So my i7-4790 based PC is up for sale since I've an upgrade planned soon, I'll call the new baby "BeastMode".

UPDATE (31 aug 2016)

My final parts list. I ended up going the x99 routes since I can use the more cores for Work/Productivity. I've purchased all the parts. Waiting for them to arrive so I can assemble. The mother board / ram / case have already reached! This wait is tough!

(I got the Monitors, WD Black HDD earlier this year so they'll be part of the new build along with the 850 EVO. Rest all is new)

OLD POST:

My dilemma is deciding whether to go the 6700K route (new motherboard / ram / everything almost besides HDDs)

OR

the x99 route with a 6850k or possibly 6900k.

More cores will help since its my workstation and in the long term they'll pay off for themselves but on the other hand I'm thinking 6700k since its $300 cheaper (compared to a $620 i7 6850k) --and a slightly higher clock on the 6700k means better emulation speeds e.g. comparing the emulation benchmarks for the 6850k , they show 6700k being significantly faster since the single threaded performance matters more in that case.

On the other hand, the 6850k isn't at a big disadvantage in general PC gaming .. the FPS are off by like 0.5-2% which doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, considering both can run any game at 60+ FPS as long as the GPU doesn't bottle neck and this is where the extra cores advantage will matter when then comparing the two CPUs for office work / workstation reasons. Can't ignore the 50% more cores xD

What do you guys think is a better path? 6700k or the 6580k based on the above thought process of mine I explained.??

For now, the items I've collected so far include:

GPU: (acquired) GTX 1080 FTW
CPU Cooler: (acquired) Noctua NH-D15 Noctua NH-D15 SSO2 D-Type Premium CPU Cooler, NF-A15 x 2 PWM Fans - Newegg.com
Mother board: (not decided yet), most probably the Asus X99 A-II if I got the 6850k route since the mobo just came out. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F854XAY/ OR this Asus Z170 Deluxe if choosing the 6700k >> https://www.amazon.com/dp/B012NH0SL8/ (5x USB 3.1 ports and USB C? mmmmm, delicious.)
Ram: (acquired) Corsair Vengeance 2x 16GB DDR4 at 3000MHZ C15 - will barely fit in with the bigDaddy cpu cooler above xD but he's the star of the show for how silent he is so everyone else has to compromise
Power Supply: (acquired) EVGA superNova G2 650watts 80+gold EVGA - Products - EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2 Power Supply - 220-G2-0650-Y1
CPU: (not decided yet, the toughest decision of all!)
Case: most probably the NZXT h440 but its outta stock in black and I'm not really keen on the white color. I'm open to ideas if you guys like something better
Case fans: I already acquired some super awesome Noctua fans and plan on getting some more to make up for a sound dampened air tight case if the h440 doesn't work out.

Possible Toppings:

The 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 drive https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-950-PRO-Internal-MZ-V5P512BW/dp/B01639694M/
Although my 850 EVO has been serving me well and there isn't big need for speed or space at this stage but the new boards coming with an M2 slot that seems unwilling to stay alone.

I'll update as I think of more parts / ideas. Comment on what you think needs to be added / changed.

thanks

NVME 2.0 512gb ssd would be an amazing experience ... i have its same version in my macbook pro n things r simply blazing fast at 1500mb/s write n 1800mb/sec read ... im sure on a desktop read writes will be slightly better utilizing full bandwidth of pci-e
if u can afford x99 setup i would recommend it over z170 but the difference in gaming is not there ... in certain apps extra physical cores do matter
but i see from another thread u have already got 6700k setup ...

@Shavaiz

I got the PSU from the US.

I wanted the H440 but couldn't wait long so went with an Obsidian 650D Airflow case.
@mac007, thanks bro :)
@opethian

Thats what actually I ended up doing. I got an i7 6850k , I'm thinking about an NVME drive but my 850 EVO 512 gigs still is more than half empty after close to 2 years of use and is working great as my Boot / apps drive. I think I'll hold off on that for a while since most of my build I've resisted spending more (e.g. i went with 32 gigs ram vs 64 gigs .. single 1080 ftw vs SLI xD)

Here's the final parts list. All the parts have been purchased but I still have to wait a few days as some are in other cities for now :D
