Sony just dumped a huge load of information regarding the PlayStation 4. It covers practically everything that you need to know about Sony's upcoming console, including what accessories are compatible, how sharing works, and lots more.

Here's some particular items of note when I briefly went over the FAQ. According to Sony, the internal 500 GB hard drive is replaceable, however, players will not be able to extend storage capacity via USB external hard drives. The hard drive in the PS4 itself will be a 5400 RPM SATA II hard drive. For those who wish to upgrade, the hard drive must be larger than 160 GB and no thicker than 9.5mm

For those going the physical route for next-gen gaming, all PS4 disc-based games must be cached to the hard drive.

Yes, all PS4 Blu-ray Disc games must be cached to the hard drive to ensure a smooth gaming experience. However, certain titles may not require you to wait for the game data to be fully cached before starting gameplay. In order to start playing disc-based games, users will need to insert the game disc into PS4 just like on the PS3 system.

The cache data, Sony says, can't be used for the digital versions of the same title if players theoretically rent the game, install the cache, and then try to purchase the game later from PSN. The game will have to be fully downloaded.

You may have noticed last week when we reported details about Firmware 1.50 that users will need to connect to the internet in order to play back movies via Blu-ray and DVD [Edit: This activation only needs to be done once]. Sony says North American users can contact SCEA Consumer Services for a Blu-ray activation disc for those that cannot connect online.

Those who were hoping to stream videos or movies from a PC via DLNA or media servers will be sad to hear that the PS4 will "not support client functionality for media servers." [Edit: I missed this my first time, but PS4 will not support MP3s either, nor does it include a music visualizer feature. PS4 will support background music playback during PS4 gaming but you'll need a Music Unlimited subscription for music.]

In regards to features that have been announced for PS4 but won't be available at launch, Sony lists these items:
Share controller via the internet to assist a friend
Suspend/Resume mode
Wireless Stereo Headsets support
Wireless Stereo Headset
Pulse Wired Stereo Headset
Pulse Wireless Stereo Headset Elite Edition

Other information provided in the FAQ reveals that your PSN ID name cannot be changed, though users can use their real names in addition to their Online ID. Players can import their Facebook photo as their PSN profile picture.

In regards to gameplay sharing, Sony says players can't export their footage to other devices other than the share functionality. Video can be shared to Facebook and livestreamed to Ustream or Twitch, but YouTube won't be an option. People with external HDMI-based game capture devices will have to wait for an upcoming firmware update.

Keep checking back to this official FAQ, and we’ll continue to add launch titles as they are confirmed.

How much will PS4 games cost?

Pricing will vary from publisher to publisher and game to game. Games such as Killzone: Shadow Fall will retail for $59.99 (MSRP) on Blu-ray Disc and digital PlayStation Store download. Other digital titles will sell for much less, such as Resogun. PS4 will also support free-to-play titles, which feature free gameplay as well as additional paid content.

How do customers purchase PS4 games?

You can purchase Blu-ray games at retailers, or purchase and download the game from PlayStation Store to PS4’s internal hard drive. You can also purchase digital games through the Sony Entertainment Network online store via PC and compatible mobile devices through PlayStation App — if your PS4 is in standby mode, the game will automatically download.

Will I be able to purchase digital games on the same release date as their retail Blu-ray versions?

Ultimately, the decision lies with publishers on whether to make digital versions of games available on the same release date. However, we anticipate that most PS4 games will be available for purchase digitally via PlayStation Store on the same day as their retail Blu-ray counterparts.

Will you offer digital pre-orders of PS4 launch titles via PS Store before the PS4 launch?

Yes, PS3 users can currently pre-order digital versions of a selection of PS4 launch titles including Knack and Warframe, both of which offer bonus content. Read here for more details.

No, PS4 does not feature backward compatibility for PS3, PS2, or PSone games.

Will any PlayStation Store content purchased on PS3 or PS Vita systems be transferable to a PS4 system?

In some cases, yes. For example, a selection of popular digital titles including Flower, flOw, Escape Plan and Sound Shapes will be available to purchase on PS4 after launch. Gamers who purchased these titles for the PS3 or PS Vita systems (the PS Vita system only, in the case of Escape Plan) will be able to download the PS4 versions of these titles, some of which feature enhanced graphics or improved features, to their PS4 systems for no additional charge.

I heard I can “upgrade” certain PS3 games to work on a PS4 system? How does that work?

Yes, for a limited time and with a $9.99 upgrade fee, you can digitally “upgrade” your purchase of three currently supported games: Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, and Battlefield 4 to its full PS4 version. Click here for further details.

The functionality is technically possible and some developers may choose to support it for their titles.

Will PS4 allow me to suspend and resume my progress across different games?

This feature will not be available at launch.
PS4 Used Games

Does PS4 support used games?

Yes, similar to the PS3 system today, PS4 will not restrict players from playing disc-based used games. When a gamer buys a PS4 disc, they have right to use that copy of the game, so they can trade-in the game at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever. Furthermore, users will not have to go through activation steps or be charged usage fees when playing used disc-based games on their PS4 system.

Will any PS4 titles use an Online Pass?

First-party titles on PS4 (titles developed by Sony Computer Entertainment) will not use an Online Pass program. When it comes to third-party titles, PlayStation won’t dictate the strategy of publishers concerning Online Pass programs. However, most third parties have phased out the use of Online Pass systems, so they’re unlikely to appear on PS4.

Can PS4 customers lend and borrow games?

Yes, they can lend and borrow disc-based games without restriction.

Can PS4 customers trade and sell games?

Yes, they can trade and sell disc-based games freely.

Does PS4 need an “always on” internet connection in order to play games?

No, PS4 does not require a persistent internet connection to play games, so users can play single-player titles offline at any time. For titles with online multiplayer functionality, an internet connection and a PlayStation Plus membership will be required to play online.

Does PS4 need to occasionally connect online?

Besides system software update 1.50 and a one-time activation for playing Blu-ray Disc and DVD movies, PS4 does not require an online connection for authentication purposes or to play disc-based games. However, PS4 features many advanced online benefits such as live PS4 gameplay streaming, entertainment services and more.

Will PlayStation do any type of authentication for PS4 disc-based games?

No, authentication is not required for PS4 disc-based games under any scenario.

Do PS4 games have regional locks?

In general, neither digital nor disc-based games will be region locked, but PlayStation recommends that all users purchase games at the region of their residence to guarantee the best overall experience and customer service. In certain instances, a software publisher may choose to region lock a game title for specific reasons, but Sony Computer Entertainment expects these instances to be uncommon.

How does the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s integrated touch pad work?

The DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s capacitive touch pad supports drag and drop, flicking, and multi-touch input. The touch pad is also clickable. Developers will choose how these features are used, if at all. In the example of Killzone: Shadow Fall, the touchpad is used to assign different commands to the player’s OWL drone in the single-player campaign.

What can users do with the light bar incorporated into the DUALSHOCK 4 controller?

For developers that choose to support it, the light bar is an immersive and versatile addition to the DUALSHOCK 4 controller. In games such as Killzone: Shadow Fall, the light bar can help communicate status information to the player, changing colors when health runs low. In other games, the light bar’s color can reflect the game’s narrative, and much more. Also, when used in connection with PlayStation Camera, the game can detect and track the position of the DUALSHOCK 4 controller. DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s light bar is limited only by the imagination of game developers.

Can users switch the light bar off and on?

No. The light bar also serves as an indication of whether the DUALSHOCK 4 controller is turned on. Across different games, the color and brightness of the light bar on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller can be adjusted by game developers, but it cannot be completely switched off.

What impact will the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s integrated speaker have on gameplay?

DUALSHOCK 4′s integrated speaker lets inventive game developers immerse players more fully in the game world. In the example of Killzone: Shadow Fall, audio diaries collected in the campaign mode will be broadcast though DUALSHOCK 4 integrated speaker. We anticipate that developers will devise other interesting ways to use this feature.

Has DUALSHOCK 4′s internal motion sensor been upgraded since DUALSHOCK 3?

Yes, DUALSHOCK 4′s upgraded SIXAXIS motion sensor is noticeably more responsive compared to DUALSHOCK 3 in supported titles. For example, the PS4 edition of Flower features more responsive motion controls, enabling players to more easily guide flower petals. Does PS4 support the PlayStation Move motion controller?

Yes. Developers will be able to create PS4 titles that use the PS Move controller, with Octodad: Dadliest Catch and Sportsfriends being two upcoming examples. However, PS3 titles that use the PS Move controller will not be supported on PS4.
PlayStation Camera

What is PlayStation Camera capable of?

PlayStation Camera is a newly developed camera for PS4 that incorporates two highly sensitive cameras that can recognize the depth of space. In addition, users will be able to login to their PS4 with face recognition and are capable of using their own body movements or voices to enjoy games more intuitively. Furthermore, PlayStation Camera is capable of sensing the color of DUALSHOCK 4′s light bar to judge the positions of multiple players sitting in the same room. PlayStation Camera is also compatible with the PlayStation Move motion controller, reflecting players’ in-game movements more accurately than ever in PS4 titles that support it.

PlayStation Camera is sold separately for $59.99 (MSRP).

Why does PlayStation Camera incorporate two cameras?

With stereoscopic cameras, PlayStation Camera can capture 3D space images effectively. This technology enables PlayStation Camera to cut out the image of the player from the background, or to grasp a players’ position in front and behind, broadening gameplay possibilities. Game developers will choose how and if these functions are utilized for games.

Does PlayStation Camera include microphones?

Yes, four integrated microphones help obtain accurate sound detection and source origination for voice chat and voice commands.

Does PS4 support voice commands?

Yes. You can purchase a PlayStation Camera (sold separately; $59.99 MSRP) or use the Mono headset that comes with PS4. After enabling the voice control mode, you will be able to control key PS4 functions using commands such as starting up a game or taking a screenshot. At launch in North America, six languages will be supported (English (US and UK), Spanish (European), Italian, French (European), German, Japanese), with more to come following future system software updates.

How big is PlayStation Camera?

PlayStation Camera features a small and lightweight design measuring just approximately 186mm (width) x 27mm (height) x 27mm (length), and weighing just 183 grams (approximately .4 pounds).

What games support PlayStation Camera?

The Playroom is an interactive experience that comes pre-installed on all PS4 systems, and it features different activities using a combination of PlayStation Camera and DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller. PlayStation Camera also has other uses, such as enabling players to narrate their live gameplay experiences streaming to Twitch or UStream, or using voice commands to launch games or initiate features such as taking in-game screenshots.

Does PlayStation Camera support Augmented Reality (AR) technology?

Yes, the PlayStation Camera supports AR technology. An example is in The Playroom, which utilizes AR technology such as AR Bots and Play With Asobi, where users can engage with robot characters displayed on-screen. Also included is AR Hockey, an air hockey game where players can change the shape of the court by moving and rotating the DUALSHOCK 4 controller in different directions.

Is PlayStation Camera necessary to experience The Playroom?

Users can enjoy limited tutorial content for the DUALSHOCK 4 controller without PlayStation Camera. PlayStation Camera is necessary to enjoy other content within The Playroom. As for the DUALSHOCK 4 tutorial, users will be able to display their image on the screen during their play through AR technology if they own PlayStation Camera.

PS Vita Remote Play

What is Remote Play?

Remote Play will enable users to stream their PS4 gameplay to their PS Vita system via WiFi, freeing up the television for other uses. SCEA expects that most PS4 titles will support Remote Play unless the title requires a special peripheral like PlayStation Camera.

When will Remote Play work best?

Remote Play will work best when the PS Vita system is located within the same WiFi network where PS4 is connected. We also recommend that PS4 be connected to the local area network via an Ethernet cable, that a router suitable for gaming be used and that the PS Vita system be within close proximity of the WiFi access point so that the connection is free of interference.

Can Remote Play work outside the user’s home network?

We strongly recommend that Remote Play be used within the same WiFi network where PS4 is connected. Remote Play may or may not work over a wide area network. For Remote Play to function over a wide area network, a robust and stable WiFi connection and broadband Internet connection is required, and the local area network where PS4 is connected must be configured to permit the PS Vita system to access PS4.

How does Remote Play using PS4 and PS Vita systems improve on the current system between PS3 and PS Vita systems?

Remote Play between PS4 and PS Vita systems leverages Gaikai’s proprietary game streaming technology. PS4 supports this technology on a system level in order to reduce the burden for developers. All activities performed during Remote Play will occur on the PS4 system, such as purchasing add-ons, earning Trophies, and saving game progress.

Does PS4 have to be on to take advantage of Remote Play?
Yes. But PS Vita can remotely wake up PS4 when in standby mode, as long as this feature is activated in the Power Settings menu on PS4.

Can I use Remote Play via 3G?

No.

How will Cross Play function between PS4 and PS Vita systems?

As with PS3, supported titles will allow PS4 and PS Vita users to play together in the same game via online multiplayer (PlayStation Plus required for online multiplayer on PS4).

Are there any other cross-functional capabilities between PS Vita and PS4 users?

Players can voice chat or text chat between PS4 and PS Vita systems using the Party application, even during gameplay. Also, users can browse and compare each other’s Trophies. You can also send and receive text messages between PS Vita and PS4.

This means that, for example, if one housemate is a PlayStation Plus member, everyone in the household will have access to online multiplayer. Additionally, on the same PS4 system, any games or content purchased by one user are available to other users who play on that console (unless that content has expired).

How many users can play online multiplayer modes on a single PS4 system set as “Primary” by a PS Plus member?

Can I block or unblock another user on PS4?

Yes, you can block other users on PS4.
PS Store & Digital Games

What is PlayAsYouDownload? Will all PS4 games support this function?

PlayAsYouDownload is a new feature for the PS4 system that speeds access to games downloaded from PlayStation Store. Supported titles will be playable after users download a portion of the data, while the rest of the game is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay. All titles are compatible this function, but certain titles may not support it at launch in North America.

How much will I need to download before I can start playing with PlayAsYouDownload?

The portion of a game that must be downloaded before gameplay begins will vary title by title, as will the time that it takes to download that initial portion. Users will be able to see when they are able to start playing by an indicator on the download progress meter. Certain titles, such as Killzone: Shadow Fall, will enable you to pick which mode to start downloading first, such as single-player or multiplayer.

More Info

You Can Now Use the Dual Shock 4 Controller Wirelessly With PlayStation 3

Thanks to the latest PlayStation 3 firmware update released just last week, the Dual Shock 4 controller can work with the PS3 without being tethered by a cable.

1. Connect Dual Shock 4 controller via USB cable and turn on the PlayStation 3
2. Go to Settings -> Accessory Settings -> Manage Bluetooth Devices
3. Register new device and start scanning
4. Unplug Dual Shock 4 controller and hold PS & Share buttons.
5. Once the lightbar flashes on the Dual Shock 4, plug the controller via cable and select Wireless Controller
6. Complete registration and unplug the controller for wireless gameplay

This method will allow you to use the DS4 controller wirelessly but the PS3 still won't recognize it as an official Sony controller. What that means is that some functionality still won't work like the PS button, Sixaxis motion controls, or vibration.

Update

Update: Sony's Shuhei Yoshida made a tweet today saying that they are listening to feedback regarding DLNA and MP3 support. Perhaps there is a chance that they will come back in the future.

Shuhei Yoshida @yosp Thanks for the feedback to the lack of MP3 and DLNA support at the launch of PS4. I'll share with the PS4 Dev team for future consideration

Furthermore, users will not have to go through activation steps or be charged usage fees when playing used disc-based games on their PS4 system

[h=1]Limitations of PS4 Remote Play Revealed[/h]

While the way Sony has presented Remote Play might have made you think you can play your PS4 games anywhere, anytime on your PS Vita, yesterday's robust FAQ reveals that the range of the functionality is more limited than initially thought.

As outlined in the FAQ that we reported on yesterday, Remote Play, the functionality that enables users to stream their PS4 gameplay to their PS Vita via WiFi, "will work best when the PS Vita system is located within the same WiFi network where PS4 is connected." Furthermore, Sony recommends that the PS4 itself be connected to the local area network via an Ethernet cable, that a router suitable for gaming be used and that the PS Vita be within close proximity of the WiFi access point so that the connection is free of interference.

Obviously, those recommendations suggest that while you'll be able to free up the TV and play your PS4 games on the Vita within your own home, attempting to access your games while venturing outside is going to be a game of chance.

"Remote Play may or may not work over a wide area network," reads the FAQ. "For Remote Play to function over a wide area network, a robust and stable WiFi connection and broadband Internet connection is required, and the local area network where PS4 is connected must be configured to permit the PS Vita system to access PS4."

So, how does this info impact your impression of Remote Play's usefulness? Personally, I still feel I'd utilize the functionality when other family members want to watch the main TV or I just feel like playing PS4 games that support the feature (which will be most of them) in another room, but knowing that I can't utilize Remote Play via 3G (also confirmed in the FAQ) and am limited to my home slightly dampens my enthusiasm.

Omfg sony...So fast in listening to people ....WOW

Though there have been a few missteps on Sony’s behalf from the recent FAQ post riddled with mistakes of no MP3 support, NoDLNA support, and a few other features that are not available at laun
ch. We were able to speak to a Sony rep today about if any of these features could be implemented in the near future and much to our surprise we have received a “Yes“. The future update that is in process to be rolled out shortly after the PS4′s launch(November 15th) will include the following detailed features listed below:

  • Legacy headset support
  • Mp3 support for not only in-game but non gaming as well.
  • Suspend and resume play feature
All of these features are set to hit PS4′s consoles by late 2013- to early 2014. Which we hope
Sony will deliver sooner upon. From what we know these features are being packed in the 2nd forth coming PS4 firmware update. Also these details were hinted today when Shuhei Yoshida made a post on twitter stating that he had a discussion with otherPlayStation 4 development team members about received feedback. With this news being provided Those these features are a definite step in the right direction. We were still unable to confirm future external hard drive support for media or game data would be supported later on. lastly we’re still waiting to hear if there will be future YouTube support for video sharing. What do you think of this good news do you think Sony still needs more features to claim the living room in this next gen console war? comment below let us know.

I have a question too. How long will it take to jailbreak it for hackers after release? Do we need to jailbreak the whole thing or crack it game by game after release?

So while Playing Control, I found a journal which said that a bathroom is missing in Islamabad Beurue of Control. With Alan Wake and Control seems to be connected worlds. Even our city is in the universe as well. No wonder those Trail 5 and Trail 6 are haunted.

What is peoples obsession with Battle Royale genre. 6 minutes to find a match, 3 minutes to setup a match, 2 minutes to land, 10 minutes for scavanging maybe 2 3 gunfigts and its over. Multiplayer landscape is looking absolute dogshit.
I tried playing Apex Legends once. Couldn't find a gun for 5 minutes straight. If I found a gun, I couldn't find the right ammo for it. Got killed fighting with my fists. Uninstalled it the next day.

I usually stay away from animes. Vinland saga changed the way i look at my life, and my experiences within. I recommend every breathing human being to watch this animated masterpiece at least once fromstart to finish.
After I watched it, I never felt like i watched a show. It was a friggin journey. I got way too attached to Thorfinn and seeing him grow up and find himself and get rid of all the negativity inside of him was just pure bliss.

" Both PS5 and Series X have an unlocked frame-rate here, with performance that generally lies between 30fps and 45fps. That makes for a stuttering and inconsistent output in general play, no matter what you are doing at any given time."

I absolutely hate parry and Sekiro made me love it, i hate sci fi and Mass Effect made me love it. This is the definition of genre defining experiences.

With how great cod warzone has translated onto mobile. Mainstream Consoles have lost its value even further. Maybe console gaming was associated with TVs and how TV is not the primary source of media consumption anymore, consoles will lose its 200 million core audiences even further.
