I am looking for a backup hard disk. I was going for external desktop backup drives as they will have better performance in comparison to the external drives in small form factor (2.5") but I read somewhere online on a forum that the companies use sub-par hard disks (older models and rejects of the internal drive batches) in those which result in corruption of data and a lot of drive failures. I saw reviews of external drives by WD and Seagate on Newegg and many reviews confirm the same view. A lot of those mention the drives failing quickly. A reason mentioned for this is also the fact that the 3.5" drives need ventilation but the enclosures are almost air tight and without any fan.

I know of someone whose WD Passport has corrupted the data which was backed up on it. The drive was hardly used, only connected for backup purposes. So can someone, who has purchased external backup drive(s) please tell of their experience?

I do have the option of just purchasing the 3.5" internal drive and use that with external enclosure but then again, the enclosures I have seen so far in the market are "cheapo" and without fan. Another option is going with 2.5" external drives, as they are made for laptops (and thus don't require ventilation like the desktop models) but skeptical due to the mentioned reason: I need it for backup, don't want any data corruption.
