So a little trivia for y'all: Sardar Builders - you know who they are? They're the owners behind Centaurus.

And yes, they're LOADED with money!

No wonder they're the top bidder right now.

I, too, wished Nayatel got a license. They're already running digital cable services, so even if they don't, it's alright. They just won't be able to broadcast via satellite, nor will they be able to widen their footprint.

PTCL: honestly, screw them. They're a let down with their Smart TV (they could have done so much more with IPTV, but nope! Instead, they're running the streams on 360p, with no TV guide, no internet access on the STBs, and no applications whatsoever). Nayatel isn't too advanced either, but at least you get their VOD on both computers and their STB, have the ability to record TV streams, has a fancier interface, and doesn't broadcast in potato quality <--- which is the most important thing for ANY tv service!

Nayatel! Nayatel! Nayatel! Nayatel! Nayatel! Nayatel!

Edit: the top bids keep changing! Sardar Builders is in the top 5 (https://propakistani.pk/2016/11/23/pemra-awaits-supreme-court-order-proceeding-dth-auction-toda/). Also, I couldn't find much on the other companies - IQ Communications is some computer hardware store of some sort, Shahzad Sky looks to be owned by a conglomerate, Orient - I think they could be the fridge walay AC walay people.

Let's see how this pans out. It is kinda interesting to watch!

Ninja edit: Sardar = #8 , Nayatel = #6 . Mag Entertainment = #1 .

WHERE IS THIS MONEY COMING FROM?! Who exactly pays taxes in Pakistan? Let's hope these guys don't get a 19.5% tax like the telecom sector does.

shaheerk this licence would be a cash cow for the companies that win. I'm sure they will sit the night out if they have to rather than go home. ;-)

psy13 - considering three licenses are to be given, and that the 11 players are fighting for the pie (8 are very close to each other), I'm hoping it'll be a win-win for the consumers. I also hope they don't jack up the prices for the end-user.

And DTH providers would make money by charging TV channels to carry them on their bouquet - that's how many DTH providers work. The TV channels earn money from ads and subscriptions.

But if the license cost goes very high, then don't expect cheap services in the short term.

WHOA WHOA WHOA! NAYATEL IS BACK in the top 3! (Propakistani live thread).

"Mag Entertainment – Rs. 3,384 Million
Shahzad Sky- Rs. 3,380 Million
Nayatel – Rs. 3,376 Million"

Come on, Nayatel! Just stay in the top 3!

Favourable to consumers that there will be 3 dth providers so a fair bit of competition there! THEN there is a big But because the three winners might decide to secretly fix pricing which in turn won't make it cheap for the consumers. I hope this does not occur though.

The thing that frightens me most is lack of foreign (non indian) channels that hold landing rights in Pakistan. I don't really know if these foreign channels will find Pakistan to be such a lucrative market for them to be investing in landing rights here. So will these dth providers have to pay these foreign channels to broadcast them or will these foreign channels pay the dth providers to add their channel to the list?

Some of these companies might just be playing it cool for now and might bid in the last couple of minutes aggressively for dth licence. Nayatel should win a licence! :)

O well Lahore high Court can still crash this party ... Strange country this is
After fierce bid-war of over 15 hours, PEMRA announced three winners as following:

Mag Entertainment
Shahzad Sky
Startimes Communication

Successful bid was announced at Rs. 4.898 billion for single license. All three winners will get DTH license for this same amount.

PEMRA, as a whole, will bag Rs. 14.694 billion as a result of this bidding.

Process had started DTH bidding after Supreme Court issued a short order allowing it to hold the auction. Apex Court, however, said that outcome of bidding will be conditional with High Court’s detailed order.

DTH can never replace cable TV providers especially when it comes to cost effect. Even in a country like Germany, only 60% market share is with DTH. In India DTH has just grabbed 22% market share so it's not like in Dec 2017 cable TV will vanish n we all will get great quality service.
In next one year cable TV providers will also convert to digital channels n will improve their connection quality.
Pemra expected $150 million bidding from all 3 licenses so they couldn't meet their target I think ($150 million makes how much in rupees?)
It's not like 200 million will shift to DTH, it will all depend on cost n packages which in any case will be more than DishTV n TATASky was available for. There r so many variables.
Waisay has anyone checked what all services DTH providers will provide ...
Each DTH provider if sells his package for 1500 then atleast 3.3 million connections each will cover their license cost. This doesn't include infrastructure development cost n salaries :)
In 2003 STB used to cost 4000 INR now it's less than 500. Also Pakistan broadcasters Association PBA has denied to provide it's channels to DTH providers, off course they will take money for this as well. Every DTH provider will buy broadcasting rights from each channel from local broadcasters. Then we have international channels as well. Very difficult marketing strategy will have to be developed.

Wikipedia says
India is the largest DTH market in the world by number of subscribers. As of May 2016, there were 84.80*million DTH subscribers in the country.[2]*The market is serviced by 6 pay DTH providers and 2 free DTH providers
84 million connections in a country of billion. It will include many cable operators n many other individuals who have multiple connections n still DTH has not fully taken over cable providers in india.

Those who think investing 5 billion in dth is alot in pakistan let me make them clear our pop is 15 to 17 crore may be more dont know exact
Lets do the math here:
Suppose 10% of the total pop buys dth from three companies that make it 5 lac customers each
They start their services with basic 1000 rs package keeping around 200 to 400 gross profit from each sale.
So on avg 300*500000= 150000000
Thats like 15 crore a month
Divide by 500 crore = in three to four years they will easily reach break even.

5 billion is license cost, next there r many other expenses. Infrastructure development, broadcasting rights from all channels including domestic and international, salaries, hardware, marketing etc etc. Each License holder company will get lots and lots of sponsorships and endorsements. So I don't think they can break even by selling their packages n hardware to customers. 1000-2000 monthly charges might not include STB n other hardware. Then satellite used by each service provider will be another expenditure. I'm not an expert of how a DTH service setup is established but license cost is just tip of the iceberg.
