Note 4 N916L 2g only working but not regiestering to 3G

Salam guys

i have a strange problem with my note 4 N916L (it is a note 4 exynos chipset with Cat 9 LTE) it is only registering on network if i select 2G only. My phone is unable to register on 3G. 4G not tested. though it shows signal for 3G and 4G for all networks when i manually search for the network but it is unable to register on 3G. so it means anttena may not be damaged.

you can see in screen shot it is detecting all networks

i have tried almost every thing i.e hard resetting, reflashing, using a costum rom but of no use.

one thing more its NFC is also not working properly as it cannot be disabled the switch is greyed out. phone gets really hot when it is turned on. i freezed it using titanium. i dont use it anyway.

phone is currently on default korean 5.1.1.

share anything which can give help of any sort i am open to suggestions.

can you use the code *#*#4636#*#* ? if yes try changing settings from there, or install a custom rom, usually problems are solved whith custom roms, I have used many korean phones just switch the settings from network settings

This is common with Korean phones, my S3 used to do this as well, but the bigger common factor here is that both were L variants. S and K korean variants aren't that difficult to fiddle with when it comes to roaming. However, L variants and their differently built ROMs can be a bit of a pain. Since you're on 5.1.1, I'd recommend flashing up to 6.0.1 and doing a hard reset.

As for the radio hardware, the phone supports 2100 MHz 3G, 850 MHz 3G, 850 MHz LTE and 1800 MHz LTE as well. All of those bands are used in Pakistan, so theoretically it should connect to 3G and 4G of all networks.

It used to connect without any probelm but since few weeks it is not. As i have shown screen shot it is detecting all networks but now only connects to 2g when forced to 3g only it looses signals and fails to connect. Yesterday i saw a similar post on xda and that guy has 916k varient and he is facing same problem as mine lets see what response he would get.

How to change raoming settings? I am rooted so phone info app will help.

That is strange this means its a hardware thing then if it use to work fine before

it can still see 3G and 4G networks in mobile network search the screen shot was taken few minutes before making the thread. the only thing is the phone is unable to register itself on 3G of any network.

I am a little busy these days and the phone is in use by my Mrs so taking a backup and clean flashing requires a little time. but i will flash it with the latest firmware. hope it works or the last hope is to take to a shop.

one of my friend whose brother has a mobile repair shop told me that PTA is blocking IMEIs of imported/smuggled sets and many users are facing same issues as mine mostly in Islamabad. Mostly phones which are dual sim are blocked either one sim or both (basically IMEIs).
so to test it today i took a Metro ride from I-8 to saddar and as soon as i reach Faizabad phone registered to 3G :fp1:telephony functions and all the other things works as usual. i spent 1 hour in saddar mostly in Singapur plaza and then went back home and when again i crossed Faizabad phone lose 3G signals. :fp1:

dont know why SOB PTA has blocked my IMEI

so to tackle this problem i have been told to either change its IMEI or sell it to someone :frown:as atleast it is working in RWP.

Use the links in THIS thread to check if your IMEI actually belongs to an SM-N916L, because I bought a N910F Note 4 once, checked the IMEI online and it showed up as SM-N9108V, which is the Chinese Dual SIM Note 4.

Do check if the IMEI has been changed, that could be why you're facing this issue.


Secondly, if an IMEI has been blacklisted by PTA, you can type your IMEI in HERE on PTA's website and check if your phone is blocked. And to follow up, if it has been blocked, you won't be able to register on any network at all, not only on 2G and not on 3G.

I had a blacklisted Galaxy S5, it would only connect to the network for barely 2-3 minutes and then the signal bars would disappear and turn into a 'Cross' sign and it would say Emergency calls only, and during those 2-3 minutes where it would register on the network, I couldn't do anything, no calls, no texts and internet not working regardless of there being a 4G icon at the top.

i have checked i have a legit N916L imei which is not blocked according to PTA website.

also thought if it is blocked then it should not work on 2G as well but it is working in ISB and on 3G and 4G in RWP.
