Iam building a gaming pc on a budget, so i considered two processors core i7 3rd gen & Xeon. I7 goes around for 7-8k used and on the other hand xeon for 5-6k but somewhere on internet i found out that it requires its own ECC Ram which is also expensive moreover iam not sure that it also requires a different mobo. So if anybody has had experience with xeon kindly help me. My mobo supports upto 3rd gen processors and socket is LGA1155 and please also suggest that i should simply go with i7 and skip xeon altogether. Please suggest. Thanks

Where are you getting a core i7 for 7-8k? I'm not even sure you can buy a 2nd gen i7 at that price. If you're really getting it at that price then you should buy it & ignore xeon altogether, even if you're saving 2-3k on it.
Getting back on the track, I'm using a xeon 1240v2 & as far as I know I'm using normal ram without any issue. As for the performance, I still think a core i5 3rd gen would perform equally in games.

on Aliexpress you can get xeons for dirt cheap. I bought one for my pc for 2.5k. you can check the processor specs whether it requires ECC memory or not. most dont.
