You can send digital audio through the HDMI port OR the SPDIF port on the PS3.
If you're using the HDMI for audio as well, then the Audio Receiver MUST have HDMI inputs where the video part is passed through to the HDMI out on the receiver and audio part is processed and output through the speakers. If you're using the SPDIF port, then there's no hassle. The AV Receiver should only have an SPDIF input port for digital audio.
