Have put in almost 3 hours in the beta and I just can't get enough of this game! There's only one mission in the Alpha version which takes max 30 mins to finish but the area that is available to explore is 3 times the size of the mission area.

Impressions:
- The game looks ABSOLUTELY gorgeous, the art and the setting of this game is a breath of fresh air.
- The universe seems pretty amazing, not quit on the scale of the mass effect universe, that is, judging by this short Alpha version.
- It has its similarities with Mass Effect, we have The Tower which serves the same purpose as the Citadel and we have a shield that replenishes but the health does not.
- The Tower is fully unlocked in this Alpha version, and serves as a home base. Viewing messages, buying guns, bounty contracts, gunsmiths, gear, inventory and the usual shit you find in your home base, quite similar to the Citadel.
- The game play is very seamless, its not like Halo nor like COD, it has somewhat a heavy feel to it, which personally I love.
- One of the most awesome parts is the customization and upgrade system, there is a lot to do here, from choosing your armor, which effects your abilities and attributes, to power upgrades to the use of the inventory.

Online Aspects:
- The public events are just awesome, you're minding your own business and doing your missions and on the way to the next objective you see 6 guys fighting a giant alien, you just can't resist but join in. Although you can just walk past the action and continue your mission.
- I saw people while doing the missions that would just randomly appear in the game minding there own business.
- I'm expecting a fully connected universe in the final game, like other players on The Tower buying stuff and upgrading their gear, would be just awesome.

PS: The menu and how to use it is quite different, there's a pointer that you move with the analogue stick, and its quite easy to use, user friendly and refreshing.

CAN'T FREAKING WAIT FOR THIS GAME.

so its like 1080p 30fps on PS4? or the alpha running on a lower setting?
What lower setting? The game isn't even on PC. :p

It looks great visually but mainly because of the art style. The graphics are not good but the art style is absolutely FANTASTIC. One of the best in any FPS that I have seen. Sadly, the game is just what has been described so far, Borderlands 2 meets Halo. I played a couple of missions and was bored in singple player. I hope the multiplayer portion with friends is much better, and it should be, just like Borderlands 2.

Single player is much like Borderlands 2, which is best experienced in co-op. Bungie in their latest vidoc stresses on this point too, "game is designed around co-op" or something.

This is why I asked people to try the PvP & not go for the PvE yet. But everyone seems to be interested in its looks it seems, lol. The PvP looks very addicting to me (from what I have seen on twitch.tv) Everyone should try it.

No I meant it should be rough around the edges since its an alpha.

I agree abt the graphics part. It doesn't look like the game is utilizing the next-gen power but I guess its suppose to be like that since its somewhat of a MMO.

Nice post.

I just wanted to add that there's not just one mission in this alpha. There are multiple. Some open up for you after you reach a certain level, while others are loot-hoarding side-missions where you have to "explore" a cave or kill a boss or retrieve something. There's lots to do in this alpha.

There's also the whole strike mission of "The Devil's Lair" that was actually shown in an official gameplay trailer released by Bungie.

EDIT:

Watching a stream right now and just realized there's also the mission that was shown in last year's E3! Damn I seemed to have missed that one too :/

Didn't know level increase unlocks extra missions. Managed to almost reach level 6, but no missions popped up. Time for another play session then!

@Taha Ahmed, have you tried the PvP yet?

Also, look up the internetz on how, when & where all the missions are unlocked.

Yes I have played it, and its really fun. The best part, your multiplayer and singleplayer progression is the same and carries over.

Although I have played just a couple of matches, the overall connection was amazing, I didn't feel any difference in the performance compared to SP.

There is just a domination type game mode unlocked in the Alpha. Nothing new in that respect, capture the flags, whoever has the higher score wins. I think there is no score limit just a timer, or maybe we hadn't reached it.

You can use all the abilities acquired in the SP while playing in the MP, so makes for a very diverse play through. Can't expect the enemy to only do what you can do.

Hopefully will play more tonight, I've probably missed alot.

Missions don't "pop up" just like that. They are either accessed from the director menu while some are unlocked by bounties present in the tower. Or "green" beacons scattered throughout Old Russia.

Apologies for the delay in impressions. I'd been TOTALLY busy till 2AM last night following my playthrough of the game. And since this morning my internet has been really spotty. Anyway, here goes.

First and foremost, for a game that is spread across generations and 4 different consoles, and still being in alpha state, it looks absolutely mind blowing and runs really smooth. The art-direction, as stated everywhere else and evident from the screenshots posted previously, is out of this world. I really must force this point that these screenshots don't do justice. You really have to BE in that wide open space, alone, with snow blowing across your face, and the clouds drifting slowly above, and the low ambient music playing in the background to really appreciate what's going on. Basically $30 of every unit sold is going to go to the art/tech department.

My time in Old Russia:

  • As the alpha starts, you're immediately thrown into Old russia. It seems like a mission is already underway and you have to traverse the landscape towards an industrial looking building in the distance. Along the way you encounter small pockets of enemies. Here's where I immediately felt something familiar - Halo.

  • But it's not exactly a ditto copy. It's more in-spirit. The way enemies don't only hide behind a corner and only pop their heads at you (hello cod). They run around, jump over obstacles, flank, run back to regroup, and the way their mood changes when you're down on health. It's all very familiar and so much more fun!

  • Not only the enemies, but the shooting as well felt tight and responsive. Though it's a bit "heavy" now, but clearly not as heavy as killzone. Far from it. For me, it didn't even take a learning curve to figure out how to shoot. The experience felt like an extension of a game I had already been playing for a long time. And while everything felt familiar, it was still new and exciting and certainly has a LOT of possibilities that I don't fully understand. Even now, looking at some of the streams, I'm finding new ways to play and shoot and I couldn't be more excited about the potential. And my next point connects perfectly with this point.

  • Exploration. It's HUGE. There is potential brimming through the edges of this game. From where I started, I was in a huge field with small hills and high mountains. The ground was covered with hundreds of years of human technology; rusted and destroyed. After I had completed the first mission, I decided to dedicate the most amount of my time to see how huge this space is. I went from small passage ways surrounded by huge mountains, to underground tunnels where great horror lived, to industrial looking buildings which lead me deeper into tight quarters of Old russia and then out into huge spaces where I could run around in my vehicle. All while encountering pockets of enemies. I can't put into words how beautiful this whole experience was. Because not only is the playspace huge, it's RICH. Rich with history, destroyed technology of all shapes and sizes. Even in the open spaces, you are rarely running around flat grounds with flat textures and nothing to immerse you into the world. It's just so damn fucking rich! And the richness isn't only restricted to this. There are a moment when I came across 2 enemy factions (the only 2 present in the alpha) who were already engaged with each other. It was beautiful to see this moment. It drove home the point of a 'persistent world' that's alive and weird things are happening all the time!

Now the PvP:

  • Only played 2 matches. First had decent connection, the second one had an atrocious one. I realized the netcode being used here is reminiscent of killzone 2; You can put shots into someone and be sure that they will receive the damage, or die, even if they go behind a wall. This makes it fairer for people with high pings who are not able to perform well in other shooters.

  • Both matches were played in 2 different maps. The first one was on the moon and it was a BLAST to play since I repeatedly got access to vehicles - And they are cool as fuck. The gifs below describe them perfectly. The first one is bulky and heavy and first missile projectiles that kill in one hit. The second is my favorite. It's extremely nimble and JUST DRIVING IT is satisfying!

Overall I'm impressed with the MP but want to play more of it before I can form a decent opinion. PvP is very hard to judge from such a short experience.

Overall:

The game is fun. Pure fun. People who are playing this are repeatedly saying that 5/6 hours go by and they keep on stumbling into cool things that capture their attention. Same happened with me. I just couldn't get enough of the exploring bits. The world. The shooting and everything. There was one moment where a player dropped into the game when I was simply walking around on my own and that was really special. I saw his gamertag in the distance and rushed to see what he was doing. We both teamed up for a little while, drove around and killed random enemies that came up. I just can't wait to have this happen to me more and more in the final game.

There's just so much to be said about this. I even missed commenting on the impeccable sound design, the awesome music and the tower. And those 7/8 times where I literally threw my hands up in joy when I pulled off something amazing. It has been a LONG LONG time since that happened.

This. I really liked that in Killzone Mercenary, awesomeness!

What class have you chosen? Hunter, Warlock? Try sniping on the moon map in PvP. Those headshots, so satisfying.
