TechRadar: Xbox Series X's cross-gen approach is robbing players of the next-gen thrill

We've been waiting for a while to finally see next-gen gameplay, for both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, because it's arguably one of the biggest moments in a new console's reveal road - that moment when you see just how much the games themselves, not just the hardware, have been able to advance. We want to see something mind-blowing.


But we didn't get that from Microsoft. Instead we got 13 game reveals with 'Xbox Series X Optimized' badges and a lot of talk about Smart Delivery. We don't want to be told that these games will look better, we want to see it. I (personally) want a reason to upgrade, not to be stuck in a limbo between this generation and the next. All this focus on cross-gen by Microsoft is robbing us of that initial next-gen thrill.

But but....games are scalable :hah:

Spoiler: people will also be disappointed with Halo Infinite, as it's already known to be a cross-gen title.

Imagine if Sony had to develop Killzone: SF and Infamous: SS with PS3 versions in mind. There were PS3/X360 versions of Battlefield 3 and 4, and the multiplayer was different from their PC/PS4/XBO counterparts. Wouldn't have worked in the current scenario, as MS is trying to push for cross-play across Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

Thousands of games will be supported on the next-gen Xbox

Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox will launch with support for “thousand of games” from the original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, the company says. On Thursday, the company pledged more than just basic support for those older games — they should play better than ever before, according to Jason Ronald, director of program management for Xbox Series X.
That includes support for HDR color in Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles, and even “double the frame rate of a select set of titles from 30 fps to 60 fps or 60 fps to 120 fps.”
“Backwards compatible games run natively on the Xbox Series X hardware, running with the full power of the CPU, GPU and the SSD,” Ronald said in a blog post published on Xbox Wire. “No boost mode, no down clocking, the full power of the Xbox Series X for each and every backward compatible game. This means that all titles run at the peak performance that they were originally designed for, many times even higher performance than the games saw on their original launch platform, resulting in higher and more steady framerates and rendering at their maximum resolution and visual quality. Backwards compatible titles also see significant reductions in in-game load times from the massive leap in performance from our custom NVME SSD which powers the Xbox Velocity Architecture.”
Microsoft offered similar performance upgrades for Xbox 360 titles on Xbox One X, the company’s mid-generation update to Xbox One. Select Xbox 360 games can run at 4K resolution and enhanced color depth on Xbox One X. But it appears that Microsoft is taking backward compatibility support to a new level with Xbox Series X, which is due this holiday season.
“The team developed new platform level capabilities to ensure all of your games continue to get even better,” Ronald said. “In partnership with the Xbox Advanced Technology Group, Xbox Series X delivers a new, innovative HDR reconstruction technique which enables the platform to automatically add HDR support to games. As this technique is handled by the platform itself, it allows us to enable HDR with zero impact to the game’s performance and we can also apply it to Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles developed almost 20 years ago, well before the existence of HDR.
“In addition, the new Quick Resume feature was designed to not only work with new games, but it can also be enabled for backward-compatible titles. Quick Resume enables players to resume exactly where they left off, across multiple titles, ensuring gamers can get right back to the fun in an instant.”
Ronald also leaves the door open for an expanded backward compatibility library. Microsoft announced in 2019 the final list of backward compatible original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles for Xbox One, saying that it was shifting its efforts to focus on future compatibility, but with that work nearing its goal, it appears the Xbox team is considering the addition of more older titles.
“The team also continues to listen to feedback from the community on additional titles you would like to see added to the compatibility program,” Ronald said. “Resurrecting titles from history often presents a complex mix of technical and licensing challenges, but the team is committed to doing everything we can to continue to preserve our collective gaming legacy.”

Microsoft is doing away with pesky codes for pack-in games, DLC, and subscriptions

Setting up a modern video game console has traditionally meant punching in a bunch of lengthy codes. Any games that came packed in, along with any promotional memberships, each have their own string of letters and numbers to sort out. Going forward, Microsoft plans to do away with those codes. A new program called Digital Direct embeds those games, DLC packages, and trial subscriptions directly on the console itself.
The change to all-digital redemption for new consoles was quietly made on the Xbox website in an undated post. In fact, if you purchased a console recently you might have some goodies that you missed.
“During the Setup Process for your new console,” says Microsoft, “the content and service offers attached to the console will appear to redeem. Click ‘Claim it’ to redeem each item. Once redeemed, your content can be found in your digital library under My Games & Apps.”

Image: MicrosoftNote that according to Microsoft anything you redeem in this manner will be attached to the first account that redeems it. You also have the option to skip redemption during setup. To redeem those items later on you’ll need to navigate to your account, and then find a menu option labeled “Included with this Xbox.” Alternately, you can also find that same menu option in your library under the “Full Library” tab.
The benefits for consumers is pretty obvious, but there’s also a big upside for Microsoft. Many consumers simply don’t bother to sign up for Xbox Live when they get a new console, and they may not actually know what Xbox Game Pass is. This new Digital Direct feature makes it easier to get them into the ecosystem.
Another obvious upside is keeping loose codes off secondary marketplaces, some of which have been shown to enable fraud.

Xbox’s newest console is almost here, and one question on peoples’ minds is what exactly they’ll be able to play once the console arrives. On Thursday Microsoft gave players a little more insight into the answer to that question by explaining exactly what it means when a game is optimized for the Xbox Series X.
According to Microsoft, certain games will be designed specifically to take advantage of theXbox Series X’s impressive technical specs. These games will get a special badge that says “Optimized for Xbox Series X.” Games with this badge will be specially designed to perform better on Microsoft’s next-gen console. Microsoft’s announcement says that the badge will indicate games that have been “natively designed or fully rebuilt to take advantage of the Xbox Series X.”


his will include games like Halo Infinite, which is being designed specifically for the Xbox Series X, as well as Gears 5, which will have a new update that rebuilds the game to “dramatically leverage the power and features Xbox Series X has to offer.” In many cases, these games may also be available on the Xbox One, but the Xbox Series X version will include specific improvements like upgraded frame rates, decreased load times, and more impressive graphical features like DirectX Raytracing.

Releasing games 3~4 years later while having consoles as their primary output is all about the console sphere. Sony is out for selling/making games for their PS consoles with occasional PC releases for their exclusive stuff once every couple of years.

MS has all but abandoned the idea of having any true console exclusives now, hence people aren't exactly buying up Xboxes either.

Sony will now be making money off every Xbox title that uses UE. It already makes money from the bluray license that is given to the Xbox family of consoles.

Yeah Microsoft has moved on from Xbox exclusives, even Sony have exclusive games releasing on steam now. The Xbox showcase will have a great number of games announced if rumors are to be believed with most of them coming to PC.
