Help i dropped my hard disk from only 1 feet height. it made a few noices when i switched in again but it worked. Now after 2 days it has stopped working. Its a 1TB WD external harddik which is very expensive at the moment and has data worth 800GB :( can it b repaired? i think it is a very slight problem as it worked for 2 days after it without any problem. shd i try the freezer trick or not? can anyone in lhr repair it?

External HDD are very delicate. Any kind of physical mishandling is dangerous. Freezer trick is risky too.

Try to run it again and make additional backup of the data. Writing on DVDs can be helpful if you do not have sufficient space on your primary HDD. Once you have done this, claim warranty (if applicable).

Otherwise, get it checked by an expert technician who has experience with external HDD related matters.

Your external Hard drive has been most probably permanently damaged from Inside i.e. either the disc is cracked up or the head has moved from its original retention place causing those clicking sounds. The freezer trick (always being unguarateed) is basically used on HDD's that are starting to fail by natural causes (wear and tear) whereas in your case, you've damaged it yourself so that wouldn't be a liable option.

And from what I understand repairing any hard drive is impossible except for where it came from (the company). As if right now, you should do two important things :
- See if you can backup information off your hard drive somehow by moving it in different positions while connected.
- Claim warranty if applicable, if not, wait for the prices to decrease till you can get a new HDD in a good price.

Usually clicking sound is a sign of mechanical failure. So probably your drive won't work. Your best shot would be to keep trying and backup your data if it does eventually.

how do i claim the warranty? is WD office available in pakistan?
In order to claim warranty :

- You need to have the warranty receipt (and written on it should be when the warranty expires)
- You can claim it from the shop where you bought it from.

Write an email to WD with all the detail's of your HDD and ask them about it. That's just the best way to know.

Yar i don't know for WD but for SEAGATE there is Marsons Corp USA in Karachi. There might be a similar firm who might handle this issue.
