So, used the gold variant of the phone for a bit, overall its good for the price, the camera is more on the average side, can't compete with something like infinix zero 3, I own multiple infinix devices, the overall build quality is average at best, the back side is plastic, the glass on front is curved a small bit, the screen is not, the UI is very close to stock android, I don't think it will see many updates. Honestly speaking, the infinix phones seem more polished overall.
Also, the after sale service of infinix is quite good, got my phone fixed multiple times, people at their carlcare service centers are very helpful.

What were the issues that required fixing? I'm wondering if they were manufacturing defects/etc?
phones developed some small issues due to rough usage, not manufacturing faults or anything. Have been using Chinese smartphones as secondary phones for quite a while, infinix ones turned out quite well. Build quality is good, battery life is still the same as the first day, performance is acceptable as well.

How rough was your usage? Are we talking cell phone dropping off a table, kind of rough?

As for the chinese smartphones comment, aren't all smartphones with the exception of Samsung made in China?

Multiple drops, not talking about the mainstream Chinese brands, used mostly uncommon brands.

Could you identify the company names? It would be good to have this info.
I have tried Meizu, doogee and inew phones in the past, also had a innjoo phone, not sure where innjoo is manufactured though
