I really dont think its windows thats causing the problem.. if it was windows, it would be some kind of an error like some DLL is missing, or the DLL is outdated, etc..

here's what I have to say:

First of all, download a graphics benchmarking software, and test your graphics card strength with that... Download 3D Mark 2007 and run its tests... if the tests pass, and the system does NOT crash/freeze, I think its safe to say that your hardware can handle the load...by hardware, I mean your graphics card, the CPU, RAM, everthing... In this case, maybe the cause is a corrupt installation of COD4... try uninstalling the game, and then get another copy of the game, and install from that... this might solve the problem..

also, does this happen in other latest games too... if not, then most probably your hardware is fine, and the problem lies in the COD4 installation itself..

But if your computer DOES crash/freeze in the 3D Mark tests, and/or in other games, it probably means that there is some hardware problem... In this case, I would suggest that you download some temperature/clock monitoring software like RivaTuner or Motherboard Monitor or Everest Ultimate, and have that logging the temperatures/clocks of all the components in your PC, which you play a game... then study these graphs afterwards, to see if something heats up while you play a game...

hope this helps you out :) ...

^^^ This could be a potential reason too.... monitor the rail voltages in RivaTuner/Motherboard Monitor while playing a game, and see which voltage drops, if any .... maybe post the resulting graphs screenshots here for everyone to see..

I had the same problem while playing online, but thats only when it happened, never happened in singleplayer, but then again I don't have the best GPU.

I wasn't able to get it fixed, I just stopped playing online (yeah, you'd want to kill me don't you? :p).

I don't know what to advice here....reinstall the game, get latest DX9 drivers, and GPU/mobo etc drivers....
