The adamantium-clawed mutant gets his due

He’s the best at what he does — and he’s about to do it again. Wolverine, the Marvel Comics mutant with a healing factor and an adamantium-encrusted skeleton, will star in an upcoming game from Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games. Logan flashed his claws for the fans in an all-too-brief announcement trailer during Thursday’s PlayStation Showcase.

Wolverine has long been one of the most popular Marvel Comics characters ever, bringing his fighting talents to the X-Men, the Avengers, and many more. In a post on the PlayStation blog, Ryan Schneider of Insomniac Games said that while developers were working on Spider-Man, they would often talk about their ideas for making a game about Logan.

“Wolverine continually came up as the character we’d be really stoked to work on together,” wrote Schneider. That’s due in part to some core similarities between Logan and Peter Parker, he continued: “Both heroes feel deeply compelled to defend people who are less able to do so.”

Wolverine is a standalone game, with Brian Horton serving as creative director and Cameron Christian as game director. Christian was also the game director for Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Insomniac Games will have its hands full with potential storylines to use as inspiration for the mutant’s upcoming game, although the teaser included some hints as to the tone that fans might expect.

The trailer showed the interior of a mostly-destroyed bar as the bluesy notes of James Carr’s “The Dark End of the Street” play in the background. Broken furniture and unconscious bodies are strewn about. Who could be responsible for this carnage? No doubt it’s the grumpy Canadian man sitting by himself at the bar, wearing a flannel and a cowboy hat, slinging back a tumbler of whiskey.

The board on the back of the bar actually stipulates the name of the establishment — The Princess Bar, a location in Madripoor. This same bar recently had a cameo on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and as my colleague Susana Polo explained in an article about this bar, it’s “been a frequent location of X-Men stories ... Wolverine even has his own alternate identity there as a notorious guy named Patch who looks just like Wolverine, but wearing a suit and an eyepatch.” Sounds like a good clue as to what this game might be about, eh?

Insomniac Games’ Wolverine is currently in development for PlayStation 5, with no release window announced as of yet.

Good for Sony that it acquired Insomniac Games, because, of all the reveals at the showcase, the only exciting ones are being developed by the latter.

Looks like Marvel is pleased with Insomniac, and why wouldn't it be? They're an incredibly talented studio, and if anyone can pull off an excellent Wolverine game, it's them.

Yeah that INSOMNIAC purchase sure sounds much sweeter now given the high value properties the studio is now working on. I was of the opinion that studios usually work on 1 game at a time so i am just curios how the studio is handling these 2 super big projects.

Venom hype!!
Yeah, this would be a better approach. Individual campaigns that overlap at certain junctures and both Spideys can team up to take on a major enemy etc.

Yeahhh I didn't mean I won't play single-player only games at all. "Primarily" a multiplayer focused player means I'll still play the occasional game from Nintendo (BOTW2 is my most anticipated game of the forever), Naughty Dog, Insomniac, and Housemarque 🤜

The rest? Yeah, not interested unless maybe on a deep discount 🤷‍♂️

Not counting Sucker Punch and From Software, since their games have both coop and pvp, which I often play. Hopefully, Sucker Punch continues that trend 🤜

Yeah, stuff like Horizon FW and GOW Ragnarok no longer appeals to me 🤷‍♂️

Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch do multiplayer, and Returnal/Nex Machina/Resogun aren't what I'd call cinematic 🤷‍♂️

But they also do single player, primarily :ROFLMAO:

We can talk about Housemarque when they are able to deliver the CerebralTiger coveted "must play" game (same for Lulsomniac and Sucker lulz). So far, they've failed, whether they charge $70 or $20 for their games :ROFLMAO:

Tell that to the 100s of hours I've spent on the multiplayer modes in Naughty Dog's games and the multiple hours spent on Ghost of Tsushima's multiplayer 🤣

And how many of Sony's studios have delivered the "coveted" 90+ metascore? Naughty Dog and Santa Monica (I completely disagree, however, as does Necrokiller 🤣)? The last 90+ game from Guerrilla was Killzone 2, and that had multiplayer. The studio has become a parody of itself lol.

You can spend 200hrs in their MP modes if you wish but that doesn't change the fact that those studios primarily make single player games

Does CoD release MP as add-on package months after launching a single player campaign first? Nope :ROFLMAO:

Last I checked, Uncharted 2, 3, and 4 had multiplayer included with the single-player game. They didn't do a multiplayer mode with TLOU2 because they've been working on a multiplayer-only game (probably something like Destiny or The Division) 🤷‍♂️

You can [call it whatevever] you wish but that doesn't change the fact that those [games have dedicated multiplayer modes with an active player base, even today]
🤷‍♂️

Imagine being thrilled about Gears and Halo's multiplayer modes despite them having story-driven campaigns...

LMAO @ active even today. When was the last time UC4 MP got new content? Gears 5 and Halo MCC are still getting updates 🤷‍♂️

Imagine thinking a single player like Tsushima is "multiplayer oriented" because it got one mode post launch :ROFLMAO:

lmao @ updates. Aisay naam ke trivial updates se behtar hai koi update na hi aye. Then again, I'm talking to the person who considers Battlefield 2042 the messiah of multiplayer shooters 🤣

Tsushima has multiple multiplayer modes, so you're wrong there too

Bechaari UC4 MP to wo trivial updates bhi naseeb nahi hui beyond the first year. Then again, I'm talking to a person who makes a janky rope montage as the messiah of third person shooters, while fulfilling his actual fantasy of gyro aiming with Gears on PC :ROFLMAO:

worth playing for "multiple hours" no less :ROFLMAO:

Started Dead Island 2, and i find it pretty lame. The story is shit. The characters are either cringe or bland (all 6 of them), The gameplay isn't fun. Even the goddamn zombies don't behave like proper zombies. They're all fast & intelligent unlike how zombies are supposed to be like. Any fan of "zombie" genre cannot possibly like this shitfest of a game. Dying Light 2 was million times better than this shit.

tbh gaming industry as a whole is failing much like tech industry. They have buckled down too much to Corporate suites then relying on passionate and innovative people. A corporate only believes in financial growth and shareholders.
