Nayatel questions

Just moved to a new area in Pindi and wanted to give Nayatel a shot. Didn't want to go with PTCL as the local exchange doesn't support VDSL (so at best going to get a 10 Mbps connection).

Regarding Nayatel:

1. How is their customer service right now? I heard it has degraded.
2. Are the package prices given on their website inclusive of taxes? Because they are hella expensive for being bandwidth/volume capped. (Cries for Transworld!)
3. How long does the installation take after applying?

Thanks.

I got it in Rawalpindi 2 years ago and had the setup moved to another location in Rawalpindi last year, so my responses are based on my experience.

1. Excellent, still.

2. Yes, they are.

3. A week at max.

Those prices are NOT tax-inclusive, because you still have to pay withholding tax.

Otherwise, customer service is still good (if you don't want to call, you can either WhatsApp them, or SMS them), and they take around 5 working days (which turns out to be around a week in some cases).

Been using Nayatel since 2008
1. Topnotch
2. As has been pointed out you will be charged withholding (advance) tax based on your package + fixed rate for CATV if you subscribe. If you are in Pindi you will be charged a 19.5% provincal tax as well. These are mentioned on this page:
Home Packages - Nayatel

3. Depending on the extent of civil work required can take up to 14 days or more. Way back 10 years ago it took them 3 weeks for my installation. (Islamabad)

You should note that Nayatel filters all ports and blocks portforwarding (as they provide their own ONT/Router combo). You *can* ask them to open ports but it is a pain.

So torrents are a problem? Furthermore, can't we just get their ONT and use our own router?

I can download torrents without any throttling/problem.You can get their ONT and use your own router in bridge mode. They will help you set router in bridge mode and will give required credentials.Their customer service is still great.

No, torrents are not a problem as the ports are filtered not blocked. Even if you see a red !, you will be able to seed and other leechers will be able to 'see' you.
There is an entire thread on PG about Nayatel and their port blocking.

No, you cant use your own router. You may use your existing router as a wireless AP or use an external AP which is what bridging via wifi or ethernet allows

Ah, sweet federal territory. I am in Punjab so that provincial tax has sort of become a deal breaker on my end.

Thanks for the detailed outlay btw!

I didn't understand the last line. Is it Withholding tax? How can one claim it from their employer?

Yes, it is WHT. Since, it is an advance tax, you can claim a refund on it from your employer if you are a salaried individual (i.e, your income tax gets deducted at source). If you are self-employed, you can still add it in your tax adjustments when you file your return via FBR's portal at the end of a tax year.

I understand a bit but I'm really an amateur at this. So, WHT or advance tax is a form of income tax? Also, what if somebody is unemployed?

Also in general, how do I know if I'm charged WHT on any product? Are there any other forms of advance taxes besides WHT? I think many people don't have knowledge of any of this stuff.

Thanks.

There is an entire With-holding tax document on FBR's website. You can download it and see the various taxes collected in WHT mode. Some are considered as final tax and can't be claimed, but you dont have to pay any more tax on that particular income like profit on Nat. Saving schemes, saving account profit etc. Other is collected in Adv. tax mode like Internet, Car registration fee and renewal fee.
To claim it if fill up IT-3 (available from FBR's website) and submit it to your employer. He is bound by law to adjust it in the income tax collected on your pay.

Yes, it is an advance tax that, by law, should total towards your income tax. For example, if you pay 20,000 as income tax and have already paid 4000 as WHT on your PTCL bill, you final payable tax would be adjusted to 16,000 (for self-employed). If you are a salaried employee, your employer will cut 20,000 from your pay stubs and deposit it with FBR. Since you have already paid the WHT, you are effectively paying 24,000 as tax against your requirement of 20,000. In this case you fill up an IT-3 form and submit that to your employer, they will adjust it in your income tax and give you a tax credit.

Some of the major WHT are charged on:
  • Mobile phone bill/prepaid service
  • Electricity (only if your bill is > 75k)
  • Internet/telephone bills
  • Debt profits (saving account, certificates etc.)
  • Cash withdrawals
  • Motor vehicle tax (both on purchase and transfer)
  • Imports

I am not certain of how the unemployed figure into this. Maybe the tax is final for them.

You will be able to connect but will be NAT restricted. I am not sure now, but 2 years ago I was not able to create a PS account on Nayatel had to use Jazz . Neither Nayatel nor I was able to figure out why. Nayatel offered to send a team to my home to figure it out, but their charges were higher than simply using 3G. I never played MP on ps4 but have played a bit of overwatch on xbx x. It is tolerable but not great

Nayatel New connection

Yesterday I called nayatel and asked for connection. They said that they will survey the area, I got a text later that nayatel is not available in my area. I called them again and told them that my neighbors are using nayatel so why can't i get it. They said that there is no space on the dabbi, it is saturated. I asked them whether they can install a new dabbi or not. They said that if they get 30 connection requests from different houses in the same area then they will install a new dabbi.
I guess I will be stuck with PTCL's ADSL for the rest of my life. :(

Maybe you won't be stuck - just have random people requesting Nayatel to install connections at different (random) house numbers in close-by streets.

Not guaranteeing it'll work, but...
