I have a home network of my own and it shouldn't cost you more than a 1000. Thing which are needed.

1) CAT 5 Cables
2) Switch

the computer through which you are using the net should be assigned 192.168.0.1 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0. Leave the default gateway and DNS setting for this computer. The connection which you are using for the internet right click on it, go to Advanced then click the option that s says allow network computer to use net through this computer.

For the other computer assign IP 192.168.0.2 and subnet of 255.255.255.0. For default gateway and DNS type 192.168.0.1 as you are using the internet on this machine. That should do the trick if it still not works let me know.

there is a way but if net wala is a smart guy he'll detect it instantly... now days LAN wala r becoming smart.... usually LAN cards are on even the PC is turned off..... for easiness and cost reduction u could a single crossover cable to connect the two... u'll need two LAN cards on server and a songle lan card on client.... now don't ask me how to create it just google it....

Normally if you have cable net the LAN cable can be inserted in the switch. in that way even if your computer is off the other computer can still use it. However if you are using a DSL (which i am using too) you don't have much options with it as the modem is connected using the usb port. So in short

1) if you cable net, just plug its cable in the switch. You have to change the IP address of the 192.168.0.1 to any other address as .0.1 is used for computers who have internet on them. ask the cable wala what is his IP address or DNS server IP. Put that IP in the default gateway and DNS.

2)if you have DSL hmmmm i cant help you there.

yar when PC is switched off LAN still works.... if u have LAN or DSL.... if u want to connect two PCs then just use a single crossover cable, no switches etc and use windows XP's network wizard....

your home network will work..... i often connect my PS2 or friend's aptop just with a single crossover cable.... the point is if u want to use more than two devices then use a switch... else use a crossover cable
