MULTI Gaming Tournament In Medical College (Need Advice)

Hey PGers I want your help. I am Organizing a Video Games Tournament at my College. I have Asked the Administration of my college and they have agreed. This will be the first time this thing is going to happen at our College. I Have no Idea how to organize the tournament. I do know a dozen of my friends that are good gamers and willing to participate but I have little to no Idea to how the whole thing is going to come together.
This is where you guys come in. I want your Advice. Any body who has ever arranged a video gaming tournament in a college environment will be able to guide me in a better way I think...
OK about the systems, I would like to tell you that I have an Xbox 360 a PS3 and a mid-end gaming laptop. I have asked the college administration to provide the projectors for the tournament. So we will have that too. Apparently almost no one else has a current generation console in the whole college. Some people have good gaming PCs here. Also If I search a little more i might find a couple of PS2s and a PS3 from the other students I think. So there it is the whole Picture. Also I would like to say that the Aim of this Tournament is to provide a Good Entertaining show and develop interest of fellow students in this fantastic hobby that is Gaming.
Please your advise will mean allot to me. I Wish the tournament is a Success. As I had to go through allot in order to get Permission for this type of Activity in the college.

P.S. The Tournament can be or is most probably going to be a multi-day event. As we will have classes but some hours will be available for the tournament. Once again thanks for your advise!
P.P.S. We have Tekken players, Street fighter players, Need for Speed players, Counter Strike Players and Fifa players.. that i know of. Any other Games if competitive can be added or may be removed from the mentioned games as the games list and almost every thing else is yet to be decided.

Ive been part of gaming tournys back in the day... but only PC, havent heard of console based tourney being held in unis so no idea abt em.

anyways as far as PC gamin goes;

- decide wat games you want to play. that generally depends on system specs. Our Uni had a total of 30 PCs that coud run CS+Dota+NFS UG2 very well.

- do you know how many participants there are? We had a college wide registration (took 100rs each). NO outsiders allowed. tabulate how many participants for each game, thn there'll be entire sections that cn be dropped due to poor registration. dont want just 3 ppl playin Tekken tag and lookin like idiots would we??

- THE SETUP: THE most difficult part!!! as we had PC only and three seperate setups for CS/DOTA/NFS so we gave three days to 1) Installation 2) Setups and configuration of pings, joinin issues, firewall setups, IP assignments 3) last day for 2 hour trial matches b/w us organzers jst to test the whole setup!

- Zero hour: dont think k once ppl start playin its over! NO. your most diffucult part is the gaming day itself when there'll be nerds screaming curses @ eachotehrs like you've never seem em!! maintain Law & Order, have some senior faculty present as we had one or two incidents where players started to get physical w/ each.... Also if theres girls in your Gaming Tourney setup team its a pretty good idea to not let em come in the room, esp in CS (when your headshot by the same guy twice you just have to say something abt his momma dont you? )

- the setup in CS: most of the players were friends etc so we divided em in teams of 5 on 1stday, wining teams in elimination matches until final match between 2vs2 format.

- DOta: simple FFA setup as there wernt that many players.

- NFS: 3 modes Drag, Drift and 1 lap race. winner to stay format. 1vs1 matches.

- We had a two day event one time (at our own Uni) , then a three day-Inter University event that was held @ UIT (usaman Institute of Technology Karachi). That was something totally different w/ the information Minister coming and a whole reception and Awards ceremony and all....

As I said no idea abt organizing console centered tourney so ixnay on that....

Thanks Allot buddy. The need for speed idea is good. Not many FPS players I am afraid. Most are non gamers and well I think FPS will not be a "Good Show" for the Oblivious audience. I think we require some flash and some substance in an adequate proportion. Anyone else with any experience of Organizing some gaming event?

Never organized a gaming show before but have been to some.
The games which are the most known and popular among the students should be the ones in the tournament. Like ^ this guy said, during the heat of battle, players tend to get extremely angry and start abusing in the worst possible manner and can even start fighting each other so better keep the girls out and keep an eye out for the Hot heads, they always mess up. I can tell you from personal experience that hot heads are no good, after every death, head shot etc they abuse and some times even fight and ruin it for everybody.
Try to make the setup as best as you can because small problems can ruin the experience, check the connections to routers and power cables, keyboards, mouse, head phones etc should be working and chairs should be comfy (I once got a bad chair and lets just say it was not cool) and most importantly the games installed should be working fine with not errors and what not and just in case, keep the Cd's of the games there for easy repair.
Good thing you are doing, gaming should be experienced by a lot more people as it is simple GREAT (yr)
