Aoa,

I'am currently building a new rendering/gaming rig. I'm stuck on choosing a GPU which suits my needs. I've shortlisted the GTX 780Ti and the 980. These both have similar performance in games from what I've read. I wanted to know which would be better for 3D rendering. The 780ti has more cuda cores than the 980, but the 980 has 4GB of RAM. Render times and quality is my target.

Quadro is much better than these gpu's for 3d rendering...

and what type of project you require it, arch visualization or 3d modeling...

I'll mostly do GPU rendering of 3D models. The quadro cards are faster in viewport performance of 3DS MAX which I use as a primary render software along with Vray. The GTX cards are much faster in the actual rendering. Plus this build is a multi-purpose one, I'll also be doing 1080p or 1440p gaming on it.

The 980 is certainly a much efficient card but I was wondering how the faster 2048 cuda cores would compare to the slower 2880 cuda cores of the 780ti specifically in 3DS and Rhinoceros. Both with Vray plugins.

I found a good deal on a 980 which is a reference model. Now I know that the custom designs get much lower temperatures and are less noisy, but working with a tight budget and a difference of around 15K, should I get the reference?

get the reference one....just keep ur case air flow optimal and u will be good as 980 is a cool card....
since reference design card uses less voltage than custom designed & overclocked ones it generates less heat too

Well the case that I'll be using is a Carbide 330R, unless if I find the 600T for a good price. I've read some reviews and people say that the reference design will run really hot when doing rendering around 85 C. On games it's acceptable.

I'am going to use Rhinoceros and 3DS MAX, both with vray. I've read on reviews that the 970 has a much better value to performance ratio in games and in 3D over the 980. The stock cooler will run very hot and I know that these cards can handle over 90C with no problem, I don't want to shorten the life of the card.

I'am saving up some more for a 980. I don't want to get a reference one as it will run very hot and I don't want that. I'll search for one with a custom cooler.
