Valve’s Steam Deck in our hands

Switch-like Steam portable is coming this December

The Steam Deck is a new handheld device from Valve for playing PC games on the go, the company announced Thursday. The Nintendo Switch-like device is set for release in December starting at $399.

Previously rumored as the “SteamPal,” the Steam Deck is a portable PC that’s slightly larger than the Nintendo Switch. It features a 7-inch touchscreen, two thumbsticks, a D-pad, and a four-button layout. There are also two trackpads — one on either side of the machine, under the thumbsticks — to allow for increased precision. The Steam Deck has eight triggers on its back: four on the device’s shoulders and four more where the ring and pinky fingers rest.

The Steam Deck will run games from players’ existing Steam libraries. Players will simply log into their account, and their friends and catalog should follow them onto the handheld. The Steam Deck is capable of running PC games on its own hardware, without the power of the cloud. Videos released by Valve show people using the Steam Deck to natively play games such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Crusader Kings 3, Disco Elysium, Hades, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Players can also purchase a dock that allows the Steam Deck to run on a TV.

Inside, the Steam Deck boasts an accelerated processing unit (APU) built by AMD. Its CPU is based on the company’s Zen 2 microarchitecture and tops out at 3.5 GHz. The GPU contains eight RDNA 2 compute units running at up to 1.6 GHz, delivering peak performance of 1.6 teraflops. The system packs 16 GB of RAM and a microSD card slot, allowing users to expand upon the built-in storage. The Steam Deck’s 7-inch screen is an LCD with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 60 Hz refresh rate at a 720p resolution of 1280x800. The Steam Deck also features a dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi radio — it’s compatible with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks — and Bluetooth 5.0 for controllers, accessories, and (unlike the Switch) audio.

At launch, the Steam Deck will be available in three models with different storage options. Valve says there are no performance differences between the three versions — aside from the speed of the flash memory, which will provide varying read and write speeds.

The $399 base model offers 64 GB of storage in the eMMC format. The next model up costs $529, and packs faster storage courtesy of a 256 GB PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD; it also comes with an “exclusive Steam Community profile bundle.” The top-tier Steam Deck, at $649, includes a 512 GB NVMe SSD that Valve refers to as “high-speed,” although it is still a PCIe 3.0 drive. In addition, this model’s screen features “premium anti-glare etched glass.” The unit comes with an exclusive carrying case and exclusive virtual keyboard theme, on top of the cheaper models’ bonuses.

Steam users will be able to reserve any of the three Steam Deck models (for a fee) starting at 1 p.m. EDT on Friday, July 16 — as long as they made a purchase on the Steam Store at some point before June 2021. If not, they’ll have to wait until 48 hours later.

The Switch easily fits in my pocket with the joy-cons detached. Its modularity makes it more practical to carry around compared to the Steam Deck.
You must have some big pockets on your clothes lol. I couldn't imagine fitting a Switch in my pants or jacket pockets even with the joycons detached.
Hahahahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣

No one cares as long as we get them faster. It doesn't have any effect on performance so its fine. And valve is shipping TONS more decks now that they increased production speed. Like 3x times

As a portable device, it's not terribly portable. Its battery life is notably low when playing demanding AAA games, its screen doesn't look nearly as good as my Switch OLED, it has a somewhat noisy fan, and the device itself is clunky. While it isn't heavy, the Steam Deck has a massive form factor that makes it hard to hold comfortably for long stretches of time. When I play, I usually have to rest it on my lap to avoid strain
If I have a choice between buying a game on Switch and Steam Deck, I'm always going to run to the eShop first, even if I'm risking a performance dip or paying a few extra bucks. I like holding the thing more and I know I'm going to get a reliable experience, which isn't always the case with Steam Deck. When I got Soundfall for PC, I was disappointed to find that the game hadn't been properly optimized for the device yet. I didn't see any of its cutscenes because they were replaced with TV color bars.

That's another reason why the Steam Deck functions more like a home console for me. I've run into situations where I happily downloaded a game, packed my Steam Deck for a trip, and booted it up only to learn that the game didn't run. I always need my PC nearby as a safety net.
There are also specific types of games that I just would rather play on a Switch. If I plan on playing a long RPG, one which I'll mostly be tackling portably, I want my Switch. I'm not going to spend 90 hours playing Persona 5 on a console that starts to strain my wrists after 90 minutes. I'm still excited when I see games like Nier Automata coming to Switch. Even if I can already play them on Steam Deck, I don't really want to play them there.
Hehehe 🤷‍♂️

Ryzen 6800U Based A1 Almost A Generational Leap Over The Valve’s Steam Deck
The handheld entered an “influencer field test” phase of development. This means that influencer big shots will be sent a prototype to play with and review. One of such reviews comes for ETA Prime, an almost 900k subscribers tech channel, showcasing the first hardware to pull off 1080P AAA Gaming on a handheld:

2022 really feels like the year of handheld PCs, with some exciting new prototypes being unveiled on what feels to be a monthly basis! I can’t wait to see the future of PC handheld gaming. With the increased competition Valve really needs to step up with the Steam Deck 2.

Just look at the 6800U. It feels like holding a 1kg> device between your hands that is on paper more powerful than the PS4! The 60FPS Forza Horizon 5 gameplay on a handheld is mind shattering. Devices like this are sure to change the gaming industry.

When it comes to the downsides of the product. AOKZOE, the brand behind the console, is just a “sub-brand” of One Notebook. Also responsible for the ONEXPLAYER brand. Which is a little bit of a red flag. Since ONEXPLAYER has a history of being downright awful when it comes to supporting their products. Reports of analog sticks not working and suffering from giant cross-shaped dead zones are rampant when it comes to some of their products.

Another downside is the look of the handheld. Although that’s a personal preference. But in MY personal preference, the handheld just looks cheap. It also says “Hardcore Gaming Console” on top of it, which made me gag a little.

The crowdfunding for the Aokoze A1 project starts on Kickstarter on July 7th!

These are nothing new tho, portables like these have existed for a long time before steamdeck even was anything but a rumor. They have poor support, high price and way too many bugs to be a mainstream device.

Only thing that'll outgun the steamdeck is the steamdeck 2.

Yep. Steam Deck's value proposition is hard to beat. And ain't no chance in hell a kickstarter company is going to undercut Valve. Not to mention, they don't have a good track record in the first place.

What is peoples obsession with Battle Royale genre. 6 minutes to find a match, 3 minutes to setup a match, 2 minutes to land, 10 minutes for scavanging maybe 2 3 gunfigts and its over. Multiplayer landscape is looking absolute dogshit.
I tried playing Apex Legends once. Couldn't find a gun for 5 minutes straight. If I found a gun, I couldn't find the right ammo for it. Got killed fighting with my fists. Uninstalled it the next day.
