What should I upgrade?

Hey guys so currently my rig is i3 2120 + HD 7950.

Looking to upgrade to keep up with the technology. And so that the parts have a resale value.
Budget is around 10-15k plus whatever I could get by selling CPU/GPU

I wanted opinions on whether I should upgrade CPU or GPU? For GPU i had used Gtx 970 or 1060 3gb in mind considering my gpu sells around 17-18k (just a hunch)
For CPU I could get a 3rd gen chip only so that I don't need to change mobo (1155 chipset) or could look for a 4th gen mobo+cpu. Dunno if it will fall under 15k.

I would say go for GPU upgrade and try to get 1060.

Well, you definitely go with better GPU, and along with that, a better CPU as well. Core i3 might bottleneck after GPU upgrade in some games due to the limitation on core usage. So if you would upgrade your GPU then upgrade your CPU as well.
I think hd 7950 would go around 13-15K. Then add the budget for 1060 or 970. Additionally, 2nd generation or 3rd generation core i5 is equivalent to 6th generation i5, especially when the difference is unnoticeable, for any kind of gaming.

On the other hand, if you really wanna keep up with technology and updates, then you least should go with Skylake platform i.e. Core i5 6600K and compatible low end board. This is how you will jump.

What resolution are you playing on??
AMD 7950 is a marvelous card with one of the best overclocking capability.
Which model do you have and which cooler ? What clocks are you playing on ?
I feel your CPU needs an upgrade first followed by GPU. Overclock you GPU to see if it increases any performance. A regular 7950 will do 1100 Core speed with standard voltage. Its pretty easy though.

Hmm. I bought it used from someone here on PG. It's Sapphire already OC'ed to 925 Mhz. base one is around 800 i think?
That's what I was thinking as well should get an i5 3570 or something of the sort. Also any good shop in karachi where I can get new lga 1155 mobos? I think everybody keeps latest socket mobos. Haven't seen lga 1155 socket new mobo anywhere.

Upgrading to i5 3570 wont be helpful. It is also 4 generations old. You are better off waiting and getting an i3 of 8xxx series and a new Micro ATX motherboard.
Check Google for overclocking 7950. I remember a thread on Guru3d. You will be amazed. I had a stock 7950 with single fan which I have successfully benched at 1200 Core. 1100 is pretty much doable. Manually increase fan speed to 100% as a safety measure

8th gen would be too much xD will have to upgrade to ddr 4 rams too :(

Both. Get at-least i5 3rd generation (won't cost you much) and spend rest on whatever GPU you can afford.

So you will need motherboard upgrade too, then should go for 7th/8th generation i3 and keep the GPU.
