Digital Foundry recommends raw native 4K/30 mode over checkerboarded performance mode on PS5.

While 60fps may seem like the obvious choice bearing in mind the 2160p vs 1800p checkerboard difference, it's actually the case that the graphical quality is far richer in the 30fps mode as a result of this clarity. Both myself and Rich Leadbetter (who also played the game) opted to play at 30fps.

base PS4 and Pro feature a substantially pared back visual experience, running at dynamic 1080p on the standard PS4 and a dynamic 1800p checkerboard on Pro, both operating at 30fps. Meanwhile, the PS5 feature-set is run at native 4K in its 30fps favour resolution mode, dropping to checkerboarded 1800p at 60fps in the favour performance mode

Game was clearly built for PS5 first and then scaled back on last gen, rather than the other way around.

I mean, duh, its still cross gen. But this is more like Forza Horizon 5 where the detail and assets are built for current gen first. The tree and foliage in the example above, is massively dialed back in detail and is missing some assets and lighting completely.

Coincidentally, both Forza Horizon 5 and Forbidden West are making a case of native 4K pixel counts being preferable to checkerboarding (1800p at that) when the option is available. Even at the expense of frame rate

Its 1800p checkerboarded, so the actually resolution is lower than Zero Dawn's 2160p checkerboarded. The additional upscaling on a 4K display is going to negatively affect detail and clarity.

2160p CBR is slightly above 1500p in terms of actual pixel count. 1800p CBR would be somewhere between 1200-1300p. Even lower at times, since dynamic res is in place.

The game is largely gpu bound due to it being cross-gen and making heavy use of async compute.

The quality of side quests has increased, too, even though it's still not up to the gold standard of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt.

In that respect, it reminds me of The Witcher III. Side quests don’t feel inherently “less” than the ones from the main story. The side missions expand on the world and characters, often ones the main scenario introduces you.

Given the complaints levelled against Zero Dawn, Guerrilla have clearly looked to the likes of The Witcher 3 for inspiration and so side missions are frequently just as long and uniquely designed as the story ones.
