if you actually saw any of those previous World Cups, you'd probably remember seeing how much their teams relied on them, and they duly delivered.... Argentina got out of the easiest group possible (barring the Belgium one) in uninspiring fashion, scored TWO goals in the Knockouts (one scored by Di Maria after Messi was fed the ball in the dying minutes by a tired defender, and the other a solo effort off a ricochet)..... Messi for Argentina was nowhere near what Rodriguez was for Colombia, what Teiger and Hummels were for Germany, and what Robben and Kuyt were for Netherlands.....

all the previous golden balls left you with this feeling that yeah, the award did go to the right man.... this time, not even close.... if they HAD to give it to an Argentinian, they probably should have given it to Mascherano or Di Maria, who were both the only two reasons Argentina got this far....
yar i don't get this one thing.... two faced people all around

kabhi Messi's argentina and than when it comes right down to it, argentina meaning messi was nothing without his team or messi didn't perform...

The simple fact IS argentina was IN THE FINALS without even losing a SINGLE MATCH so was GERMANY, now stats etc asides these two teams had this in common and both deserved to be in the finals THAT IS NO DOUBT

it was messi who scored in the earlier matches and made his team go ahead... messi wasn't trying to outshine anyone in his team... he was the captain and IMO he wanted everybody to shine in his team.. he DID not wanted it to be MESSI'S ARGENTINA instead ARGENTINA.

Plus did u see all the people even referres and goalkeepers from the other teams shaking hands with him inbetween games and being impressed by him etc.. can u show that kind of respect from anyone in the fifa 2014 worldcup ? i don't think so

respect aside he is a very VERY CLEAN player unlike other players... so all things contributed for this golden ball win... people can't just simple digest this trophy of his. people are like he made X number of goals or did that than messi but he got it, deal with it just like germany won, people deal with it

irrelevant post really.... at the end of the day, Messi didn't perform... he was, maybe, the fourth best performer for Argentina, behind Romero, Di Maria and Mascherano.... Argentina's Messi, Messi's Argentina, George ka Pakistan, Parvez ka Inglistan.... that shit doesn't matter

another moot point.... the golden ball goes to the best player, whether he be an individual, or a team player.... in either of those categories, Messi isn't even close to the top

:fp2: respect = best footballer now? ajao bhai maulana tariq jameel ko bhi golden ball de do, because he's respected around the world....

respect aside he is a very VERY CLEAN player unlike other players... so all things contributed for this golden ball win...
how, in the name of fuck, does being a clean player contribute to golden ball victory?? where are you even bringing this stuff from? Zidane got a red in the final and got the golden ball in '06 .... was it because he was clean as fuck? or was it because he OWNED midfield in every game?

deal with it just like germany won, people deal with it
the underlying fact being that Germany actually deserved it's victory.... unlike Lionel "Baazigar" Messi

Again, ur just comparing him in one match at the finals....

so mascherano should had got it or di maria as someone said earlier LOL

maulana tariq jameel kahan say agaya !!! i was just laying a point... agar hay tou bata do

haha that's my point, look at the picture i posted in the previous page, he even though got RED CARD got the golden ball award, coz everyone respected him and even had less goals than messi 3 > 4 ? haha

the underlying fact being that Germany actually deserved it's victory.... unlike Lionel "Baazigar" Messi

Argentina deserved its victory as much as germany d00d.... that last fluke from goetze LOL was a argentine defense miscalculation and sabella's poor choice of bringing back lavezzi to bench, it just wasn't aguero's Match ! lavezzi was such a good support to messi IMO

Give the Golden Ball to the most respected player. Ignore the best player in the tournament. :fp2:
Even Maradona and the much maligned Blatter think otherwise.

i think the same is true, atleast in some regard, for the opposite.... you see the physicality of that era, and the bad pitches.... I was discussing with a few friends about the "beautiful defending" and how Thiago Silva is probably the last defender left in that category... what actually ended that? it's the rise of the diving culture... defenders are scared to go in with the tackle now, because the attackers go down so easily....

in those old days, we saw defenders like Aldair and Maldini actually bullying attackers... would prima donnas like Ronaldo, Bale, and small players like Messi be able to ride those kinds of challenges? and so much of the slick, fluid game nowadays depends on the quality of the turf.... the pitch in those older days used to be shit.... i doubt Messi would be able to glide through the midfield as he does today, through uneven grass, and puddles of mud....

at the end of the day, we can't really say things like "maybe it was easier then" because the game has become so different, i dont think any sort of comparison is valid any more

- - - Updated - - -

also the facilities available nowadays.... give players like josevio and pele the benefits of modern day facilities, and you don't know any more
We can take two thing away from this entire post.

Which is; It is stupid and pointless to compare two different eras of football. And it is unfair to try and judge the acehivements of Messi by comparing to football and footballers of a bygone era.

Which is partly what Behrox was saying to begin with.

The fact of the matter is we live in THIS era of football, and Messi is head and shoulders above any other footballer on the planet. That's all there really is to say on said subject.

yup, pretty much.... people keep Abuses will lead to baning about Maradona's shadow and shit like that, they seem hellbent on trying to somehow undermine what Messi has achieved in his career.... and trust me, that has never been my intention, contrary to what some people might believe....

but this year, and this tournament, a number of players were better than Messi... not to undermine what he has achieved over the years, Messi was, frankly, quite underwhelming this entire year.... not just the world cup

and just to clarify, i didnt read Behrox's post

Yes, personally my footballer of the tournament was James Rodriguez. Messi clearly looked like he didn't even want that trophy, and is on record saying that he didn't really care for the trophy, it didn't mean much to him.

Messi hasn't been great this past season, judging by his own standards, which are extremely high. He was out injured for varying spells, and was vomiting on the pitch during/after matches. He's just physically not right, and in this tournament it was very clear to see that he was running on empty.

maradona's being critcising his own national team since the beginning of fifa, sure he won them the worldcup but all in all i think maradona in his heart doesn't want messi to achieve what he did for argentina back in the days... in all sense i think messi has already has surpassed maradona in more than one way but just because he hasn't yet won a worldcup yet which was my only wish for him and to put all rumour's aside i wanted him to win not that i dissed germany or not coz in all other matches i was with germany, sure they are a big and tactical TEAM and their matches were top notch, portugal destroyed, france thrashed and brazil LOL i don't wanna say haha and all those matches they won without a single goal towards them, definately the best team in the tournament BUT with argentina u could clearly see they did struggle. up until the last moment of extra time they couldn't goal..... strong competition none the less.... in all honesty it could had been anyone's game...

also about maradona, khud bara doodh mein dhula hay LOL sure he is a legend and this shadow of maradona on messi i wanted to once and for all cast aside which is really making other's ruin all of messi's other achievements....messi had all the pressure on him in this WC, the shadow of maradona, the pressure of being the captain and the entire nation's dreams on him alone... quite something to check aswell...

just coz of this one WC im afraid his entire legacy people might remember him for this... i'm NOT though

personally, i think FIFA waited until the last possible moment to make the decision... im fairly certain that had Argentina won the world cup, some german player would have been given the golden ball.... FIFA gave it away as a consolation prize, instead of actually giving it to the best player of the tournament.... some further weight to this argument is Blatter's statement that he was "surprised" when Messi stepped up to take the Golden Ball.... surely the President of FIFA would have known, had any decision been made prior to the final?

It seems it was a great party! Well done, Germany, you deserved to win, you were by far the best team at the World Cup. I love these guys so much, they always give their best on the pitch and come across as very nice and witty in their interviews. And I must add they're all very good looking, especially Mats Hummels (While Celebration in Berlin)

It's quite obvious that Messi getting the Golden Ball was a bit surprising and odd too. No doubt he scored the winning goals in group stages but you can't award him with Golden Ball only for that . Most of the time he was kept quite in the tournament and at the end of the round 1 of group stages , he was the only player who was dispossessed the most in the entire tournament despite of scoring the late winner in the game . The likes of Robben and James were better performer and helped the team in opening up the game . Robben was single handily leading the Holland attack and scored the goals too , same thing was with James . Even the commentator and pundits of Sky Sports were surprised when they saw award is giving to whom ...

lol nope
There were other more deserving players imo
That comment was not based on his performance in a single game, at one tournamet, or for performances over the last 6 months.

Some of us actuallly have long term memories, and the quality and consistency of his performances over the last 5 years is beyond question. As is his status as the best player.

I don't even understand why anyone even bothers to listen to Maradona. He should just shut up and go back to doing cocaine, if he hasn't already.

My comment wasnt made based on his performance in WC alone either. Just like you, there are others who do watch football. I was talking about throughout his career, an amazingly brilliant player 'Yes', but the best player..debatable

Even the goddamn zombies don't behave like proper zombies. They're all fast & intelligent unlike how zombies are supposed to be like. Any fan of "zombie" genre cannot possibly like this shitfest of a game. Dying Light 2 was million times better than this shit.
