It think it's time to wrap this thread up. Shannon Loftis, General Manager of Microsoft Studios Global Publishing, said the following:

"As a developer, I would bet no one chooses different frame-rates for multiplayer games ever."

According to the latest digital foundry Destiny 2 video. So that's that I guess. Mike probably got a little too excited over twitter.

Why Can't Destiny 2 Run at 60fps on PS4 Pro? - YouTube

Both statements confirm the same thing: MS leaving it upto the devs to decide. Why are people making a fuss then if they trust the developers to do whats best for their games?

Hilariously enough, DF also used BF1 as an example. Hilariously enough, I had no idea even Pro struggles to maintain 60fps so frequently. I guess when the performance is all over the place on both platforms, a case can be made for achieving "parity" lol

On the contrary, I didn't cement your point. The existence of two variables doesn't mean there needs to be an additional variable, especially one that brings a more noteworthy impact than the other two. Genre is not a variable here, btw. A higher frame rate is beneficial in multiplayer regardless of genre.
so ur saying that a higher frame rate with poor latency compared to a lower frame rate with excellent latency will favor the higher framerate every single time in any situation? come on man does that really makes sense to u?

genre is a variable since certain games like sports, platformers, puzzlers, turn based etc will not be as drastically effected as FPS, TPS, beat-em-ups. unless ur talking abt extremely low frames that could break any game

It's not due to latency, but due to the fact that Forza Horizon 3 is a poor port on PC. Up until recently, it ran on a single CPU thread, resulting in stuttering at higher than 30fps.
Horizon 3 has several technical issues no doubt but the game can be very acceptable with locked framerates (30FPS or 60FPS). i play with the 60FPS lock and no i don't face any shuttering or input latency. what makes my case worse is piss poor pings and nothing else.

Haha I hope this is not a serious argument. I mean, what's stopping your opponent from picking the same car as you?
uh in game currency. the game does not just hand u the cars for free. one has to earn them through blood and sweat :)

its what happens to me while playing with usuf. he usually has better cars since he has clocked a lot more time in this game than me.

its kinda gratifying when a major video game company has the same thoughts as u :D i said only some idiot will decide upon different framerates for games that depend heavily on them, on the same ecosystem. having the freedom to do so just shows how much MS trust their partners.

Even if they're not mandating it one way or another, you can bet your butt MS and Sony will do their best to ensure their 50+ million user database isn't being shortchanged. They need those software sales after all.

As John says in the video, both Pro and Scorpio are being designed to push higher resolutions first and foremost.

Told you guys before.

  • Shooters striving for 60 fps still struggle to hit the mark even on pro console
  • Shooters that consistently hit 60 fps do so at the cost of permanent resolution downgrade or dynamic downgrade

Let's face it. Bungo made the right choice and most people simply want to point fingers just because of the fact. Also DF confirmed the PS4 footage captured earlier was rendering at 1080p and never went below 30 fps.

Also keep in mind we've not even seen this game's engine showcasing its best. Let it come out first before we throw the "lazy devs" banter around.

You're already shortchanged when your upper limit is determined by a weaker and cheaper console.
And the parity is broken already by higher res. Resolution is a huge factor in certain types of games where maps are open and you have to spot and aim players through distant complex geometry which is better resolved at higher resolutions. This is exacerbated by the fact that all players have varying display sizes and fov sliders where players with bigger display with 4K res are at an "unfair advantage".
As John says in the video, both Pro and Scorpio are being designed to push higher resolutions first and foremost.
Nothing we didnt already know as they were marketed as 4K machines and ever since it was finalised that the iterations will stick to Jaguar cores. Though many games feature a performance mode where higher frame rates can be achieved at the expense of the resolution, so it entirely depends on the game and the developers.

Depends on how poor your ping is against the host in a p2p scenario. Usually, it won't be poor enough to balance out twice the frame rate. If it is, it's a failure of the game's matchmaking. I can't remember the last time I played a multiplayer game where the pings were that bad. I haven't played FH3 online, though.

Not true. 60fps results in more responsive input regardless of the genre. I can't think of any competitive platformer or puzzle game, but w.r.t. sports games, a difference of 30/60fps would certainly make a difference in a game like FIFA.

i play with the 60FPS lock and no i don't face any shuttering or input latency. what makes my case worse is piss poor pings and nothing else.
You probably didn't notice it. This has been tested with numerical results. Check the DF article and videos. It's not an argument but a fact that the PC version ran poorly above 30fps due to its single-thread CPU utilization. Things have improved after the last patch, though.

uh in game currency. the game does not just hand u the cars for free. one has to earn them through blood and sweat :)

Of course, but this is an in-game element, and you are free to spend more time and get the same cars. Or, just get the pay-to-win ultimate edition and gain access to the better cars anyway lol.

i said only some idiot will decide upon different framerates for games that depend heavily on them, on the same ecosystem.
This already happens in most games that offer competitive crossplay with PC, even on PS4. The big difference is that you can use filters to exclude PC players during matchmaking. Can you do that in FH3, though?

The DF article 'cements' why Bungie locked Destiny 2 @ 30 fps for all console systems!
Anyone still criticizing them for doing that is a stupid idiot!

Not really .. we've already seen games pushing higher frame rates and (i will argue) better visuals then what we've seen for Destiny 2. Battlefield 1 and CoD: Infinite Warfare to name 2. Even Halo 5 pushed 60 FPS for goodness sake. Bungie's engine for Destiny 1 was designed with a 30 FPS codebase for consoles and they're using the same tech with minimal effects related upgrades from what we've seen. Better DoF, light shafts etc. Nothing FUNDAMENTAL is different about it.

[h=1]Xbox Scorpio developers now have 1 GB of extra RAM[/h]

[h=2]Improving performance for all games[/h]

Microsoft has freed up an extra gigabyte of Xbox Scorpio’s system memory, giving developers more power to use with games.

“We’ll keep tuning Scorpio to empower creators to share the best versions of their games,” said Mike Ybarra, corporate vice president for Xbox and Windows gaming at Microsoft, on Twitter today. “Unlocked extra GB of RAM for them, now 9GB of GDDR5.”
Scorpio contains a total of 12 GB of system memory, as Microsoft announced when it revealed the console’s hardware specifications in April. At the time, Microsoft said the console would reserve 4 GB of RAM — one-third of the total — for system functions. The company explained that while the Xbox One held back 3 GB of its 8 GB of RAM for that purpose, Scorpio needed an extra 1 GB to run its interface at 4K resolution. It seems that Microsoft’s engineers have figured out how to get Scorpio to run its system processes with just 3 GB of memory.

The PlayStation 4 splits up its memory similarly. The launch PS4 had 8 GB of GDDR5 RAM, 3 GB of which was reserved for the system. Sony added 1 GB of DDR3 RAM to the PS4 Pro in a way that freed up about a gigabyte of the GDDR5 memory; half of that extra 1 GB of RAM is available to developers and the other half is used to draw the console’s interface at 4K.

It’s also worth noting that Scorpio uses much faster memory than the Xbox One and the Xbox One S. Both of those models of the Xbox One have 8 GB of DDR3 RAM plus 32 MB of embedded static RAM (ESRAM). In the original console, the memory bandwidth was 68 GB per second for the DDR3 RAM and up to 204 GB per second for the ESRAM; Microsoft boosted the ESRAM’s bandwidth to 219 GB per second in the Xbox One S. But Scorpio contains 12 GB of unified GDDR5 RAM with a bandwidth of 326 GB per second.
Ybarra noted in a follow-up tweet that the extra gigabyte of free RAM will improve performance for all games on Scorpio. Even if a game was developed with 8 GB of RAM in mind, as opposed to 9 GB, the remaining free RAM “will be used as a cache (making things load way faster, etc.),” said Ybarra. In all, this should give Scorpio even more of a power advantage over the PS4 Pro than it already has.

Microsoft’s Xbox One upgrade will be called the Xbox One X, the company announced during its E3 2017 press briefing today.

The Xbox One X will be released Nov. 7 worldwide, Xbox head Phil Spencer announced. However, the company has yet to announce a price — we’ll update as soon as that happens.
Microsoft updated the Xbox One last year with the Xbox One S, a white redesign of the original black console that reduced its size by 40 percent. Unlike the Xbox One S, the Xbox One X will come in black — although it looks very similar to the white console in design, as you can see above.
The Xbox One S is currently available at a $50 discount, which drops the price of the cheapest bundle to just $199.99. Scorpio will be a significantly more powerful console, with a more than fourfold increase over the Xbox One's graphics capability, a 31 percent increase in CPU speed, and a 50 percent increase in onboard RAM.

[h=1]Free 4K game updates are coming to Xbox One X[/h]

[h=2]More than 30 third-party titles already announced[/h]

Several games will receive free updates for 4K compatibility when Xbox One X launches this November, Microsoft announced during its E3 2017 press conference.

Among these are Gears of War 4, Killer Instinct, Minecraft, Forza Horizon 3 and Halo Wars 2. But the upgrades will also come to more than 30 third-party titles, running the gamut from Final Fantasy 15 to Resident Evil 7. Microsoft hinted at a handful of other games that will be enhanced for Xbox One X at no cost during the conference, with many more expected.
Xbox One X will launch on Nov. 7 and cost $499. The upgraded console boasts a more than four-fold increase over the Xbox One’s graphics capability, a 31 percent increase in CPU speed, and a 50 percent increase in onboard RAM. It’s also the smallest Xbox ever, a point that Microsoft made early on during its briefing today.
E3 2017 begins on June 13, with press conferences starting June 10. For the big announcements, make sure to check out our one-stop shop for the show's streams.

[h=1]Microsoft: Company not making money on Xbox One X at $500[/h]

[h=2]May not be losing money, either[/h]

Microsoft won’t be making money on the sale of its upcoming new console, the Xbox One X, head of Xbox Phil Spencer told Business Insider in a recent interview.

When asked if the console was losing money on each sale, Spencer didn’t further specify to the reporter.
He did have this to say, though, when it comes to the traditional route by which most game systems and their designers have made money:
"I don't want to get into all the numbers, but in aggregate you should think about the hardware part of the console business is not the money-making part of the business. The money-making part is in selling games."

At $499, the reaction to the Xbox X wasn’t exactly positive. Despite that, Microsoft said, following its price-revealed press conference, that it wasn’t just OK with the high cost of the new system, it was “proud” of it.
The console, according to Microsoft, will be the most powerful gaming console in the world when it is released in November.
The Xbox One X hits Nov. 7 for $499 and will include support for enhanced visuals such as 4K and HDR video. Microsoft said that 35 existing games will receive a free upgrade to take advantage of the new tech, with more to come.

[h=1]4K assets for games will only go out to Xbox One X owners, says Microsoft[/h]

[h=2]Huge downloads should go only to those who need them[/h]

When it launches, only those who have the Xbox One X will download the assets optimizing games for its 4K capabilities. Those with a regular Xbox One won't, Microsoft said yesterday.

This is in contrast to the downloads for games on the PlayStation 4 Pro, whose optimization assets are pushed to everyone with the game, regular PS4 or Pro.
Steve Wright got confirmation from Microsoft about Xbox One X asset distribution yesterday. It's not a trivial issue. Forza Motorsport 7's Xbox One X version clocks in at a 100 GB download — meaning that getting an Xbox One X without also owning a 4K TV means giving over a significant chunk of the new console's 1 TB hard drive to assets that aren't used.
Microsoft also told Wright that it will provide developers with "tools to make downloads more efficient.

"We have made available a feature which will give [developers] significant flexibility when it comes to what gets installed on a user's console," the company told Wright. That includes language-specific assets, which can slim the size of a download. In any case, it will be up to developers to take advantage of these options.
