traceroute to get an idea of what sort of network your cable provider is routing you through.

The 1.1.1.x range is part of Cloudflare's Open DNS Project. My guess is thats the DNS server your PC is connecting to.

Sure, I'm willing to provide info. What kind of info do you require? I don't really have much knowledge of this stuff. I did try traceroute on a number of sites. Here is an instance:

So, it seems that they are borrowing bandwidth from Connect servers?

Anyway, I'm getting almost half or even lesser speed than I used to get from Connect. It's very depressing.

I'm on Wancom. It sucks. Connect was much better. But what 4G service do you recommend?
Ditch Connect and get Jazz 4G. Pings will be inconsistent if you do online gaming, but if you don't and you're just using it for browsing/downloading, then Jazz is the way to go.

This routing makes no sense. 1.1.1.6 is a cloudflare DNS IP so idk why thats the first hop your packet goes through but it does explain all the timeouts and slow site loads you've been getting.

Change the DNS Servers on your PC to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and then do the traceroute again, see if the 1.1.1.6 goes away. Also seems like there is a Connect router somewhere in the mix as well.

I do online gaming. What service(s) would be best for that, in the lowest possible prices?

Where do I change it? I opened Ipv4 properties, chose "Use the following IP address", and it's also asking me for an IP address, Subnet mask and Gateway.

Btw, my default DNS servers(that I see in Ipconfig) are 10.110.10.5 and 10.110.10.10.

Anything fiber based, if it's available in your area.

StormFiber, Optix, Transworld. Any of them will do.
It appears they may not be available where I live. I'll try to talk to Optix though. It appears they give you a wired line that gives you a phone and TV service?

Also is there any site of sorts that can tell me about all services being offered in Khi, so I can start researching?

SF and TW do that as well. If they're available in your area, they'll offer TV and landline as well. But Optix will only give you phone and service if their fiber is available in your area.

I see. So, my other question was: Is there a site of sorts which can tell me about all or most internet companies in Khi?

Also, what service are you using atm, and what package?

Thanks.

I'm in Rawalpindi, but I use Transworld's 70 Mbps Fiber.

The ISPs in KHI are:

PTCL
FiberLink
StormFiber
Optix
Transworld Home
Connect
Fariya

These are most of the common ones. The rest would probably be cable net operators who rely on either PTCL or Transworld for bandwidth.

try this though I'm not sure this will make much of a difference.

Try getting me a traceroute once its done.

If it doesn't make stuff better, you'll have to talk to your provider about their shitty routing. The cable wala probably wont understand this so just tell him that your speeds and pings are messed up.

Though I would go with what murtaza said, switch providers.

Stormfiber and Optix provide a wired fiber line to your home and offer internet+TV+phone services. Transworld provides a fiber line as well but just provides internet for now - they'll be launching their expensive af TV services in the coming months (they have no plans of providing phone services).

Stay away from fiberlink - its more trouble than its worth. Constant headache.

PTCL is a hit and a miss. Completely your luck. I had it for 5 years. Jab chalta tha best tha but then would go down for weeks.

Then you have your local cable walas. There's always more than one operating in any area so ask around. Maybe you'll find someone else. (fariya/connect/wancom etc) provide services through the local cable walas.

Fair warning, fiber services ki installation is expensive but its well worth it. Out of all these options, I would personally recommend Stormfiber (based on support, value for money and services offered) BUT if you game, you should ask around about what pings are to be expected on their network from the dedicated Stormfiber thread in this forum.

Also, its 2018, do you seriously not use Wi-Fi at home or do you have another connection for mobile devices?

I also talked to Wancom, and they said that the Server IP in the dialer being always 1.1.1.x(where "x" is always a number from 1 to 10) is because they assigned the cable operator some limited quantity of servers. Idk what that means.

And you're right, I'm sure the cable wala barely knows any of this stuff. The most he'll do I think, is come to my house, open a few sites and then tell me, "Theek tou chal raha hai." SMH

I'm also very unlucky in that my local cable wala has a political background and has never allowed anyone to enter the area and start their business. It's either him or nothing.

As for Wi-Fi, yes we are a bit old fashioned. The cable provider does have an option of purchasing a TP Link router from him, for all your Wi-Fi needs. I never bothered because his service never satisfied me. But now it has gotten much worse ever since he switched from Connect to Wancom. Are you suggesting that I should consider Wi-Fi services as well, like EVO Charji or Jazz?

The routing is still messed up - nothing you can do about it. Switch to any one of the fiber providers.

Jazz/EVO won't be good for pings man, wireless services seldom are.

And by WiFi I meant, don't you use internet on your phone? You'd need wifi for that.

Yeah, I understood the question. No, I seldom use internet on phone. I was just thinking about changing that, but then this happened.

So do these fiber services have any sort of portal where you could download movies, games, etc.?
