God knows you made it more complicated and perplexed.
Lets suppose there is no character of 2nd Shopkeeper, then loss should be Rs.1000 i.e grossy of 200 and cash return of 800 in lieu of fake note of 1000
Is not it ? How do you say 800 loss ? Bhai 200 ki grossary le gai woh bhi loss hoowa, aur 800 net cash bhi le gai woh bhi loss hoowa.

2nd part of your answer is 200% wrong.
Bhai jaan mein yehi to keh raha hun. Agar 2nd shopkeeper ka character nhn hota to net loss 1k hota. But because there was a 2nd shopkeeper and 1st one exchanged the counterfeit note with the 2nd one hence he now has to pay the 2nd shopkeeper too.

Ahan.... tumne 2 martaba 1st shopkeeper ke paise kaat lie is theory se :D
Care to explain?

(1) winner.... !

Not at All. Guys make me few things understand :

1. Aap ne Pocket se 1000 Ka Note Nikala aur woh Jehli Nikla. Loss ? Obviously 1K.
2. Aap ne woh note muje de kar change le li. Aapka loss khatam. Mera Loss 1K. Is not it ?
3. Muje Pata Chala to Main ne Kaha note change karo. I got the real note and again its your loss of 1K

While giving 800 back to Girl, shopkeeper kept 200 real cash as price of that grossory. So that is not loss, that is simple sale of 200.

The answer is Rs 1200
The girls buys the item of worth 200rs
The Girl gives fake 1000rs
The 2nd shop keeper gives 1000 Rs worth real notes to the 1st shop keeper
1st shop keeper gives Real 800rs to the girl and Keeps Real 200rs with himself
At the moment the 1st shop Keeper has Real 200rs
2nd Shop Keeper complains about the fake note
The first shop keeper gives Rs 200rs(The he just earned) + Real 800rs from his own pocket
Total loss for the 1st shop keeper is Rs 1000.
Now he also basically gave away an item worth Rs 200 for free.
Therefore Rs 1000+ Rs 200 = 1200 total loss suffered by the 1st shop keeper :wink2:
I can't explain it any better.

Piyare Bhai Note 1000 Ka Jehli Nikla, to Loss 1200 Ka Kaise ?
1st Shopkeer did received price of grossry he sold (Rs.200). I think its sale, not loss. What do you think ?

DUUUUUUUUUDE! Why are you guys making it so complicated!!

He lost 1000 to the girl with the counterfeit money. (800 + 200 which was the cost of the groceries)

And he also had to shell out 1000 rupees to the second shopkeeper.

Is that not it?

KDKhan keeps saying that the 800 rupees he gave the girl were not his. Look at it like this:

1st shopkeeper had 10,000 rupees in his drawer. The girl gives him 1000 fake rupees. He gives them to a 2nd shopkeeper and gets 1000 real rupees. Now he has 11,000 rupees. He then gives the girl 800 rupees and she also takes the groceries worth 200 rupees. 1st shopkeeper now has 10,200 rupees. 2nd shopkeeper comes and demands his money back because the 1000 rupees note was fake. The 1st shopkeeper gives the second shopkeeper 1000 real rupees. The 1st shopkeeper now has 9,200 rupees. Now, the shopkeeper has 800 rupees less than he had in the beginning, and he has also lost merchandise worth 200 rupees.

1st shopkeeper's Initial money= 10,000
1st shopkeeper's Final money= 9,200
Loss= 10,000 - 9,200 = 800 rupees.
Total loss= 800 + 200 (cost of unpaid-for-groceries) = 1000 rupees.

Correct away.

He got Rs.1000 from the 2nd shopkeeper(in return for something worth zero) and he returned his Rs.1000 back after he identified that it is counterfeit, therefore dealing with the 2nd Shopkeeper, the 1st Shopkeeper had no profit no loss. However, he gave Rs.800 to the buyer which is his loss.
Total loss=Rs.800

Let's just assume that the note the was in fact real. The 1st shopkeeper keeps 200 and gives 800 to the lady and the 2nd shopkeeper has his 1000 as well. Everyone's happy. Now those of you saying that the loss is 2000, can you please tell how much is loss of the 1st shopkeeper in this situation ? Loss = 0, right ?

Now, the 2nd shopkeeper realizes that the note is fake. So the 1st shopkeeper pays him 1000. Loss = 1000.

Clear enough ?

Actually character of 2nd Shopkeeper has been incorporated just to make the things perplexed. Otherwise, woh chalak larki 1000 ka jehli note de kar 200 ki grossry le gai aur 800 ki cash as "baqaya" le gai. Total loss 1K.

Wow, reading all those replies got me so confused I actually had to rethink this from scratch. So here's my analysis:

Suppose that before the woman came to the shopkeeper, he had Rs.2000 in his pocket and an item worth Rs.200. So in total he had assets worth Rs.2200. After the fraud, he lost that item, but retained Rs.200 of the cash and he'll have to pay Rs.1000 back to the other shopkeeper. So at the end of the day he'll have Rs.1200 with him, and he'll have lost that that item. Hence, TOTAL LOSS = 1,000.

WHY EVERYONE WHO'S SAYING 1,800 OR 2,000 IS WRONG:
You're counting the Rs.800 he lost to the woman twice. When he had the money broken and gave the change to the girl, he actually just transferred his loss to the other shopkeeper and later on that other shopkeeper came back merely to reclaim his original amount. Here's another way to view it: if the shopkeeper did lose 1.8k or 2k, then obviously the other two parties involved (the girl and the other shopkeeper) must have gained a total of 1.8k or 2k (because obviously the money the shopkeeper lost didn't disappear into thin air). However, the fraud girl only gained Rs.800 in cash, and an item worth Rs.200, whereas the other shopkeeper didn't gain or lose anything, he just reclaimed his original amount.

So if you use the money gained = money lost logic, you'll also arrive at the solution that the shopkeeper just lost Rs.1000

I hope everyone understands this now.
