I'm sure developers are going to take this into consideration. They can reduce graphical details on current PS4 to increase framerate for multiplayer.

Hopefully that will be the case, especially with popular existing games like Destiny and The Division.

At least it can be played on 4k at 60FPs.[emoji6]

Going by the leaked specs, native 4K at 30fps may be possible for some games, but 60fps is out of the question. 1080p/60fps will surely be possible, though.

36 CUs implies that the GPU may be in the same ballpark as AMD's forthcoming Polaris 10 card. The CPU will probably be a bottleneck at 2.1Ghz unless core performance per-clock has been improved over the PS4's iteration of the octa-core Jaguar.

Haha you know, I'm willing to bet Sony or retailers in NA/EU will launch some kind of a trade-in program for those with existing PS4s. You should be able to avail such offers.

Meanwhile, those of us in Pakistan will rely on @amaga bhai to sell our weakling PS4s and get us new (read: NEO lol) ones

The bad news is that the cores themselves have not been changed at all - they have simply been overclocked from 1.6GHz to 2.1GHz - a 31 per cent improvement. As with the current PlayStation 4, one core and a time-slice from another is reserved for the operating system.

Pretty disappointing, I was hoping the CPU cores would have some performance improvements outside of a bump in clock speed. Then again, I guess Sony's trying its level best to minimize costs so as to sell this at =< $400.

Everything about this hardware spec suggests it is indeed running on 14nm processor fabrication technology, and demand for that is set to rocket in Q4 this year.

Shouldn't the new process technology also mean new cores ? PS4 is based on 20nms...right?

I mean, I know for a fact that when talking about smaller cores, there is inherent performance improvement due to lower inductances and capacitances
also due to getting better thermal signature

Yup, more GPU cores. They've doubled the CU count from 18 to 36.

On the other hand, the CPU core count is still 8, and 1.5 of those are reserved for OS functions. That leaves 6.5 cores available to developers, which is kind of sad given how weak they are in the first place. A minor bump in clock speed from 1.6Ghz to 2.1Ghz isn't going to help much, unfortunately.

CMON Sony, just release the price already. If it is $400, hell, I might consider buying this instead of a normal PS4 as I have plans of buying a PS4 soon-ish. Or if the base PS4 drops in price, that will be sweet too.

Sony was waiting for you to buy current PS4 before releasing the upgraded version . Think of this upgraded PS4 as collector edition and get it before @amaga :wink2:

not unless there is an UB3R l33t AWESOME limited edition which can top my arkham knight edition than PERHAPS but for now NO ! ill wait for ps5 with proper and native 1080p/60fps UNLIKE this which would probably etc upscale games and cause troubles for older ps4 models to run on par with it.

At the very least, yes. I have a feeling if it can do that for every game, people will buy it for that a lot more than for 4K. Very few people own 4K hardware.

The need to support existing PlayStation 4 hardware puts a ceiling on the kind of experiences developers can offer - any kind of multi-platform development is defined by the lowest common denominator, and it's rare to find a developer that will dedicate significant resources to a small minority of users.

Perhaps a March 2017 launch is more likely then, but the existence of the new console may dissuade people from investing in the existing model.

This falls in line with what I was saying earlier:

the upgraded version might not be meaningful/significant enough to make the switch to PS4K as the extra horsepower will not be fully utilized on games running on both platforms. New comers will be getting the better deal if the price is right which won't sit well with the early adopters.

I don't get it. What's the purpose behind this upgrade? It's not like ps4 is struggling technically. Sony has made some nonsensical decisions since release of PS4 but this one has the potential to be their biggest. Not only will they alienate their considerable consumer base but they will be forcing everyone to move to a console that will be barely different. 4k on a console is still a dream as it takes mad expensive PC to even begin running current games at 4k, a console is just not possible unless the said game is from PS2 era.
I hope MS doesn't try this stupidity too. Phil has gone very quite since his initial statement regarding upgraded Xbox one.
