I wanna give up.

I have spoken to over two DOZEN people from PTCL and not a single person has any fucking idea what FAST PATH is. Un-fucking-believable.
I got my changed to fast path when i was on adsl. I used to message ptclcares daily and eventually they did change it. Reduced my pings up to 15 ms to every region. Pings were sweet. DXB used to be around 35, sgp 81, europe 145. Good times.

Sorry bro i think you misunderstoood me. I'm just a viewer not a streamer. Are twitch streams lagging for you or anyone and not running at a high bitrate (as a viewer)?

Got it bro. Yes thats what i said to them. I will pay them once they have coverage in my area. Saddar is very near to my place. I am in Lalkurti. What software are you using.. Inbox me. I will help. I m a streamer too.

Then this is definitely some weird throttling by ptcl. Speed tests are showing normal speed. Youtube is streaming fine at 1080p. Why just twitch?

Edit: I can literally stream youtube at 4k, but twitch is streaming at 160p? LuL?

Was talking to a friend just yesterday and he said he hasn't been able to watch Twitch streams for the past few days. He's on 50 Mbps GPON.

I don't watch Twitch streams but stuff like Instagram and WhatsApp are acting funny for me. Take ages to load photos and send messages. Also been happening for the past few days.

PTCL VDSL 10mb dead browsing and streaming

Hello everyone,

Faisal here. Need some help here regarding my PTCL DSL connection. I am using 10mb VDSL here in Peshawar. It's all newly upgraded to fiber connection right up to the MSAG device which is I guess within a 1 km radius of my house here in Hayatabad Peshawar. The thing is, I am having a strange issue. The speedtest shows the downstream speed at around 9.5mb and upstream at ~2.5-3mb which is correct for my connection. But in practical use, the internet seems to be totally crippled. Browsing is dead slow, websites loading speed is dead, download itself peaks at around 1-2mb at max, mobile apps such facebook and others take ages to load pictures and comments and profiles, streaming is totally hopeless needless to say. And this is not on one specific device, at least 5 smartphone and 2-3 laptops so the issue is with the connection.

I first had the normal ADSL, then I went to my local exchange and they upon my feedback changed it to VDSL (also the new modem) in the hopes that everything would get rectified, but it did not. Complaining to them any further is useless because they don't understand this and only check the speed which is good enough. The lines parameters, SNR and attenuation also look fine. I landed here searching for this issue online. Please help me. I am getting frustrated over this. :flame:

Why don't you first try Google DNS or the more recent Cloudflare DNS (8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 respectively.) on your laptop or pc and see if that improves anything. If it does, You can just change the DNS in your ptcl router so it affects all the devices in your house instead of you having to manually change the DNS in each separate device by hand.

Apart from that, It would seem that your exchange can't handle all the bandwidth load and has throttled some sites OR Because of the high load the local DNS that ptcl provides is dead slow. Do note changing your DNS will mostly affect the speed at which your websites load, The other stuff may or may not still remain. I think It's just ptcl throttling it's users because they can't handle the bandwidth demands.

Could be something else though.

P.S:
I don't see the parameter pics.
Also, Did this issue came up recently? If you read the previous comments on this thread you'll see other people are experiencing the same thing. Could be an issue from the backend or only in some areas.

Hi, thanks for replying. I forgot to mention in my previous post that I did try changing the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 but the response overall is the same. I haven't noticed any improvement. You could be right about PTCL throttling the B/W deliberately but one thing that's confusing me is the speedtest results, how all this data and speed flows in when in actual the real B/W is choked ? And I have tested this at different times os the day and night, it remains pretty constant, remains above ~8.5-9mb 95% of the day/night. How come the speedtest showing all those great speed results then ? I understand that they have assigned a pipe of 10mb to me but the speedtest measures the B/W at a given time and that shows it above 9mb !!! It's strange.

Here' the screen of the parameters again for your quick reference:

Can fast path be applied on a VDSL connection? The only downside of a VDSL connection is, it adds 15-20 ms more as compared to ADSL.
You could say there is something of sorts for VDSL like was with ADSL with Interleaving mode and FastPath mode but, I'd say it's generally not worth it to fiddle with since I couldn't find much clear info on the topic online. The only thing relating to Interleaving and Fastpath was this table I found which showed the different set "profiles" that could be used for different scenarios with varying max bandwidths, ds/us power and a couple of other things that I couldn't personally understand what those values meant or what they effected.

Regardless, There is no clear info on whether or not you can just outright disable "Interleaving" on VDSL and it seems while that you may be able to get PTCL to force on FastPath for your line... There is a reason why your line is on Interleaving in the first place.

Ptcl wouldn't even understand what comes out of your mouth in the first place.

Say, PTCL can't provide everyone enough bandwidth right. What do they do then? How do they throttle only some sites and not others? And how would this help them not having enough bandwidth?
Well, They could set up a QoS rule and set prioritize the link between you and their local speed test server, Perhaps all the local speed test servers. After that, they can set up another rule that sets some priority/limit to the popular sites (Let's say call this normal priority) and then any other remaining traffic that matches some criteria (P2P torrents, Youtube HD videos e.t.c) to an almost stop.

This is, of course, an example. PTCL could prioritize the traffic as they see fit or otherwise. Now with the 3 QoS rules above You'd be experiencing dead slow internet but, Do a speed test and you'll be getting normals speeds.

OR another thought just popped into my head. There could've been another cable cut since Local speeds seem to be fine.

Can't really say anything tbh. All of those are assumptions and I have no evidence or facts to prove it. Throttling is just one of many issues that could be the issue.

Do you only experience these slow speeds in your area?

P.S I again can't seem to see the picture. Maybe upload them to imagur and paste the link here?

I think this is definitely it. Coupled with what warpdrive and greayfreak are discussing above, I think it's safe to assume ptcl is either actively throttling bandwidth heavy websites like twitch, or they have defined QoS parameters resulting in normal speeds/results for youtube/speedtest.net etc, and trash choked service for the rest of the "unpopular" web.

Just for the sake of stats, could you try streaming something on twitch.tv and let us know the results? In terms of the stream quality it defaults you to?

I got your point. They must definitely be doing something of the sorts that you described above otherwise there is no logical explanation of the cyber misery that I am faced with. Even the trashy highly compressed whatsapp images of a few kb are taking ages to download. Nothing is stable. I feel cheated. Is there anything we can do to prove this to these crooks ? One of the fat guy from their team just lands over my house on a bike and shows with full confidence the speedtest results on his smartphone screen, his chest swollen with divine pride as if he was sent from heavens to let me know that PTCL is the best possible solution to all my woes in life. Can we really do something to get this resolved ? Maybe on a collective basis ?

PS. I have actually uploaded the picture on the imgur and have been inserting it here. Here's the link. See if you can have a look on imgur.

I'm on my phone and tried streaming 4 different Twitch streams through the browser (not the app), and all 4 started at 360p, and then automatically switched to the highest available quality on that stream.

Will check tomorrow to see if it's any different on my laptop.

Why you guys don't talk about the high speeds/gpon packages? Is it not widely available?

Same issue here, can't watch any stream. It starts buffering constantly every 3 secs, it's issue from PTCL only. I can watch on Zong 4G ETC.

First, Your line stats are perfectly fine and your sync speeds are okay.

Secondly, Well, That is the hard part. You'd have to do a lot of testing on your own as well as actually getting in contact with someone who'd understand all the "testing" you did. Otherwise, you'll get bamboozled by the ptcl guy every time as he doesn't really want to fix your issue at hand.

I've just checked twitch myself and there is indeed some bs stuff going on. First, I made sure no one was "Downloading a torrent on my internet" as I have DD-WRT on my router and I can monitor any bandwidth that goes through it (Spoiler Alert: My connection was idle). I proceed to open twitch and launching a stream and guess what... It didn't even play for a good 2 minutes and when I monitored my network usage it didn't cross 100kbit/s that is 0.1mbit. It sometimes spiked up to ~1500kbit or 1.5mbit and it was only for like 2-3 seconds allowing me to watch like, 5 seconds of the stream.

There you go. A real-world test that shows something is "Wrong". I could go through all the trouble and set up some "Synthetic" tests with flent and some other tools I may not know of right now. Testing each protocol with different loads. But alas, I don't have all that time or the expertise to go through all those test results even though running my own server or finding one is a whole another hassle. Not to mention the fact that again, I wouldn't get in contact with anyone who would understand the issue.

My advice, Start asking around in your local neighborhood and see if they're getting normal speeds. Ask your local friends to run a test or two. People on PG can start running tests once they make sure no one is using the internet and all other variables that could affect the test are dealt with (2.4ghz wifi sucks, as well as their line, could be bad .-.). After that, Go Tweet @ptclcares and explain with the pictures/videos/proof. I honestly don't think Swearing at them will do any help (They're probably used to it).

In reality, we have no ACTUAL way of just knowing if PTCL is throttling us or not. That is all I can say.

Now, I shall disappear from this forum and go back to lurking as I have exams and my "moodiness" wi be (hopefully) over tomorrow.

P.S
The time I spent to write this... The twitch stream was running in the background and guess what. The stream played for only 20 seconds. It's so bad that it doesn't even load.

P.P.S
I honestly hope all this is just some issue at the backend and it resolves itself in a day or tw... Make it a week or two instead.
