As you can see, my Motherboard has pretty high temps on idle:

The problem is that the screen gets filled with a color and some awkward buzz sound comes out from the speakers, and I've to force restart it to make it working again. It only happens when I'm gaming.

Interesting thing is that it only happens on few games like Far Cry 3, Batman Arkham Origins, Mad Max and few others. I completed TW3 and only experienced this issue once or twice.

The Motherboard is a microATX. Should I apply some kind of thermal paste or get a better MOBO? Or perhaps installation of some kinds of coolers/additional fans?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

wtf dude.

see if some thermal paste is spilling on the socket!

sounds weird.

Try letting some fresh air by removing the side panel

Possibility is that MB sensors are broken, Coz that 114c is too damn high. burn anything that come closer.

might be something very wrong happen with this unit. Try RMA it if still in warranty.

I didn't apply any thermal paste on the socket.

I guess so. Because at that temperature the component starts to evaporate lol. I removed the side panels, no luck.

I don't think MB is causing the freeze problems during gaming because this problem has been occurring since last year.

I believe it's still in warranty so I'll RMA it if there's no other option left behind.

My confusion is that is it the Motherboard that is causing the PC to freeze and create buzz sound while gaming or the GPU?

hmmmmm. ,, see the below, i took this snap about 3 months back.. i still have this mb. and it always show such temps regardless gaming or not but no issue in working ... so probably sensors issue

OP might facing this issue due to his GPU or PSU, his pc specs show 280x + vs650, not a very much reliable PSU,

Thanks for your very useful input. Should I replace my GPU or PSU? What tests do I have to perform to make a solid decision?

i cannot say it is necessarily PSU/GPU issue..

do u get this temp. of ur mb. while gaming only? or when idle as well?

you can use "core temp" or "real temp" and note highest CPU temps while gaming, also use MSI After burner for temps and increasing fan speed ...

many people getting similar mb. temps. ... u can google it...

MB can show wrong readings due to wrong sensor or broken sensor. you can use program as well.

This PSU known to be crappy in most cases. for low end it is fine. but still it can give enough power to the components but i doubt on high loads like FC4 , Withcer 4 at ultra graphics, when psu followed with high load, it might cause any rig to act weird or differently. due to instability in power and efficiency. sometimes PSU components are too weak to handle high load. like low degree capacitors. i recommend you to Change this PSU ASAP. It might give you issues for future upgrades. thermaltake smart series is better even.

As far as GPU is concern, Sapphire 280X i heard from reliable source, that it is too artifacted then any other brand. may be one of the reason it causing those issues. but i am not sure that it is only GPU. you have to examine both items thoroughly.

High loads have impact on both PSU/GPU.

On idle. I took your advice and installed MSI Afterburner, captured the highest temps of CPU - it's between 58° to 60° which is just fine. The GPU temperature is 70° in-game which is also fine. I'm not sure about the MOBO but I think PSU is the culprit here.

What I'm going to do is to borrow a friend's GPU (GTX 760) and see if the problem still occurs or not. If it does, then PSU is the culprit and if not, then I guess I gotta RMA my GPU.

I'll keep you guys updated. Any more input is HIGHLY appreciated. Thanks so far experts! :)

Most of the time these type of software do not depict the actual temp on the motherboard.
115 or so is impossible temp basically.
this kind of temp yields smell of component burning and affect the temps of other components such as GPU/RAM because everything is attached to the "Mother"board.

Physically inspect the temp just after switching off the PC and power.
until you find it Unbearably hot the temps are probably incorrect.

I remember i had a brand new build in 2008.
the mb showed ridiculous temps.
went to galaxy (when it was worth it). they installed the latest firmware and the sensor temps became realistic.

Yes, I did this and it was bearable so most likely it's a problem with the sensors. What is this “firmware” thing you talk about? Is it some kind of a software?

firmware is the core virtual program (with a precise set of instruction) that runs to operate an electronic device.
for now you just need to install the firmware upgrader program and upgrade it as per the instructions.
however i will not recommend that to you because upgrading firware has a risk and because you are not familiar with it. id advise you to let it be.
it'l be fine.

also it is worth noting that the motherboard itself is nothing but a platform, the components attached to it are what that counts and those component can amplify the temperature and pass it on to the platform (i.e CPU or GPU getting heated up can pass the heat to the motherboard). The motherboard itself is not designed to heat up unless there is a flaw/short in the ICs attached.

Ahh. Got it. So basically if one of my components is overheating, it'll pass the heat to the Motherboard so technically it's not the MOBO which is overheating but the component that transferred heat is causing the rise of temperatures of MOBO. Good information.

Turns out the GPU was the culprit here. What I did is that I borrowed my friend's GPU (GTX 760) and played the cinematic scene of Mad Max that was causing the awkward problem. My GPU wasn't lasting for 5 minutes on Mad Max cinematic scene while my friend's lasted for the whole scene.

Then I played Far Cry 4 because I was getting the same problem on it, my friend's GPU was as clean as rain in this test as well.

Afterwards, I reattached my GPU (R9 280X) and it gave the same problem. So I'm gonna RMA my GPU on this Monday. Thanks everyone and much love!
