Nah, DF is wrong on this one. Its nowhere close to HBAO+. And PC version doesn't have the simple HBAO (since HBAO+ is superior in terms of fidelity and performance). Not sure how DF concluded that its HBAO. Maybe they will show proper comparisons on this in their full analysis.

I took a screenshot from my own game, and you can see the lack of AO coverage in the whole scene. House on the right at the back and the fences. The plank to his left looks like one flat plank on Pro 4K whereas with HBAO+ it has proper definition. The grass on the ground lacks depth as well.

Full DF analysis:

Digital Foundry: Witcher 3: PS4 Pro Analysis, PC Comparisons + Frame-Rate Tests!



Visuals:

- 2160p image achieved with Checker Board Rendering
- Technically rendering out 1920x2160 being checker boarded to a full 4K frame buffer
- Results slightly blurrier than native 4K but in still moments it creates a good illusion of native 4K.
- CDPR went past DF's expectations in results.
- If in-game motion blur is disabled, some CB artifacts can be observed, so recommended to keep it on.
- Super sampling for 1080p TV's confirmed again.
- Anti aliasing on foliage etc makes it much clearer over OG PS4.
- Ambient Occlusion upgraded from SSAO to PC's higher grade HBAO
- Texture filtering increased close to 16X AF.
- Draw distances and shadow quality remains the same.
- PC's Higher quality textures, higher shadow quality and Hair works are not included
- "Easily one of the better Pro upgrade I've covered"


Performance:

- Stress areas like croogback bog and alpha heavy cut-scenes run worse with the patch on Pro.
- Bog runs at around 25 FPS for stretches.
- But issue only arises in either intensive cut-scenes or the bog area.
- Alternatively in CPU heavy areas like Novigrad which has a lot of objects in a place, Pro runs at 30 FPS with OG dropping to 25 FPS.
- Much of the game is still 30 FPS with fewer streaming hiccups on the Pro.

The slowdowns on base PS4 in Novigrad don’t seem as low and for long stretches as the drops in Bog area on Pro. The Wild Hunt cut scene dropped to 21fps and was hovering around 25fps.

Even now DF doesnt seem aware of the fact that the higher grade AO on PC is infact HBAO+ not regular HBAO. The comparison I made with their own capture shows its nowhere close to being HBAO+.

Dire state of Pro patches and/or DF standard’s if this is one of the better ones. Their analysis are getting poor every year. The only thing DF can be counted on for are frame times graphs and pixel counting.

until the X patch comes out, we're getting the best console version. DF didn't cover this but on OG PS4 turning blur and motion blur off gives a 3~4 fps boost. I wonder if the same applies now to the Pro version, considering turning both blur's off reduces a bit of strain on the GPU.

I just hope to see better tech analysis than DF has been pouring out over the years. Their word is given alot of weight unfortunately but their work isnt upto par imo. The only excuse they ever have is “we are a small team” yet their analysis were better when they were smaller.

Motion blur doesnt have any noticeable impact on performance. Blur effects on the other hand does since it controls camera and object motion blur.

I actually disagree that Pro is the best console version, unless you are stuck with a 4K screen only. Base PS4 is overall much more consistent in performance and visuals since youre getting a sharp IQ at native 1080p.

Completely disagree with the bolded, having played both on the same 4K TV. The IQ difference makes a huge difference, though I played the game even before the boost mode firmware came out so I never played the game with the added CPU power.

I'm actually more interested in playing Blood and Wine because not only does it look and take place in a better location, it also uses CDPR's new renderer which is better optimized for consoles.

CDPR are already looking into it and considering their patching efforts, I'm hoping they'll be fixing or ironing out the performance issues sooner or later.

Blood and Wine improvements are engine enhancements which are applicable to the PC version too :p

Lets see how long it takes now to fix these issues on Pro.

Yeah I've been following that series since it started. Great stuff.

I never got to play the first Witcher game and considering the reviews and how different it is from even the 2nd game in terms of game play, I doubt I'll need to jump in. Witcher 3, especially the complete package, is a great package.

Also, I loaded my completely finished save in Blood and Wine to just run around with the new patch. It looks *really* good and clean. The IQ benefits a lot from the higher resolution and better AA. The foliage, in motion, doesn't look as bad as it does in some of DF's still screen shots, but it's understandable, the patch was a 100MB executable, they didn't add any extra textures.

Enchanced Edition is sitting at 86 though (thats higher than any Yakuza game ever released :p). Jokes aside, alot of people consider Witcher 1 to have the best story amongst all three. It hasn't aged well being on the Aurora Engine (loading screens galore) but its a heck of a game you missed out on.

    Started Dead Island 2, and i find it pretty lame. The story is shit. The characters are either cringe or bland (all 6 of them), The gameplay isn't fun. Even the goddamn zombies don't behave like proper zombies. They're all fast & intelligent unlike how zombies are supposed to be like. Any fan of "zombie" genre cannot possibly like this shitfest of a game. Dying Light 2 was million times better than this shit.
